LUGO TO DL!!!
The Boston Red Sox place shortstop Julio Lugo on the 15-day disabled list with a left quad strain on Saturday.
Lugo was injured Friday night while running out an infield single in the ninth inning of Boston's 7-3 loss to the Baltimore Orioles. Lugo began to limp as he approached first base, then dropped to ground shortly after hitting the bag.
The age of Lowrie has begun. We shall see how he fares, but it looks like he'll be getting a two week tryout here.
I think an infield of Lowell, Pedroia, Youk and Lowrie could set a record for doubles.
*********UPDATE************
He had an MRI today and said the doctor told him it was torn; the team said it was a "severe strain." He is expected to be out 4-to-6 weeks and was in the team clubhouse with a large brace on his left leg.
So it looks like Lowrie's tryout might be a month. I just picked him up for my fantsy team - you might want to do the same...

Divine intervention!
It took that to get rid of Lugo. Thank God.

What are you guys happy about?
This likely means more Cora, even if Lowrie is playing today. And more Cora CAN’T be good news.

I can just imagine Christopher Walken telling the team that it needs “more Cora.” Generally, more Cora is a bad thing, but he can be really good. In April of 07 he hit two HR, two triples, and overall was .360 / .407 / .800. His May numbers were also strong, minus the slugging: .294 / .339 / .353/

Christopher Walken saying "but, baby, I gotta have more Cora"
Defeated me. After getting that image in my mind, I’d be okay with Cora starting. :)

What song
would you need “more Cora” for if cowbell equates to “Don’t fear the reaper”?

I want more Lowrie, and I think we'll get it.
I think if he plays well, Mr. Lugo might find himself in a different uniform next season

Proof of Lugo's mommentum sucking capabilities.
Sox with Lugo lose to Orioles 7 to3.
Next day Sox without Lugo kill Orioles 12-1. There you have the absolute proof of Lugo’s momentum sucking abilities! I now look forward to a good month of strong Sox momentum winning almost every game of the next 30. Count on it!

Excuse me?
Lugo’s replacement, Lowrie, went 0-4. I fail to see how Lugo would do worse, actually.

and looked pretty awful.
he made solid contact on a couple pitches, but he looked very uncomfortable at the plate.
anyways… i was excited to see him in the starting lineup. last time i went to fenway was jacoby’s infamous “2nd to home on a WP” and tonight I was hoping to see something big from lowrie…. but i just wasn’t impressed. i felt like i was seeing the ball from the stands better than he was from hte batter’s box.

Lowrie batted less than .200 in July at AAA before being called up
So I guess he’s slumping. I’m glad to see him getting some playing time, but I don’t know if he’ll win the starting job over Cora while Lugo is DLed.

Oh
And I was on gameday today, so I wouldn’t be able to tell how he looked. I only know he did swing at 3-1 pitches only to get out.

hit a couple solid line drives to right.
with a little more power they would’ve been solid shots to the wall for an easy 2B, but they lacked the muscle to get past the gap, so they were essentially an easy out.
it was the pitches he wasn’t hitting that his swing just looked very bad, like he had no idea what pitch was being thrown even after he had started his swing.

maybe...
a stint in the majors will help end htat. i love the potential of lowrie, and hope to see him do well. he filled in nicely when lowell was out early in the season.
even just working every day with the sox excellent coaching staff may help him develop.

Yep
Lowrie has a lot of upside, and even if we can’t find somewhere in the team for him, he would still be a good trade chip. However, I hope he stays.

ignoring lowrie's poor performance...
there’s the fact that in that 7-3 loss the 1-3 slots in the sox order were a combined 0 for 13, and tonight they combined to go 5 for 13. (with a HR, and sweet sweet sweet double down the line)

Proof of Lugo's momentum sucking capabilities?
I like your sophisticated analysis, NG. Did you know that Lugo hit .363 AVG/.417 OBP with1 RBI in the 3-game sweep of Minnesota? What do you make of this?
By the way, who is sucking Tampa’s momentum?
I gotta go 'cause I'm probably definitely gonna nod out again.

Momentum sucking capabilities?
I will attempt to be somewhat serious (is that an oxymoron??) with my reply here. “Momentum sucking capabilities” is an accurate and somewhat self-descriptive term. I intuitively sense that Lugo does more harm to the team than good even if he hits occasionally when it seldom counts. His teammates may or may not like him, but they know, as I know, as you know, that in the clutch, he is useless. Indeed hitting into DPs, striking out ,and making errors when it counts the most, is his forte!
That is what “momentum sucking capabilities” means behind the scenes in reality. Without Lugo, there will be a fresh team approach with more potential capable players because Lowrie is unproven unlike Lugo who is proven as a “momentum sucker”. Count on it!

you could quote the fact...
that he’s got a killer 429 OPS with runners in scoring position.
but that doesn’t consider the fact that he has a career .700 OPS with risp, and that he’ll probably begin to regress to the mean (oh snap, fancy words). even if he is declining in productivity, a 300 point drop in OPS is ridiculous, and luck or injury is pretty much the only explanation. he hasn’t been hurt, so look for his luck to change in the long run.
also, baseball-reference.com - their splits page will probably give you better information than your gut.

I don't have any faith on OPS
if what you are implying is true. Also from http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Baseball_statisticsWickapeida:
Some sabermetric statistics have entered the mainstream baseball world that measure a batter’s overall performance including On-base plus slugging, commonly referred to as OPS. OPS adds the hitter’s on base percentage (number of times reached base by any means divided by total plate appearances) to his slugging percentage (total bases divided by at bats). Some argue that the OPS formula is flawed and that more weight should be shifted towards OBP (on base percentage).[2]
If you look at his OBP with men in scoring position, I think my point better be shown because I know my point is real!
by NG on Jul 13, 2008 1:49 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
it's true, OPS isn't perfect.
but i’m guessing if i started talking about standard deviation and the wonders of math-a-magics (i have a degree in math, just so you know), then your gut would probably tell you that i don’t know what i’m talking about.

Sure, OPS isn’t the BEST stat, but it’s heads above BA and not that much worse than EqA.
Go ahead and look at his OBP with RISP. For his career, he is at .325… which is respectably average. This season he is at .277. That’s 50 points lower than his career totals, which is a significant jump.
Why do i say it’s luck? His BABIP is a tiny .164. Part of that is that he’s hit his share of weak ground balls. A lot of that is luck.
If this injury isn’t bad enough to effect his long-term performance, he will regress back to being complete average, just like he always has been.
by jjbooth74 on Jul 13, 2008 4:56 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
A .164 BABIP?
Holy cow, that’s bad. Is that for all ABs or just with RISP? If his OBP is around .350 and his BABIP is a paltry .164, good things should be in store.

just with RISP
part weak ground balls, part bad luck. either way, luck should improve because that’s WAY lower than his career #’s.

Furthermore, if you look at:
http://www.baseball-reference.com/teams/BOS/2008.shtml
I believe only Varitek has a worse OPS on the entire team among usual starters. Heck, even Crisp’s OPS is better. Also this stat does not tell about clutch hitting because you just do not know what is at stake during his at bats. You got to watch the games for that feeling, and I DO!
by NG on Jul 13, 2008 2:20 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
yes.
lugo has a very low slugging percentage, meaning he hits a lot of singles.
But he’s also almost exactly at the league (that means AL only) average for shortstops, and his OPS+ for the season so far is 82, which isn’t THAT far below the league average for any position…. it’s low, but not omar vizquel low.
Also, no stat tells you about clutch hitting (except the “clutch” number, which the jury is still out on) until you look at his splits, which (if you check the post above), reveal that he’s been pretty unlucky.
He’s had a few at bats recently where he’s whiffed or made weak contact, but do you remember the streak he had about a month ago where for about a weak straight he hit HARD line drives at the infielders? That’s the kind of streak that will lower your BABIP and cause you to appear terrible, when in fact you’re just unlucky.

Their manager
On the local news in the Bay Area, he was was interviewed and he said their problem was falling behind in the count early and not getting good contact. He then went on to say that they would be able to talk their way out of this slump. ??? Wouldn’t taking more pitches in early counts help better?

Jed Lowrie
i hope Lowrie replaces Lugo, he’s just horrible, he has his flashes on defense from time to time but his batting is horrible.
