Bad News: Ortiz Out At Least A Month
EDITOR'S NOTE: Drugs broke the news first at OTM. I'm not sure what the Sox are going to do. Obviously, this is a huge loss. If they try to make a trade, every team is going to try to squeeze them for everything the Sox have because they know they are in a bad position. However ... what the Sox could do is move Manny to DH, Ellsbury to left and start Coco in center. We'd be able to keep Coco, see his defense and hopefully get him into a groove so he starts to hit again. We would, without a doubt, have the nastiest outfield in the game - Randy.
According to Tony Massarotti of the Herald , Ortiz will miss at least a month. But he may need season-ending surgery.
According to a source, Ortiz’ wrist will be immobilized for roughly the next month to determine whether the injury can heal on its own.
Massarotti speculates:
Given the current reality concerning Ortiz, the Sox very well might have to explore the trade market for a replacement before the July 31 deadline. Of course, finding a replacement for Ortiz is a virtual impossibility given his place as perhaps the game’s premier run producer and one of its most accomplished clutch hitters.
Let's hope Ortiz is able to return to the Sox line-up this year--and doesn't suffer the fate of Nomar, who was never the same hitter after a serious wrist injury.

Crap, oh crap
Shit man…
Walk on, walk on With hope in your heart And you'll never walk alone You'll never walk alone
Hmmmmmm
That sucks.
Though the thought has risen here in another thread…..
Bonds?
For baseball reasons?
or for ethical reasons?
Bottom 9th B:1 S:0 O:0 With Bill Mueller batting, Dave Roberts steals (1) 2nd base.
Bonds for baseball reasons
makes complete sense. However, I’m not keen on adding him to the roster on moral principle. Plus, he keeps complaining about how racist Boston.
"You know you're having a bad day when the fifth inning rolls around and they drag the warning track." - Mike Flanagan, Baltimore Orioles pitcher, 1992.
exactly
I’m not looking for another co-hort to tie the group in Boston together, I’m looking at a BAt that demands the same respect as Papi’s did in the line-up. Manny can only do so much, but he becomes sooooo much better with the Big Man there with him.
no trade
Well, it depends on how bad the injury is. But let’s face it – nobody is going to trade away a bat as big as Papi’s.
And what the Sox need is bullpen help, not another bat.
I don’t think the Sox expect to get a bat as good as Papi’s in return, they just need something to fill the gap. The Sox may need some bullpen help, but now with Papi down, they definitely do need another bat. Papi’s bat is the biggest of the bunch, and now it’s gone. We definitely need another bat.
We could try a trade with teams that are struggling
Like the Rockies, or so. I wouldn’t mind seeing Atkins (even with his home/away split) if we could somehow get him cheap.
But I’m not big on trying a trade. I agree that letting Coco start at CF, and Taco at LF is the best option we have. Still, we would have just Manny hitting for power.

I would rather see
Moss in LF and Coco on the bench. Moss’ bat is much better. To me, Coco is better suited to pinch-running and late-inning defense.
However, it seems the FO will go with Coco. Chris Carter was called up.
I gotta go 'cause I'm probably definitely gonna nod out again.

Coco has to go
So if he sees some playing time, maybe that will bring his trade value up. But I’d also let Moss in LF, or bring Casey to DH (Manny likes playing LF, I’m told).

Oh
And this may sound stupid, but when Lowrie is ready, what about let him start at SS and put Lugo as the DH? He’s a far worse fielder than Manny, and it would be fun to see if he could somehow still make an error. :)

Not having Papi is going to put a big dent in the offensive line up. But we have Manny, plus we still have Youk, Lowell, and Drew who combine for around 50 HRs last year and like 270 RBIs. I think if we can get more strength in the bullpin and solidify the starters, and Drew will stay healthy, the sox are still a contender.
Well Chris Carter has been called up
He can mash. I’m pretty excited to see what he can offer.

Can I assume...
...that Brandon Moss is recuperating, and that’s why they didn’t bring him up?
Or am I just a huge freakin’ homer/fanboy?

Chris Carter has good numbers
Not as good as the ones Bailey had, but really good as well.

I'm just always leery of guys...
With the nickname “Not the good.”
Like if there was a prospect in the Royals or Blue Jays’ farm system with stone hands, no speed, and an OPS of .125 named Julio Lugo, then our SS would be named “Not the good” Julio Lugo.
I think there’s another Chris Carter with the White Sox, and I believe our Carter is the not good one. That minor league line looks good though [per the OTM Season Preview], so if we can mask reportedly awful defense with a DH stint, why not?
I still like Moss better, for absolutely no reason…
Rock me, sexy Jesus...

No trades
Anyone the Sox could get wouldn’t be as good as what they already have anyway, and any trading partner would make them pay through the nose.
I think this means Coco isn’t going anywhere, though.
Papi's comments:
“I think the doctors say 70 to 80 percent of the people that had this, normally when they get the cast, it normally goes back [to where it was],” Ortiz said. “If the pain goes away and I still have the clicking, I probably can play through it and maybe fix it after the season. Otherwise, if I have the pain, I [might need surgery].”
I gotta go 'cause I'm probably definitely gonna nod out again.
Ortiz
Definitely a blow to the lineup, but considering the time of the injury with interleague play coming up (3 visits to national league parks), Ortiz was due to sit a few games anyway without the DH in play. All in all, this lessens the impact to the lineup. The other added benefit is increased playing time for Crisp helping to raise his market share for a possible trade in the coming weeks (bullpen help definitely towards the top of the want list). Also, having Drew in the 3 hole and his recent production takes some of the sting away from the injury.
