GameThread: Yankees (5-5) @ Red Sox (5-5)
New York Yankees at Boston Red Sox, Apr 11, 2008 7:05 PM EDT
The rivalry is renewed. Once again, the Yankees are in town.
Tonight's starters for the first of many with the Yankees tonight:
Clay Buchholz has a tall task in front of him tonight. He faces a Yankee lineup that is a little more powerful than what he saw against the Blue Jays in his first start of the season. Buchholz will need his curveball to paint the corners if he wants to shut down the Yankees tonight.
The Yankees send Chien-Ming Wang to the mound tonight. Wang was 3-2 with a 4.11 ERA last season versus the Red Sox. He faced the Sox more than any other team last season.
Tonight's lineups:
Matt's "Live from Boston" Notes:
I have just arrived in the press box after getting numerous things for my newspaper duties. The players are really looking forward to playing the Yankees, as you can probably imagine. The fans that are here so far are just going crazy, even an hour before the first pitch. This should be quite a game, and an amazing series!
Notes: It’s overcast here at Fenway but no rain at the moment. The weather is said to be dicey this weekend. A bit of a surprise as Crisp starts in place of Ellsbury for Boston. Ramirez is 13 of 22 with two homers against Wang. Ortiz (15 of 30, 2 HRs) owns him, too. The lefty batters should expect alot of changeups and breaking balls.

Casey flashing the leather. Looked like it hurt, but a nice play.

A quick, small sample observation: Buchholz isn't nearly as good when he works from the stretch.

Aardsma
I like that kid. Struck out a hot-hitting Molina with the bases loaded.

Will there be a repeat?
I suppose it is a bit early to panic, but with very stuggish hitters other than a few exceptions, fair starting pitching but poor relief, I am beginning to think this team my not have it again this year. I hate watching losing games, especially when it becomes habit!
Okay all you habitually cheerful Sox fans, prove me wrong, and maybe cheer me up?

This game was a mismatch
We were sending our 5th starter against their 1st. (Note: While Wang is the best starter on the Yankees, he is not on the same level as Beckett, Santana, Halladay, or Peavy, as some claim. He doesn't get enough Ks and has yet to show anything in the playoffs.) Sox frontline starters often have real trouble with the MFY, so to see our 5th starter hold them to 1 run in 6 innings is really good and promising. Also, Wang was extremely lucky last night - he wasn't missing bats at all (3 Ks), and many of his pitches were hit to the outfield. Wang is best when his sinker is dominating and hitters can't break out of the infield; while he wasn't hurt last night, if he keeps sending balls into the outfield, he'll get shelled sooner or later. The two batters before J D Drew's clutch, tying HR, both hit blasts to the warning track that on a warm summer night might have left the yard.

Totally
Over the last couple innings, pretty much everyone but Papi was hitting line drives to outfielders. And a bunch of guys hit ropes down the third-base line, but Arod seemed to be positioned behind the bag. With any luck, some of those well hit balls drop or get through, and the conversation today is about the come-backin'-rootin-tootin Red Sox.
That said, there were WAY too any first pitch swings, or at least that's how it seemed to me. Wang was very good, no need to d him any favors.
