There's some good news about Papi:
The Sox accelerated their schedule with David Ortiz; the slugger for the first time yesterday hit some soft toss and was planning to do so through the weekend in New York. He said he hoped to be hitting in the cage next week, which of course is terrific news for the Sox. Don't pencil him in your post-All-Star Game lineup just yet, there are hurdles to be crossed, but things appear headed in the right direction.

am sure the Sox ( & fans) expected more from Lugo but it is what it is. Lugo’s issues are magnified because the offense is so weak right now.

One thing about Kazmir is that he always seems to have a high pitch count already by the 5th inning or so

That is why my reference to Rose colored glasses. I don’t know if there are unknown injuries (Varitek, Manny) or behind the scenes conflicts, but this group of potentially talented guys IS NOT PLAYING UP TO THEIR POTENTIAL!. Usually when that happens, you blame the manager and maybe rightly so. Francona may be too nice a buddy to these guys instead of a boss! Of course, maybe I am wrong about the talent issues, but I doubt that. This team is just not performing when it counts, and the momentum killers must be found and stopped or the slide similar to two years ago WILL CONTINUE despite any missplaced stats you can cite!!

The Sox are the best offensive team in the AL. Manny is not playing well these days, but maybe next week he’ll bomb 4 HRs in 5 games, we don’t know. We lead the AL in OBP even playing without Papi. The MFY SUCKED earlier on without A-Rod, so I think what the Sox is doing is pretty nice.

MDC was bad but Hansen was truly atrocious.
I really think Francona needs to study some game tape of Earl Weaver and/or Tony LaRussa. Time after time, when I can see a relief pitcher is out there throwing batting practice, Francona just leaves the guy on the mind for an extra batter or two. A good deal of the blame for the 7th inning has to fall on Francona’s head. When a pitcher is throwing crap, the manager has to act quickly. It is absolutely ludicrous to have two relief pitchers who are throwing crap let the first six batters reach base.
Stupid post-game is talking about how Longoria had the ‘big at bat’. From what I saw, the big at bat was when MDC got Iwamura to hit a ground ball, but couldn’t get his lazy ass to first base before the batter! Had he gotten that out, the game would have been 4-2 with one run in, one out, and the bases empty.
But really, Hansen was godawful. In a pressure situation, he comes in and walks the first two batters he faces. Send him to Pawtucket – now!

Francona didn’t leave Hansen or MDC in too long. Each faced 3 batters. The meltdown lasted 30 pitches. This isn’t the post-season and you aren’t going to consistently warm up tow guys or pull guys after one hitter. If you do that, you’ll blow your pen.
As for Hansen, he has great stuff but doesn’t seem mentally tough right now. If you send him down now, you might lose him for the season. Sometimes you have to take your lumps with young pitchers and hope they learn from their mistakes.
Also, who are you going to call up? Bard isn’t ready. Masterson’s lack of control/HR trouble don’t make him an ideal bullpen option right now. You can’t just exile guys. You have to have a better alternative.

Leaving Hansen in to face Longoria was a huge mistake, and it was obviously not going to work.
Rule of thumb: anybody who walks the first two batters they face gets yanked. You don’t need 15 pitches to see how good a pitcher is going to be, when 8 of the first 10(?12 whatever) are balls. And balls that aren’t close to the plate.

Aardsma need 15.2 innings to tie his career high in innings, and has already thrown five more innings than he did all of last year.

I was too lazy to check out what I said, and so I ended up being wrong. J-Lo is having his career year (even with his WHIP this season not being that much lower than the one he posted last year). He’s reliable now. Aar is also a very nice guy.
MDC, Aar, Hansen and Javy are fine as part of our bullpen. Last night sucked, but MDC was dominant in June. Add Paps in the mix, and we have 5 good bullpen arms. I just wish we had a setup man, you know. Like Oki was last season.
It's the same old story. Boy finds girl, boy loses girl, girl finds boy, boy forgets girl, boy remembers girl, girls dies in a tragic blimp accident over the Orange Bowl on New Year's Day.
