Game Thread 6-10-08

Ellsbury did seem aware the team needed him to play, even with the soreness in the right wrist. And he appeared prepared to do that, though manager Terry Francona said he wanted to see how Ellsbury got through batting practice today. He said he always could insert Brandon Moss into the lineup in Ellsbury's place.

"I'm definitely happy with the turnaround from when I did it to now," Ellsbury said. "It's still sore, but you can play through soreness.

"I was pretty worried, how it felt right as it happened. It was nice to get the X-ray right away, the MRI right away, to see that everything was all right. Once you know there's no structural damage, you can play through the soreness. There's a big difference between hurting and soreness. It's going to be sore for a little while. You're never feeling 100 percent throughout the whole season on any body part, so it'll be fine."

I'm on gameday

Is Beckett looking as bad as it seems like he’s looking? He’s slow, and getting hit a lot.

He’s being looking worse than his numbers would tell. He’s not looking anywhere near to being our ace.

It's the same old story. Boy finds girl, boy loses girl, girl finds boy, boy forgets girl, boy remembers girl, girls dies in a tragic blimp accident over the Orange Bowl on New Year's Day.

The Sox are without an ace at the moment

He can’t control his fastball, can’t get the curveball over which has been going on all year, is getting hit hard, and the wind out to left has hurt him bad.

I think Beckett

...ends up with a short outing here. He’s up to like 700 pitches at the moment.

Has anyone read anything about what ’s happened to him since ‘07? It’s not like he’s chronically sucking as bad as he did last inning (4 ER on 37 pitches, btw), but he’s not his dominating self. I find myself – in the dark nights of my Fenway-loving soul – whispering “regression to the mean.

A litttle timidness from Jacoby due to the wrist?

What would take us to get Ben Sheets?

I mean, not because Beckett’s poor start. I remember the time there was a talk about we trading for him. He’s a great pitcher when not injured.

It's the same old story. Boy finds girl, boy loses girl, girl finds boy, boy forgets girl, boy remembers girl, girls dies in a tragic blimp accident over the Orange Bowl on New Year's Day.

Too much

The Sox have a lot of pitching. And, as long as Papi comes back (and can hit), they don’t need much.

I gotta go 'cause I'm probably definitely gonna nod out again.

by Drugs Delaney on Jun 10, 2008 7:09 PM EDT to parent up   0 recs

A lot of pitching?

Well, I disagree. Sort of… If Colon and Masterson keep giving us good starts until the end of the season, if Wake don’t go down to some kind of injury (which is not very likely, but, then again, he’s old) and if we call Bowden up (I don’t care if it’s a little early, he deserves it), then we’ll have a lot of pitching. Beckett is not looking very good lately, Lester is great and has been great for quite a while, and Dice-K is good-to-great. But we don’t know if Curt can give us anything yet, and Buch has not been good at AAA.

It’s not like we need another starter or reliever, but, come on, it would make us stronger if we somehow got any pitcher cheaply.

It's the same old story. Boy finds girl, boy loses girl, girl finds boy, boy forgets girl, boy remembers girl, girls dies in a tragic blimp accident over the Orange Bowl on New Year's Day.

by Drugs Delaney on Jun 10, 2008 7:19 PM EDT to parent up   0 recs

We're 10th so far in ERA

Which is okay, so as I said before, we do not need to trade for a new starter, but it would make us stronger if he can be good.

It's the same old story. Boy finds girl, boy loses girl, girl finds boy, boy forgets girl, boy remembers girl, girls dies in a tragic blimp accident over the Orange Bowl on New Year's Day.

In May, the Sox were 6th

The Sox aren’t going to add an injury-prone 29-year old starter, who makes over $12 million. The FO has stockpiled young arms to keep costs down.

I gotta go 'cause I'm probably definitely gonna nod out again.

by Drugs Delaney on Jun 10, 2008 7:35 PM EDT to parent up   0 recs

Well

Ben Sheets wasn’t the best idea ever. What about Bedard? Bill Bavasi is an idiot, so we could get him cheaply I guess. Or Sabathia at the end of the season. I don’t know, really. The Sox don’t need an average pitcher, but like any other team in the league a very good one would not be bad, and that’s my point.

It's the same old story. Boy finds girl, boy loses girl, girl finds boy, boy forgets girl, boy remembers girl, girls dies in a tragic blimp accident over the Orange Bowl on New Year's Day.

by MerryGoByeBye on Jun 10, 2008 7:41 PM EDT to parent up   0 recs

I can't see the Sox throwing money at Sabathia

They’ll save that for Beckett. I also don’t see them making a pitching move this year, unless they have to. Right now, they don’t.

I gotta go 'cause I'm probably definitely gonna nod out again.

by Drugs Delaney on Jun 10, 2008 7:48 PM EDT to parent up   0 recs

I don't think we'll sign Sabathia either

But I’m just saying names we could somehow get. We really don’t have to make a move for a pitcher, but we’re in the same spot as every other team in the league: getting an ace wouldn’t hurt us. :)

It's the same old story. Boy finds girl, boy loses girl, girl finds boy, boy forgets girl, boy remembers girl, girls dies in a tragic blimp accident over the Orange Bowl on New Year's Day.

by MerryGoByeBye on Jun 10, 2008 7:56 PM EDT to parent up   0 recs

The Sox have an ace: Beckett

Beckett is better than all the pitchers you’ve mentioned: Sheets, Sabathia, and Bedard.

I gotta go 'cause I'm probably definitely gonna nod out again.

by Drugs Delaney on Jun 10, 2008 8:01 PM EDT to parent up   0 recs

I'm not saying a new ace

But getting a pitcher with ace stuff. Halladay, Lackey, Zambrano, Harang, and so on (I’m not even saying Webb or Peavy). We won’t be able to get any of those, but if we somehow had the chance, I think we should make a move.

Pitcher with ace material. Not to replace Beckett. And we also don’t need to trade for, but would make our team stronger if we manage to get , like it would make any other team in the league stronger. That’s my point.

It's the same old story. Boy finds girl, boy loses girl, girl finds boy, boy forgets girl, boy remembers girl, girls dies in a tragic blimp accident over the Orange Bowl on New Year's Day.

The thing is

None of those guys are available, and the Sox aren’t going to empty their system for one player.

I gotta go 'cause I'm probably definitely gonna nod out again.

by Drugs Delaney on Jun 10, 2008 8:08 PM EDT to parent up   0 recs

I know and I said that

But we never know when one might become available. It’s a pipe dream, it would only happen with the combination of 2 things: a team start sucking, and a stupid GM. We don’t need to trade, but if Bavasi start telling everybody he’s shopping King Felix, why not offer him Timlin + Lugo? :)

It’s not doable, but if something like that (not Timlin + Lugo, but other prospects that are not on our top 10 list) happened, hey, why not?

It's the same old story. Boy finds girl, boy loses girl, girl finds boy, boy forgets girl, boy remembers girl, girls dies in a tragic blimp accident over the Orange Bowl on New Year's Day.
