I have an unhealthy dislike for Jay Payton.

Not sure why. Yes, he was a dickhead when he left Boston, but I REALLY don’t like him. Very out of character for me.

Manny ain't the only bad man.

Thanks for starting the thread. I wasn’t around to do so (stuck in downtown Boston) and I guess no one else was either.

Ells has 2 SB tonight

Giving him 5 in the first two games of the series. I love our new running game. If Crisp and Lugo could get on a bit more often… wow.

by soxaholic on May 31, 2008 8:34 PM EDT   0 recs

Scratch that

THREE tonight for Jacoby.

Lester at over 100 pitches through 5

Really, how can you expect to perform with 20+ pitches per inning?

by soxaholic on May 31, 2008 8:54 PM EDT   0 recs

just what we need

our starter reaching his pitch count in 6 innings the night after we burned through, what, 6 relievers?

Congradulations to Manny!

Now he should be able to relax and start to be Manny again!

The Red Sox are really playing as if two pitchers were hitting with Crisp and Lugo in the game.

That is about what is happening with those two incompetent hitters in the line-up. I really believe the Sox will have a hard time repeating as champions with these two poor, poor hitters in the line-up! Can’t something be done by management and soon??

by NG on May 31, 2008 9:37 PM EDT   0 recs

scuttlebutt around here is that...

Crisp will be easier to unload than Lugo, but not by much.

Man...

I missed Manny HR, I can’t believe that. I’ll watch it now on gameday. Must have been something else.

Manny is a great guy, and one of my 5 favorite players ever.

Crisp/Lugo double play momentum killer again, again, and again!

This has got to end or the Sox management is incompetent!

Crisp

With the GIDP RBI run.

If Cora has a better AVG than Lugo,

and if they put him in late in the game for Lugo because his defense is better, then why the F__k is Lugo in there ever at all??????????

by NG on May 31, 2008 10:34 PM EDT   0 recs

Lugo is way better a hitter than Cora

And while Cora is better fielding, he’s isn’t that much better (or was, at least before this season, because I think Lugo took the year to set some kind of record).

by MerryGoByeBye on May 31, 2008 10:45 PM EDT to parent up   0 recs

I wonder if Lugo is gonna start showing some pop again.

His slugging is still below his OBP. He usually had decent power in the past. Even last year his isolated power was 70 points higher.

Manny ain't the only bad man.

by tommy.otm on May 31, 2008 11:08 PM EDT to parent up   0 recs

How can you say that Lugo is a much better hitter than Cora?

What “down to earth” stat shows this??

by NG on Jun 1, 2008 8:10 AM EDT to parent up   0 recs

Perhaps the one that says: career stats ...

Alex Cora – .245 AVG/.310 OBP/.348 SLG
Julio Lugo.276 AVG/.334 OBP/. 392 SLG

I know Cora is hitting .333 AVG/.412 OBP/.367 SLG right now. But don’t be fooled. He was hitting .294 AVG/.339 OBP/.353 SLG at the end of May last year and ended up hitting .246 AVG/.298 OBP/.346 SLG (right in-line with his career numbers).

I gotta go 'cause I'm probably definitely gonna nod out again.

by Drugs Delaney on Jun 1, 2008 10:13 AM EDT to parent up   0 recs

Very much right

And even if Cora ended up last season with better numbers than Lugo, he had less than the half of PA Lugo had. And Cora starts hot, then become crap again. He just didn’t have the ‘time’ to put up worse stats than Lugo. The last time Cora had nearly the same amount was in 2003:

Cora: .249/.287/.338
Lugo: .271/.333/.410

Lugo is not a bad hitter (although his OBP being actually higher than his SLG this season is… I want to say it’s bad, but it’s so unusual I just don’t know what to call). I wouldn’t be too concerned with him as our SS if he was a decent defender. His career numbers on fielding are in line with the average on the league (really), but this season he’s not being good at all defensively. And that’s worse than his bat (as opposed to Crisp, who is a great fielder, but an awful hitter).

Two points

1.The current counts more than the past. Babe Ruth may have great lifetime stats, but he is now dead so not likely to do well on the field.

2. You Lugo semi-denfenders have very short memories, or so it would seem. Do you remember Lugo’s hitless streak of last year?? From:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Julio_Lugo

Lugo was brought on to bat leadoff, but was moved by manager Terry Francona to the bottom part of the order primarily due to his inability to consistently get on base. From June 15 to July 3 Lugo went 0-33 from the plate. Since 1996, only one other Major League player with more than 250 at bats 80 games into the season has had a lower batting average; Greg Vaughn, .163 for the Tampa Bay Devil Rays in 2002. His performance was at such a low point, columnist Tom K. Elitch coined the phrase “Lugo for 4”, and Red Sox fans started referring to him this way as well as “Lug-Out” and the Hot Dog Don.[3]

After the first week of July 2007, Lugo turned his hitting performance around, completing a 14-game hitting streak on July 25, 2007. He was 24-for-54 (.444) during the career-best streak, raising his average from an abysmal .189 back on July 7 to .226.

You do not consistently do well with crap like that on a team! Everyone else has to make up for his lack of talent, and that takes its emotional and physical toll over time! All this on the offensive side no less, so when you add in his lead leading error total, well what the heck are we talking about? Back to my original Cora question but with greater emphasis for some honesty!

"Hot Dog Don"

Wha? I think I missed the boat on that one.

Manny ain't the only bad man.

You're so right
The current counts more than the past. Babe Ruth may have great lifetime stats, but he is now dead so not likely to do well on the field.

Other players that Alex Cora is better than:

Orlando Cabrera: .242 AVG/.302 OBP/.323 SLG
Derek Jeter: .269 AVG/.321 OBP/.365 SLG
Edgar Renteria: .277 AVG/.314 OBP/.377 SLG
Khalil Greene: .210 AVG/.255 OBP/.322 SLG

I gotta go 'cause I'm probably definitely gonna nod out again.

by Drugs Delaney on Jun 1, 2008 12:42 PM EDT to parent up   0 recs

He's way better than Guerrero too

.246/.308/.424. I wonder if the Angels would trade him straight up for Cora.

Oooo

This is fun.

Cora is OPS’ing .778, better than Ichiro, Carl Crawford, Dustin Pedroia, Nick Swisher, and Robinson Cano.

Manny ain't the only bad man.

And Kevin Cash

Better than VMart, Johjima, and Pudge.

Not sure how I missed this...

maybe cause I can’t actually watch the games, but Ellsbury has stolen 6 bases over the last two games.

Manny ain't the only bad man.

by tommy.otm on Jun 1, 2008 1:07 PM EDT   0 recs

Ells is having quietly a very good season

He’s is OBPing .384, with 26 SB, and he has being VERY good at fielding too. He’s also hitting more homers than I expected.

ROY stuff if he can keep it up.
