And the lineups:

Fluto Shinzawa offers some notes, via Extra Bases. Some key points:

  • Ells and Drewlicious are out on the field, testing their injuries.
  • Tito seems both optimistic and pessimistic about Papi's knee. Says he's at the age where he'll just feel it all the time, but that doesn't mean he can't be effective. Just has to work harder/smarter.
  • People like Brandon Moss. Tito alludes to his ability to play 3 maybe 4 positions. (Definitely LF and RF. CF maybe, 1B maybe) Seems like a good enough audition might lead Sean Casey on the street sooner rather than later. (Ed: This is me speculating a bit. It might not be the case, but they certainly seem enamored/impressed by him thusfar, and he certainly would provide more options on the bench than Casey does).
  • Paps' pickoff move is awesome.
All right. I'm out. Enjoy the game everybody.

Lowrie in / Lugo out

Really? Yay, life’s good! However, AJ vs. Wake is not good for us.

Speaking of pickoff move

Don’t you guys feel that all the time Wake attempts a pickoff, he may throw a knucler? I don’t remember the last time I saw a different pitch from him…

Yeah

The low amount of people here today show how bad this game has been. I can’t believe this last inning ended so quickly.

Wake is off today

The fact that is only a 1-0 game is a statement on how bad this Jays line-up is.

before tonight

the Sox have gone 19 for 121 in the past 4 games. That’s a .157 team average.

keeping a running total...

we’re now batting, as a team, since the start of the series in Tampa Bay, .154

Most disappointing, we had, what, 5 guys batting over .333?

And our batters are not even taking pitches

It took 2 pitches to get Youk out just right now. How many games since the start of the series in Tampa Bay had pitchers throwing at least close to a complete game?

The silver lining...

...is that our starters have lowered their ERAs.

Ortiz about to raise average over .200!!!

That may have to be the victory we settle for tonight.

This is starting to get worrisome.

just got into work

yeah, late start.
And woah, our hitting is really sh*t right now. Does anyone know how many hits we’ve had in our last 5 games? It can’t be more then 15-16?

by sydneysox on May 1, 2008 9:06 PM EDT   0 recs

see above

19 for 121 in the past 4 games.

i was lazy

I didn’t read all the posts before contributing, thanks for that.
19 hits in 4 games, geez, the cubbies got 19 RUNS yesterday.

contact

Are we even hitting the ball hard?

by sydneysox on May 1, 2008 9:19 PM EDT   0 recs

well

at least NY is losing again, they really suck right now.

by sydneysox on May 1, 2008 9:24 PM EDT   0 recs

Here we go

Can we pull this off again?

by sydneysox on May 1, 2008 9:35 PM EDT   0 recs

nope

Not today. Our lineup right now has serious issues, serious, serious issues.

by sydneysox on May 1, 2008 9:45 PM EDT   0 recs

pathetic

team average over the past 5 games is .148

If I were Theo, I’d be livid.

I'd be patient.

These guys can hit. We’re skidding but we’re 4 games above .500 and tied for first place. And our pitching has been excellent for a week.

Pedroia, Youk, Lugo, Drew, Coco and Manny are all better OPS-wise than we were at this time last year. Plus we have Ellsbury. The only two hitters who have been worse are Lowell (with 29 at bats) Tek (80 points of OPS) and Papi. Though Papi is basically where Manny was in April last year, and vice versa.

Point being, don’t panic. The last six games have been rough, .148 average, etc. . The ten games before that we averaged 12 hits and 7 runs a game. Long term, we’ll be fine. It’s not like the Rays are going to keep this up…

Manny ain't the only bad man.

by tommy.otm on May 1, 2008 11:36 PM EDT to parent up   0 recs

hey

The Rays are good. Now NY on the other hand….
Their pitching is disspointing(for them) and that lineup with Posada and A-rod is average at best, jeter is not aging gracefully(see Ripken, Cal)

by sydneysox on May 2, 2008 1:59 AM EDT to parent up   0 recs

sh*t

I meant WITHOUT Posada and A-rod is average at best

by sydneysox on May 2, 2008 2:00 AM EDT to parent up   0 recs

Pitching and defence. That's what wins championships.

(And lots of runs.)

Bottom 9th B:1 S:0 O:0 With Bill Mueller batting, Dave Roberts steals (1) 2nd base.
