Doug Mirabelli Released
Update [2008-3-13 14:33:32 by Randy Booth]: OK, maybe not big news, but it has thrown a monkey wrench into our roster. I think Kevin Cash will be the backup, even though Nick Cafardo thinks Dusty Brown could take the backup job. I think that's highly unlikely though because his highest level of experience is 8 games at Pawtucket last year. But hey, George Kottaras is hitting .500 right now. Although I'm sure he won't grab the backup job out of spring, he could win a job with a solid year in Pawtucket.
Update [2008-3-13 14:2:49 by Randy Booth]: Big news here. Not sure what to think just quite yet. More news when it comes.
Per rotoworld and the Boston Herald Doug Mirabelli has been released by the Red Sox. The Herald speculates that Kevin Cash will be the new personal catcher of 'Wake, as he demonstrated he could handle the duty late last year.
The article also says that Mirabelli was in uniform this morning and draws that the decision must have been a sudden one.
Looks like Dougie isn't going deep with the Sox in '08.

That's if you don't believe Mr. Rotoworld sidebar. Shocking news, I know.

Re: Doug Mirabelli Released
Defensively, Mirabelli does well at keeping pitches in front of him, probably as well as most anyone/most any backup C in the game today. And how many guys are you going to throw out with Wake on the mound, regardless of arm strength?
I don't know that this would even cost us wins, one if any, but there's got to be more to this story. A simple argument (if they put one out there) that Cash > Mirabelli is on a swiss-cheese level of holes.

Re: Doug Mirabelli Released
Should be interesting to see what happens, though. I'd rather see Brown than Kottaras in a pinch, though.

In other news the Orioles are scouting Brian Corey. He's a longshot to make the team. Did you know Corey is 34? I didn't. Knowing that I won't be too disappointed if he leaves town.

I don't think so.
I just posted this on another thread, but here are my thoughts about the Red Sox trading for a catching prospect. I could be wrong, but I don't think that the Sox are really antsy about their catching situation.
The other option is a trade. Teagarden on the Rangers and Clement on the Mariners are two good targets. However, I think the teams would insist on receiving a pitching prospect with Coco for either of those guys.
My opinion is that Red Sox are still hoping that one of Kottaras, Brown, and Wagner pan out. They'd rather hold on to their pitching prospects and trade Coco for peanuts rather than package a pitcher with Coco for a catching prospect.
