Game 3 recap: Red Sox @ Athletics

Summary:

This was a tight game for the Red Sox, who improve to a 2-1 record. The game was much closer than it should have been since 'Tek was robbed of a 2-run HR on a bad call by the umps.

Dice-K went 6.2 innings strong. Mr. Okie-Dokie and Papelbon recorded the remaining outs allowing only 1 hit, notching a hold and save respectively.

Believe it or not, Youk hit a triple.

Player of the Game:

Dice-K had a great outing, striking out 9, walking none, and allowing just 1 ER over 6.2 IP. The 0 BB is the point I'd like to emphasize.

Dice-K will be extremely effective this year if can keep his walks down and be efficient. He threw 64% of his pitches for strikes, which is good, but not exactly "attacking" the strike zone.  Dice-K is going to throw some cheese with his diverse breaking stuff, so 96 pitches over 6.2 is pretty efficient for him. Can he get that IP number up to or over 7?

Game 48: Sox love the WPs

Is this a good format for game recaps?

Let the OTM crew know what you think.

I'd love to include box scores, but that just seems like a major PITA (and I don't mean bread) from a posting standpoint.

All I read in this comment.

...was a lack of commitment. ;-)

Ouch

Since Allen has far more commitment than I, he can post the box scores for game recaps. Thanks, Allen!

We could try

to come to some sort of agreement w/ FanGraphs or a different site to screen shot their box scores. Screen shots ain't so tough.

I like it a lot.

Keep it up, SD.

The graph is strange.

I'd prefer a Chernoff Face representation of how the game went.

Apparently

Calling for sac-bunts makes managers happy. Clint Hurdle looks like a very happy manager, along with Phil Garner and Ron Washington (why do the Rangers sac-bunt?).

Oh, by the way

I'm home with the flu (fun!) and I "happened" to fiip past MLB TV. Apparently it is free today - probably a promo thing.

Few game notes:

1. Dice-K was excellent. Definitely one of his best-pitched games as a Red Sox. His fastball was on and he kept hitters guessing all night. This is the kind of performance we've been looking for him. It may have been against the A's, but they're still a professional baseball team, too.

2. Papelbon was a stud. He struck out the side in the 9th to earn the save. Did he once throw anything outside of a fastball? I don't think so.

3. I question Terry's call to yank Dice-K before the end of the 7th to bring in Oki. It ended up not costing the Red Sox, but I think it would have been fine if Dice-K finished the inning, and then Oki got 3 outs and Paps got 3 outs.

Bases loaded, no out, Manny up

2 Ks and a weak ground out.

Harden is filthy.

NO Ellsbury?

Does anybody have a clue what the Coco/Ellsbury "non-platoon" situation is? Coco looked terrible last night.

He ain't gonna increase his trade value on the bench.

That's my guess.

The situation is "piss Allen off".

Seriously

WTF is up with that? If he Ks two more times today I'm throwing something at my television.
