Community Projection: Jason Varitek

Today's projection? Well, it's up there, Jason Varitek. Tek is in that part of a catcher's career where he should be steadily declining; however, he rebounded from a mediocre year in 2006 to put up above-average production for the position in 2007. Will there be some uptick due to this being a contract year? A slight decline from last season? ....fall off the table? These are the questions.

Unfortunately, none of these metrics capture the essence of Tek.
Heart Of Team% (HOT%): 100%
Intangibles+: 431+
Value Received Over Ordinary Motivator (VROOM):
16,000

These are advanced metrics that employ MLB's state-of-the-art cliche-tracking system. Whenever Sox personnel, talking media heads, or Sox fans praise Varitek on something other than his actual performance, the team's software registers and rates the praise, compiling these stats.

Not going to be a good hitting year for Tek, good thing that is not why we have him.

I'm guessing a slight bounce-back year in terms of hitting, but probably a small injury... sadly he can't keep going forever...

And, 0157H7, I'd guess more around 105% HOT.

I expect a little decline if he hs to play even the 128 games. Does better with regular rest.

I think 'Tek is going to earn his money behind the plate, not at it.

Probably one of the more difficult players to predict, but I don't see any improvement on the way from our captain.

Last year I thought Tek was too passive at the plate - his OBP was .112 higher than his batting average, compared to a differential of .83 on his career. Not to get all Dusty Baker on your *sses, but I think being too patient is a bad sign for a guy like Tek. It's not as if people were pitching around him.

With him playing for a contract, I think he's going to be a lot more aggressive at the plate and drive the ball better than he has in a few years.

I forgive you Bill Buckner.
