Hitting when it counts
There are certain hitting stats that are more important than others for a truly good team. Hitting with men in scoring position and hitting in clutch situations are what counts. The Sox have too many weak clutch hitter, IMO.
I rank our usual starting hitters as follows:
Best-Lowell, hands down the best then

How are you ranking them?
Are you just going by observation, or did you look at some of the RISP / clutch stats?
Using the wonderful site Baseball-reference.com, I checked some of these stats. Your bottom three are all struggling with RISP and clutch stats, hitting well below .300 in such situations. Tek at least has a .323 OBP with RISP.
Lugo has so far shined only in low leverage situations, batting .347 / .420 / .418 in them. He’s batting .179 and slugging .193 with RISP, with a .329 OBP. The only good thing we can say about Lugo is that his OBP stays above .300 in most important situations, allowing other hitters to try to drive in the runners.

Really, there’s no stat that tells Lowell is our best hitter. Our best hitter is Manny. Papi is right behind him, and the third best is… JD Drew (career EqA of .304, in fact higher than Papi’s).
Tek is our CATCHER. And he’s old. He’s not supposed to be a great hitter. If we’re going to replace him, it’s not because he’s a bad hitter or shit like that, but because he’s old.

I agree...
...that ‘Tek shouldn’t be replaced, but he’s definitely in that inning-ending trio with Lugo and Crisp. Ironically, Lugo has the best OBP (60ish points), but does the least for the team on the field. Varitek is irreplaceable for his effect on the staff, and Crisp is a + defender (his misplaying yesterday’s RBI nonwithstanding). Lugo’s bat is acceptable, but he’s a 16 error short-stop thusfar – which is not acceptable for any club who wants to preserve its pitching. Oh, and win games...
The upside is that in the ordinary course, they wouldn’t all be everyday guys. Here’s hoping for a reasonable-value trade of Crisp at the deadline, then…

About Lugo
He’s a really, really bad fielder. Even the unbelievable number of errors he has don’t tell the full story on how bad he really is at defense.
However, his bat is good, and I don’t see any other options that would be better than him and available right now. Maybe he’ll get his shit together, and be a better fielder.
