Masterson v. Angels
RedSox.com, among other places, is reporting that SP Justin Masterson will be called up to make today's afternoon start versus the L.A. Angels of Anaheim.
Just wondering what your guys' thoughts are about his expectations not just for todays game but for the year? If he performs well against a good offense does he insert himself into that 6th "spot" starter guy?
He's been disgusting at AA Portland posting a record of 1-0 with an 0.95 ERA in four starts after being one of the centerpeices of the Johan Santana trade talks over the winter.

Justin Masterson
I don’t know anything about him, really. I know he’s a big time prospect. Is he like Buchholz-good? Should I expect a No-Hitter? :)

i say
always expect a no-hitter, then, if it happens, you get to say i told you so to everyone, and if it doesn’t, you can say that it was an absurd expectation to have in the first place. it’s win-win.

He has much different pitches. Mostly he throws a sinking/moving fastball and a slider, a poor mans Fausto(sinker-wise) with a really filthy slider he can bust in on lefties. He will throw a changeup as well.
What I liked about Masterson was 1) he was not phased by a very good, probably top 5, hitting lineup and 2) he kept to his game plan with each batter. His matchups with Vladdy and Hunter were solid.

Masterson = filthy
I didn’t see it, but 2 hits in 6 innings of his first major league start? Filthy. I say leave him up ad let Lester find a no pressure atmosphere to learn to trust his stuff.

Didn't get the game
But nice to see that Papi already have 20 RBIs even with the slump.

I did see the game, and Masterson was very good.
Overpowering sinker, mixed with a slider and a changeup. Showed good presence and, but for the bullpen’s asshattery, deserved a W.
I’ve been an advocate for Masterson as starter since we drafted him, and I think this game proves the point. He would be wasted in our pen. If he could handle the innings increase (doubtful, not would he be tested), he’d be talented enough to be our fourth starter this year. He’s been optioned back to AA though.
PS Javier Lopez, you are a frisbee-throwing, lily-livered, walk-issuing INSERT SYMBOLS FROM THE TOP ROW OF THE KEYBOARD HERE.
Throw. Strikes.

Hey!
Don’t insult Frisbee-throwers. Frisbee can be fun ya know, just not in baseball.

If you think frisbee is fun
you should go to a European institution for higher education. They seem to spend all their free time wearing flipflops, smoking foul-smelling cigarettes and playing Ultimate Frisbee :-(
I suggest we option Javier Lopez to the University of Bologna.

We got Bryan Corey back
Sometimes I wonder if we’re trying to have a bad bullpen. What’s next? Trade Paps and Oki for Borowski?

Sox Prospects
http://soxprospects.com/players/masterson-justin.htm
They give a nice scouting report and his MLB comparison is Derek Lowe. I think he has better stuff then Lowe, but similar style pitcher.

Whoa, man hold up, I loved the kid as well, but D. Lowe is a fantastic MLB pitcher. The guy is dealing in LA this year.
IF, Masterson has better stuff than D. Lowe, we might have another Cy Young caliber arm.
Just saying, D. Lowe has the years and the stats to prove he is a top arm in the past 10 years.

DLowe has (has) good stuff
He drank too much and lacked guts on the mound,
I gotta go 'cause I'm probably definitely gonna nod out again.
