Around SBN: Can Tebow Say No To Anything?

Hi! I don't belong here! Please be nice...

So, This was the only place I could think to turn. I will say it...I am an Oakland A's fan. I know what you're thinking, "Why is she taking up our space?" Well, I will make this short and sweet so I won't get throw out.

I'm looking to take a trip to Boston for the 1st weekend in August to see the A's play. I'm also going to try to catch one Yankee game. (I know, it makes me puke to say that, but it's just one of those things. Please quit booing me and throwing rotten produce) I live in a hick town in rural Arkansas (No, I don't have any family here...and if I did...I still wouldn't marry my cousin) Anyway, I'm not familiar with Boston at all. I can find it on a map. I can point it out in a book, and know it's in a different time zone, but that's about it. It looks like I'm making this trek on my own, which is kind of scary. Is there such a thing as a nice, safe, close, and CHEAP place to stay? Cheap transportation? Like I said, I haven't been in a city bigger than about 50,000 people in years.....and making a quick 3 day trip on my own is a little scary, but I'll never find anyone to go with me.

I figured I'd come to the source with all my questions.....please tell me what you think, because like most things in life, I have no idea......

This hostel is not too far from Fenway, and I’ve generally had good experiences there.

Boston public transit is generally really great; it’ll get you to and from Fenway, that hostel, and the airport/train stations/bus stations with no problems at all. 3 days is long enough that you should at least think about buying a week-long pass instead of individual tickets, depending on how much wandering you’re planning on doing.

what does it truly mean to "belong"?

nevermind that.

A few recommendations: familiarize yourself with the MBTA system. That’s the mass transit system in and around Boston. http://www.mbta.com I say this because not every transit employee, in my own experience, is not in the sunshiniest of moods on any given day. So don’t take it personal. Just know where each of the four color-coded train lines go [the difference between “Inbound” and “Outbound” is whether it is going towards or away from Downtown Crossing, for instance], and what route whatever bus you’ll be boarding will take.

One possibility for inexpensive lodging might be one of the colleges in the neighborhood [Boston University is closest]. Some schools open up their dorms when school’s out. Might be worth a look.

If you’ve seen a Sox game on TV, then you’ve seen the Citgo sign. Use this as a navigational aide when exploring the neighborhood. http://www.bostonsquares.com/kenmore

DJDP23—-Love your post!!

Enjoy your visit to the great state of Massachusetts!! I will let you in on a secret – MA is the greatest state in New England; Sox fans will help ya out if you are lost (unless you are wearing Yankee gear).

Also—I go to Yankee games in the Bronx all the time & most fans there are OK too so have a good time in NY.

Greatest state in New England? You haven’t been to NH, have you? :)

Welcome to NH

Here’s your pickup truck and hunting rifle. There’s a little bit of Kentucky in New England ;)

I love NH, especially Portsmouth and the Franconia Notch region, but I do like to have a little fun at the expense of the residents. You can do the same for each N.E. state, they all have a unique character.

Northern Vermont is full of hippies (but man! what great food and beer). Southern VT is full of vacationing New Yorkers. Conneticut (west of New Haven) might as well succeed from New England and anoint itself the 6th borough of NYC. It’s hard to generalize Maine, but they’re called “Mainiacs” for a reason. I’ll let others elaborate.

The South of the North, I've heard it said.

Northwestern CT is gorgeous. My wife’s from there. Lots of NYers, but it’s Red Sox country up there.

Can't given any good recs on places to stay...

But welcome to Boston! If you have time, check out the Aquarium – it’s world-class and a lot of fun. Then you can take a short walk to Quicy market and get some classic italian sausage hoogies.

You can take the boy outta Boston, but you can't take the Boston outta the boy.

In Boston

Go to Anna’s Taqueria (http://www.shopannas.com/annas-locations.html). The closest one to Fenway is the Coolidge Corner location.

Good plan

Whilst it may be long winded and probably unnecessary i thought i’d chime in with my contribution.

I’m an Irish M’s fan living in Iceland (yes probably the only one) last summer i spent some time in Boston working at the Kennedy Library for my grad thesis. The good news is that unless you are some kind of crazy person you will absolutely love Boston. I’ve had the opportunity to see hundreds of cities, dozens of countries and six continents – of all the places i’ve been to Boston is my favourite. Blue collar yet cunningly sophisticated, gritty but with insanely nice people and full of incredible things to see and do.

I took in a three game series against the Rays (then they were 100% more satanic) last september. The games were awesome, i got to see a Big Papi walk off, a pitching duel and a huge comeback. I got tickets for the middle game in advance and the other two games i had to queue from 5pm to get on the day sales (a good option if alone). Fenway is literally the greatest place in the world, as are the people that inhabit it. The Red Sox fans get some negative coverage due to the huge amount of sway they have in all star voting, tv schedules etc but when you get to New England you’ll see that this is because they are genuinely infatuated with the team (about 3 seconds after crossing the state line from CT i saw a cement truck with a sox badge across the entire side of the barrel).

I stayed for one night at the Buckminster – literally right next to Fenway and pretty affordable (although I live in Iceland and gas costs over $2.4 a litre here!). After that i stayed at the HI Boston – a Hostel next to the Berklee music school which was really good value with free breakfast etc and lots of discounts available on various attractions throughout the city available to residents. As mentioned earlier public transport (which please forgive me is one of the USA’s few short comings) is fantastic in Boston and will take you everywhere you need to go, although walking is recommended due to lots of cool stuff to see.

Do – aquarium, freedom trail, harbour (or harbor) islands, newbury street
Eat – Chowder and only chowder.

NY is a really different story and one is was about 95% less keen on. I can sum it up by having a Yankee fan explain to me why Ichiro is overrated whilst wearing a Jeter Jersey, oh the irony.

Overall to the original poster – do it, go to Boston you’ll have the time of your life
To the people of Boston – be rightly proud, you have an insanely awesome city.
