The Twins line-up
God, it’s just bad.
Lugo with a RBI so far. Baseball is weird…

It was a groundout RBI though.
Had anyone been on 1B, it would’ve been a DP. Or at least that’s my analysis of the Gamecast.
Manny ain't the only bad man.

Yeah
But when there are 2 men at scoring position, and nobody at first, I expect my Lugo to strikeout. :)

Lugo's rbi was his TYPICAL ground ball
which would be an easy out and maybe a dp if someone was on first! He just got situationally lucky. He does not belong on this team!

Can you believe Lugo just made *another* error?
Yes, actually.

trade for Eric Gagne
he can’t be any worse as a shortstop than Lugo.

lol
You’re right. And that’s kind of sad. Lugo can’t hit for shit, and he is a crappy infielder. What the hell is he doing on the line-up?

I just can't think of any team in the NL that are this desperate for a SS
I guess that to trade Lugo, we’d have to put other players in the deal.

I just can’t remember now. Can Lugo play 2B? But if they are stupid enough to want Tavarez, maybe they’d send Tulo for us. :)

LUGO DOES NOT BELONG ON THIS TEAM!
He is such a glaring weak link that the entire championship plan in place for the Sox may well be jeopardized by this one poor player out of his league on this team!

Aren't you glad...
...you don’t cheer for the Mariners?
SEATTLE (AP)—Seattle slugger Richie Sexson was suspended for six games and fined Friday by Major League Baseball after charging the mound and throwing his helmet at a Texas pitcher [Kason “I was once traded for Gagne” Gabbard] the previous night.
I don’t see what the big deal is. It’s not like Sexson has hit anything recently.

by MerryGoByeBye on May 9, 2008 11:35 PM EDT reply actions 0 recs
No it definitely should have been Paps
Oki had already pitched 2 innings for one thing. More importantly though, Paps is the closer and he gets the majority of saves. I don’t know what’s going on with him but he didn’t look as fired up as he usually does.

Letting Oki close the game
I know it would never happen, but, man… Paps is one of my favorite pitchers ever, and seeing him lose 2 games in a row hurts me more than losing these 2 games.
And if we had won this, we would be the best team in the MLB (I guess).

We lost this game because of
very weak hitting by the bottom 3 in the lineup, and we allowed the Twins to steal too easily. Lugo is striking out and gounding out too much and Veritek is popping up too much. Then we allowed the Twins to steal third base (and second too) unchallenged. That put too much Pressure on Paps to have to strike out the side. Why didn’t we challenge that third base steal attempt??
by NG on May 9, 2008 11:50 PM EDT reply actions 0 recs
Papelbon has been off in both of the last two save opportunities. He deserves a share of the responsibility.
by 0157H7 on May 10, 2008 12:00 AM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
What are you talking about?
” ... too much pressure on Paps ..” Are you crazy? He is an elite closer with a 1-run lead, a situation an elite closer should be able to handle. He didn’t. That’s the entire problem tonight. We can argue about Lugo’s error that led to two runs. Manny’s gaffe that put a runner on second who later scored, or Ellsbury’s ill-advised throw to third that put Mauer in scoring position in the first. Without those four runs the Sox would have won—right? However, when Paps fails to protect a 1-run lead against the 7th, 8th, and 9th hitter of an average to below-average offensive team, the blame is his. End of story.
As for the “weak” bottom third of the line-up, they drove in 2 runs and were on-base 5 times. The top of the order drove in none and was on base 7 times. Offensively, the biggest problem is Manny right now. He is hitting .219 AVG in 8 games in May. He was 1 for 5 and struck out 3 times.
I gotta go 'cause I'm probably definitely gonna nod out again.
by Drugs Delaney on May 10, 2008 2:14 AM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
Ground balls for outs
that could be double play balls in other circumstances are hardly strong endorsements for RBI skills, and that is what Veritek and Lugo had! In Lugo’s case, it is all he ever has! Also, what about that third base steal that Veritek did not challenge. I do not believe Veritek had a very good night, IMO!
I guess there was plenty of blame to go around on this one. I agree that Manny looks worn out all of a sudden and Papelbon as well. I wonder why? Maybe a transfusion from the superhuman Youkilis would help??
