Boo Birds
Did Red Sox fans in Fenway boo the Yankees so heartily in 1999 as the New York fans have to our players tonight? Just did not seem so cool with all the Hall of Famers there. A classy event with some unclassy fans. And with the respect Francona has shown the Yankees with the lineup, and his likely use of Rivera (wait and see), hard to believe his Bronx cheer was so loud.

I got nothing
Like the game itself, I’ve got nothing interesting, witty or insightful to add.

J D Drew
just hit a home run. That’s sorta cool.

8th inning
Paps pitching. The Yankee fans are tearing into him. He just struck out Dan Uggla, after an end-of-the-bat single to Tejada.

Damn you Navarro.
Throwing error allows Tejada to get to 3rd easy. Sac fly drives him in.

sorry guys but...
papelbon (as good a pitcher as he is) really should have kept his mouth shut.

?
Didn’t he state unequivocally that Mariano should close the game?

after...
he said his initial comment.
the guy is an idiot!
Varitek should have told the team not to make any stupid statements due to the fact that this is an All Star game in Yankees stadium.
It’s just commen sense.

When he was asked if he wanted to close, he said yes. When he was asked if he should close, he said no.
If he didn’t want the ball, he wouldn’t be very good at his job, no? I’m sure Billy Wagner would’ve said the same exact thing.

apparently...
it’s turning into he said / he said.
if he didn’t say that he “thought he should be the closer before mariano” then why did he apologize for making the statement.
as far as WAGNER goes, he knows that he should keep his mouth shut…as evidenced by tonight’s performance.

“We have a great relationship, just from the fact that we understand each other and have that mutual respect for each other. I’ve always referred to him as ‘The Godfather.’ He’s the godfather of closers. He obviously has done a lot of great things for this role. He’s done so much to make this role what it is today. I have a lot of respect for him, from that aspect.“I’m a big believer in paying your dues. If I have to step aside for an elder statesman, I’ll do it.
“At the same time, I’m going after it. There’s no question about it. One day, I might surpass him. If I said I didn’t want to do that, I’d be questioning myself, my own character.”
Then he later said:
“This is Jonathan Papelbon, closer of the Boston Red Sox,” he said, using a reporter’s tape recorder like a microphone. “Mariano Rivera will be closing the 2008 All-Star Game in Yankee Stadium.“I’m making a statement right now, saying I don’t want it, I want him to have it. I said all that earlier, but that’s the way I feel about it.”
Then one of New York’s trashy papers runs a headline saying “Papelbum” and sicking the dumb masses on Papelbon’s wife. That poor New York psyche can’t handle playing second fiddle to a provincial little town like Boston. Reporters were just looking for a reason to get pissed, first being upset about some David Ortiz promotional thing, starting a BS campaign to have Mariano start, then baiting the stud closer of the World Champions if he thought he was worthy of starting the AS game.
If I were Tito, after all that BS, I would’ve had Mariano riding the pine, fifteen innings and all, and had Arod and Jeter bat 8 and 9. Then I would’ve taken a big poop on the mound while Paps, Pedroia, and Youk did the riverdance around me. Blah blah blah, Yankee tradition. If the Yankees had won shit last year, then they’d have the right to dictate who does what where in the game.
Manny ain't the only bad man.

Terry hooks K-Rod with 1-out.
Gives the crowd Mariano for the rest of the 9th. I’m a little torn here. I wouldn’t mind seeing Rivera give up a couple runs, just to anger the Yankee fans who have so clamored for him. But home field advantage could be relevant… nah. Mo goes down, risking home advantage be damned.

papelbon's wife threatened during parade.
what the hell does he expect? i don’t condone the threat but honestly, he’s on the most hated rival team in sports…here’s the article.
Red Sox closer Jonathan Papelbon blamed the New York media for creating a firestorm that resulted in his pregnant wife being threatened on Tuesday.
Papelbon
MLB.com reported that during a red carpet parade for the All-Star Game that went down Sixth Avenue in Manhattan, Papelbon and his wife Ashley were bombarded by insults from fans.
“I feel like I needed to be in a bullet-proof car,” Papelbon said, according to the Web site. “My wife is pregnant and she’s getting her life threatened. It’s stupid.”
Papelbon had said that he would welcome closing out the All-Star Game at Yankee Stadium even though its the home field of Mariano Rivera.
“I’ve said from the very beginning, since two days ago, and talked to Tito [Red Sox manager Terry Francona] about it, I said, ‘I want Mariano to close.’ I understand what it’s about to pay your dues in this game and what it’s about to put in your time,” Papelbon said, according to the Web site. “If you were to ask me, of course I wanted to close. That’s my competitive nature.”
Papelbon said he was shocked when he saw a New York Daily News headline that read “PAPELBUM! Red Sox reliever says he, not Mariano, should close tonight’s All-Star Game.”
“That was an easy headline for that [newspaper] to say, ‘Yeah, Papelbon said he wants to close.’ Yeah, of course I do,” Papelbon said, according to the site. “That’s my competitive nature. But I’m stepping away and saying I don’t need to close.”
Papelbon told MLB.com that he was so disturbed by the parade incident that he didn’t even care if he pitched on Tuesday.
“Your family gets involved like that and you’re trying to enjoy an experience with your family, and you have a wife who’s pregnant who doesn’t feel safe riding in a red-carpet event, you know what I mean? How would you feel?” Papelbon said, according to MLB.com.

This is actually turning into a pretty good game.
Aside from the blown calls (Tejada got a gift out on Kinsler’s CS).

Sherrill bails out Soria.
How long can they go? This is already the longest All Star Game by time.

They've got to be running out of pitchers, right?
Then what?

I don't know.
Kazmir was up, and presumably someone else will step in. Maybe Beckett? Also, isn’t there some procedure for calling a tie in these games?
by 0157H7 on Jul 16, 2008 1:06 AM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
In 2002
with both teams out of substitute pitchers, Bud Selig declared the game a tie in the 11th inning. (See Wikipedia and Baseball-Almanac.com)

But that was a public relations disaster
After which they made the AS game decide home-team advantage, so it’d matter again. I’d be surprised if they called it a tie again.

Sherrill's been awesome.
2.1 scoreless innings. Kazmir should be next if this continues. The only AL bats I like here are Drew and Longoria (HR threats), and maybe Kinsler or Young with RISP. Quentin has sucked, so has Navarro.

And Webb is awesome.
Not looking great for the AL.
Bedtime.

Facetitious
I think he asked John Farrell if he was ready to warm up earlier.

Jeter's chatting up Francona.
Maybe he wants to pitch.
I remember seeing Alex Cora at one point warming in the pen. Can’t remember the game though.

Ballgame.
Morneau after JD walks to load them up and Young sac flies to right. Throw was good but not enough. JD should be player of the game.

I almost wish it had gone longer
Would Tito have pitched Kazmir, which could’ve pissed off TB, or would he have given up the DH and had Longoria pitch? Which, I assume, could’ve pissed off TB.

Hm.
I’m sensing a common thread here. Is it possible that a part of you, maybe even unconsciously, somehow wants the Rays pissed off?
I was thinking more along the lines of “Would Francona ever escape the St Pete (the next time they visit) if Kazmir’s arm fell off?”
by 0157H7 on Jul 16, 2008 2:06 AM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
Have to think we'd have seen something odd once Kazmir got to 20 or so pitches.
Like, for example, Evan Longoria pitching.
And yes, pissed off.
And no, he wouldn’t.

classless yankee fans
I have to say, the Yankees fans really showed their nature, didn’t they?
Red Sox fans would not boo Yankees during an all-star game where home field advantage was on the line. Well, maybe A-Rod, but not every single one, and certainly not somebody like JD Drew who won the MVP. What did Drew ever do to the Yankees? I understand that he gets booed in Philly, and maybe deserves that, but fer chrissakes, the Yankees fans behave like overgrown children.
