Yanks sign Sexson

Capt
Richie Sexson

The recently dumped Richie Sexson reportedly has found a new home with the New York Yankees:

First baseman Richie Sexson and the New York Yankees reached a deal Thursday, a week after the Seattle Mariners cut the slumping slugger.

A person familiar with the contract said Sexson would be paid a prorated share of the $390,000 minimum salary. The person spoke on condition of anonymity because an official announcement had not been made.

Sexson has had better days, but I think he could be a good pickup for the Yankees. He's either going to A) overshadow his strikeouts with a lot of home runs or B) overshadow everything with four strikeouts per game. I'm not quite sure why he's a Yank though, considering the Sexson clone Jason Giambi is also there.

Richie Sexson

This is a desperate move by the Yanks. They are hurting for offensive production and even the Orioles have scored more runs than the Yankees. Sexson had a tough time in Seatle but will not be expected to do as much as he was with the Mariners. The Yanks will use him to replace Matsui but he in no way is the Sexson that played in Milwaukee.

This is great news for Sox fans!!!

Sexson can’t hit, he has no plate discipline, he just swings and hopes for contact. This is such a desperate move on the Yanks part, it is incredible. I guess they are expecting Sydney Ponson reversal. Yes he is strong and his strike zone for 6’8 guy is pretty big, but he strikes out, an incredible amount.

His BA and OPS would had been even worse if the Mariners didn’t bench him because of his awful OBP. I realize when the guy connects it is out of the park, but his seemed to lose his bat speed, and he can’t hit breaking balls.

If he performs well at the Yankees, it may help him not being washed out of MLB next year, but I doubt he can help the Yankees.

Why not?

It’s not like the MFY will have to pay much for Sexson (Seattle will pick up the bult of the tab). His .315 OBP is better than Cabrera’s (,301), Cano’s (.285), or the guy he likely to replace at 1B, Betemit (.268). As a team, the MFY have struggles with left-handed pitching this year: hitting .257 AVG/.338 OBP/.394 SLG. In 61 ABs v. lefties this year, Sexson is hitting .344 AVG/.423 OBP/.623 SLG. He’ll be an inexpensive platoon 1B—and if he doesn’t work out, the MFY will will cut him.

I gotta go 'cause I'm probably definitely gonna nod out again.

Sexson only face lefties with 70 at-bats this year...

So his numbers against Lefties are kind of warped.
Hopefully the Mariners will get the Yankees someone worse than Sexson, José Vidro .

While he does not hurt 'em

He doesn’t help that much as well. I rather see the Yanks playing Sexson out there than playing Teixeira, no doubt in my mind.

It's the same old story. Boy finds girl, boy loses girl, girl finds boy, boy forgets girl, boy remembers girl, girls dies in a tragic blimp accident over the Orange Bowl on New Year's Day.

Sadly, this is a good move for the Yanks

If he can recreate some of the power he used to have then he’ll be valuable. If not, then they can just bench him and not really lose any money.

Indeed.

As DD pointed out, he only has to be better than the crap they’ve thrown out there when Giambi’s had a day off. I think he will be, though how much is certainly up for debate.

I dunno brit,

Getting hit by a Kason Gabbard pitch could hurt pretty bad. I mean, that guy’s arm is like a jackhammer; an 86 mph heater at the head could have killed Sexson.

Well, maybe if thrown in the same spot repeatedly.

An experiment I would gladly sponsor.

Bottom 9th B:1 S:0 O:0 With Bill Mueller batting, Dave Roberts steals (1) 2nd base.

no Giambi clone

Sexson is a strikeout machine. He’s never been anywhere near Giambi’s peak level.

Lets not Forget

This guy slugged over .500 for 9 of his last 11 seasons in the big leagues. While I’d say that even .450 isn’t anymore a possibility due to his anemic BA, this guy can flash some power.
