Open Thread: Royals @ Red Sox
Kansas City Royals at Boston Red Sox, May 22, 2008 1:35 PM EDT
I'm smelling a sweep. Sox are looking for their seventh straight victory today. Daisuke Matszuaka is on the mound looking to go 8-0 on the season.

2-out walk.
Daisuke, at least on gamecast, not looking particularly sharp and definitely not efficient.
"Are you a real doctor, or a doctor like Dr. Pepper is a doctor?"
2-out single.
Daisuke goes 0-2 to Guillen, then lets the count even up and also throws a WP.

2-out BB
Going to be one of THOSE days for Daisuke.
"Are you a real doctor, or a doctor like Dr. Pepper is a doctor?"
2 Ks, 2 BB, 1 H, 1 ER. 34 pitches.
Hope Aardsma is going to be ready for two innings today.
"Are you a real doctor, or a doctor like Dr. Pepper is a doctor?"
Not looking good so far.
DMZ with 34 pitches in the first inning. Hopefully he’ll turn things around, get some quick outs, maybe pitch to contact more.
That last part if the real issue with him.
He has no interest in pitching to contact.
"Are you a real doctor, or a doctor like Dr. Pepper is a doctor?"
Heh.
I had no thoughts of him doing that.
I did have faith that he’d put up a quality PA in that situation. But that? Eh. Didn’t think so.
But so awesome.

Lugo with the single.
His OBP is over .350. Less yippish errors, and we’ll actually have to call him one of the better SS in the AL. (Not actually kidding. Look it up.)

Leadoff walk to Grudzielanek.
Not going to be his day. Well, I mean, it could be in terms of the W…

Dice-BB's line so far...
3 IP, 1H, 1ER, 5 walks. FIVE.
Going to be one of those days, my friends.
"and THAT happened" -John Mayer announcing Pedrioa at-bat in Tokyo
I'm not even kidding.
If someday, Daisuke throws a complete game with no walks (I don’t care how many hits), it will need to be celebrated like a no-hitter.
"Are you a real doctor, or a doctor like Dr. Pepper is a doctor?"
the doctor is in.
Can Youks capitalize?
"Are you a real doctor, or a doctor like Dr. Pepper is a doctor?"
HE DOES!
5-0 Sox. Lowell and Youks both now 2-2.

YES HE CAN

Just to see how ERA and Wins aren't exactly the best ways to measure a pitcher's quality
Sure Dice-K has 7 wins. Sure his ERA is low. But I wouldn’t mind seeing him going beyond the 5th inning, or at least throwing fewer than 2392834890234 walks…
Walk on, walk on With hope in your heart And you'll never walk alone You'll never walk alone
Still out after 106?
This is punishment for all those walks.
Bottom 9th B:1 S:0 O:0 With Bill Mueller batting, Dave Roberts steals (1) 2nd base.
We're the only ones being punished, really.
"Are you a real doctor, or a doctor like Dr. Pepper is a doctor?"
116 pitches.
6 strikeouts. So…6…times 3.
98 balls? It sure feels like it.
"Are you a real doctor, or a doctor like Dr. Pepper is a doctor?"
Wow.
I’m still not entirely comfortable, but J-Lo’s been pretty good lately.
"Are you a real doctor, or a doctor like Dr. Pepper is a doctor?"
Yes, yes he has.
He’s been better than Okajima and MDC.
Bottom 9th B:1 S:0 O:0 With Bill Mueller batting, Dave Roberts steals (1) 2nd base.
That's the real problem with Lopez.
It’s not him exactly. It’s the fact that he shouldn’t be the reliever we’re most comfortable with after Paps.
"Are you a real doctor, or a doctor like Dr. Pepper is a doctor?"
David Jonathan Drew is in the zone
and Kevin Cash is unbelievable this year. It’s Kevin Cash! The man who used to make Corky Miller look like Joe Mauer.

I really wouldn't mind seeing Drew bat leadoff on Ellsbury's days off.

Bottom 9th B:1 S:0 O:0 With Bill Mueller batting, Dave Roberts steals (1) 2nd base.
Or Craig Hansen, apparently.
Still, this is finally the type of game that my “wrote Timlin off awhile ago”-mind can handle Timlin pitching in.
"Are you a real doctor, or a doctor like Dr. Pepper is a doctor?"
And Hansen gives up the dong.
11-4.
"Are you a real doctor, or a doctor like Dr. Pepper is a doctor?"
Shit
Man, why the hell do I keep having to go out everytime when the Sox is scoring, but always come back in time to see the Royals scoring? What are the odds of that?

HANSON!
Walk on, walk on With hope in your heart And you'll never walk alone You'll never walk alone
Hansen is more interested in being a tease than an actual ML-pitcher.
There, I said it.
"Are you a real doctor, or a doctor like Dr. Pepper is a doctor?"
Indeed
But I can’t remember the last time he actually looked good.

Make Hansen pitch
the rest of the game.
Bottom 9th B:1 S:0 O:0 With Bill Mueller batting, Dave Roberts steals (1) 2nd base.
Again. I think that'd be mostly punishment for us.
Though I’m less against that idea than the whole thing Tito was trying to do with Daisuke.
"Are you a real doctor, or a doctor like Dr. Pepper is a doctor?"
Esteban German in for..."defensive" purposes.
Or, obviously, so old man Grudzielanek can rest a bit.

Random stat of the day
Does anybody miss Joe Thurston? His OPS+ is an unbelivable -67. He reached the base just once. A HR, you say? Fuck no. A HBP. All this through the worse 8 AB of the whole year. :)
Walk on, walk on With hope in your heart And you'll never walk alone You'll never walk alone
He made a few good plays in LF while he was up
But you’re frickin right. If we need someone else for that kind of role this season, it needs to be…someone else.
"Are you a real doctor, or a doctor like Dr. Pepper is a doctor?"
Agreed
The only thing I’ll miss from him is that picture you used to post everytime he was up to ‘bat’. Van Every looked better, but I don’t know if he can be just as good as a defender.

Van Every should be.
And I think it was Drugs who would post the picture. Pretty hilarious indeed.

But it was a very funny picture. :)

I would love to see Cash break a bat across his knee

AAAAardsma
Or, the second best ERA at our bullpen (yep, lower than Paps).
Walk on, walk on With hope in your heart And you'll never walk alone You'll never walk alone
It's a big if
But he’d be a solid setup man IF he could keep the walks down and pitch ahead in the count more often. The stuff is there, he’s hard to hit, and he has a good K-rate.
"Are you a real doctor, or a doctor like Dr. Pepper is a doctor?"
I put it to you that he sucks
and he’ll be cut once Buchholz is back.
Bottom 9th B:1 S:0 O:0 With Bill Mueller batting, Dave Roberts steals (1) 2nd base.
Really?
I dunno. I think Timlin or Hansen should be first out. And I still think we’d be best served with Buch continuing to be stretched as a SP, rather than in the pen, unless we’re after the ASB and J-Lo is still our second most reliable RP.
"Are you a real doctor, or a doctor like Dr. Pepper is a doctor?"
As I typed that, he gave up the 3-R HR.
"Are you a real doctor, or a doctor like Dr. Pepper is a doctor?"
I put it to you that he sucks
and that his stats are a mirage.
Bottom 9th B:1 S:0 O:0 With Bill Mueller batting, Dave Roberts steals (1) 2nd base.
The ERA is. The K-rate is not.
And he probably won’t ever get that great control I was talking about.
However, two IF singles in the inning? Feels like DP or Cora should’ve gotten one of em. Too much luck.
"Are you a real doctor, or a doctor like Dr. Pepper is a doctor?"
I think he's a three true outcomes pitcher
Bottom 9th B:1 S:0 O:0 With Bill Mueller batting, Dave Roberts steals (1) 2nd base.
So is Eric Gagne...
1) Walk;
2) Bases-clearing RBI double; and
3) Home run

and while I don't massively object to his presence at the moment
I feel sure that come late summer, in September, he’ll be dropped like a stone.
Bottom 9th B:1 S:0 O:0 With Bill Mueller batting, Dave Roberts steals (1) 2nd base.
He doesn't suck
Kei Igawa sucks. Aaarr (nicknamed him. Sounds cute, doesn’t it?) has average stuff. He’s good for the bullpen, and I agree that Timlin or Hansen (or BOTH) should get cut first.

I'd see Aaarr
Has above-average stuff with well below-average control. He has that same kind of “faster than its actual speed” FB like Paps has.
"Are you a real doctor, or a doctor like Dr. Pepper is a doctor?"
Agreed
BTW, I think at least 80% of our pitchers have below-average control. :)

Yeah.
Beckett. Paps. Wake has as much control as you could expect from a pitcher like him. Timlin usually finds the plate okay. It’s with sub-par stuff, at this point, but still.
"Are you a real doctor, or a doctor like Dr. Pepper is a doctor?"
I hope Lester turned a corner with the no-hitter
He’s a pretty good pitcher when not too busy walking guys…

And I’m too lazy to go search it, but he seems to get into trouble very often.

“Not any more!”
A showcase of great pitching tonight

Dang straight.
Broken record at this point, but J-Lo being the second most reliable RP is a problem.
"Are you a real doctor, or a doctor like Dr. Pepper is a doctor?"
relievers will pitch differently when there is a big lead...
They will try to put more stuff right down the plate to get batters to swing, instead of trying to paint the corners. If Hansen or Aardsma came in with a one run lead, they would had pitch differently, and probably pitch more down and away to get a ground out.
The pitcher i am worried about is Papelbon, he seems to have some of his pitches right down the plate.
So...
Are we allowed to rejoice if we pull this off?

Our surplus, touch wood, in starting pitching,
becomes our middle relief at the crunch time.

I've always thought that...
Wake would one day make a marvelous two-inning guy, sandwiched in between 96 mph Josh Beckett and 97 mph Jon Papelbon…

WONDERFUL WORK THERE PAPS
Walk on, walk on With hope in your heart And you'll never walk alone You'll never walk alone
Paps doing, like, a Todd Jones/Joe Borowski routine out there.
I’m not laughing.
"Are you a real doctor, or a doctor like Dr. Pepper is a doctor?"
Papelbon looks very hittable
Papelbon is not looking very intimidating, and he is throwing the ball way too high, even though the speed is okay, which is one reason he is getting these bloop singles… I am pretty concern when the reliever can’t get the deal done without gettting the tying run to home plate.
My god
The tying run is at the plate…
I’m about to spew my lunch all over my keyboard here…

Wow. For awhile, I was worried that
J-Lo might have to handle save situations now too.

You know
Paps isn’t helping himself too much this season in his quest for a big contract.

He really isn't.
He’s been more…hmm. K-Rod than Nathan/inhisprimeRivera this season.
"Are you a real doctor, or a doctor like Dr. Pepper is a doctor?"
Yep
This may mean he won’t get the contract from the Sox. But I don’t know at this point.

All right.
Got me there, but he’s definitely not been “the dominance” on a consistent basis lately. Maybe we’re just spoiled. I don’t remember him having more than 2 or 3 iffy situations in save spots last season.
"Are you a real doctor, or a doctor like Dr. Pepper is a doctor?"
Papelbon is a very good relief pitcher
He isn’t just pitching like a demi god as he did in 2007. He is also either letting his fastball coming in letter high or letting his slider hanging. His two blown saves from Detroit and Minnesota showed a pattern, with or without Lugo’s errors. If he keeps his fastball down, and work on his cutter, that seemed to be almost as good as the great Mariano in 2007, he will still be in the elan of relief pitchers.
At least he isn’t Gagne, I don’t understand why any team would signed him after he was showing he couldn’t seal the deal when he was pitching for the Sox in 2007.
Game
Boy, that was close…
