Bartolo Colon signs with Sox

In what isn't quite a head-scratcher, the Red Sox signed former American League Cy Young winner Bartolo Colon to a minor league contract.

The Colon signing is an insurance policy. I still feel like Colon has something left to offer but I'm not sure in what capacity. He'll be good if the Sox need a fifth starter, or if injuries occur at any point. Let's hope he shows up to spring training slimmer and stronger.

Thoughts?

(Oh, and hat tip again to Tippecanoe to breaking it on OTM again.)

Re: Bartolo Colon signs with Sox
This is a great move because it's a minor league contract. Had they given him a major league contract, it wouldn't have been so great.

Re: Bartolo Colon signs with Sox
Bleh. I don't much like Colon (although the opportunities he presents for the media to make colon references probably means they like him).

It is good it's a minor league contract, though. I do hope he has more to offer--his lifetime 146-95 record makes it seem like he's either way past his prime and it's useless to sign him or he's still got something left.

Re: Bartolo Colon signs with Sox
Agreed. It's a can't-lose situation. Colon probably had other minor-league offers (maybe even a major-league low-ball offer), but with the Sox he has an opportunity to pitch for a great team. With Schilling out for half the season (or indefinitely) Roundolo probably likes his chances.

Minor league deal? sure.  Makes ya wonder what happens with  Crisp now. Do we keep him, trade him for more pitching, or a young catcher?

Does the contract have a weight clause?
I gotta go 'cause I'm probably definitely gonna nod out again.

I was joking
I think this is a nothing move because Colon is done.  His shoulder is almost as bad as Schilling's.
I gotta go 'cause I'm probably definitely gonna nod out again.

Worth a flier
No guaranteed salary, so he'll only cost us what he can eat at the clubhouse buffet.
I forgive you Bill Buckner.

Do we really want Colon? I've heard he's a cancer.
And Drugs, of course he has a weight clause. Colons always require clauses.

As in colon cancer?

Yep, that's the sort of high quality humour you'll get from these parts....

Haha, bad, Sydney, BAD!

That's a good chuckle ... I'll be putting that in my holster to whip out during opportune times.

When will a meaningful trade or aquisition be made?

What do you want?
Dustin Pedroia, Kevin Youklis, 2,000,000 and a PTBNL for Alfonso Soriano and Ryan Theriot!

Happy?

Unfortunately, in that scenario, PTBNL = Clay Buccholz.

Exactly the type of pickup they should use for now.  High ceiling, low cost.  He may or may not help them, but he is worth the test drive.
I admire the Patriots, but I LOVE the Sox.

Re: Bartolo Colon signs with Sox
Wow, how bad does Freddy Garcia have to be to get bumped by the "little Mule".

Also, what is Kyle Loshe asking for?  Seriously, everyone has passed, maybe you should drop your asking price...

Re: Bartolo Colon signs with Sox
I get the feeling Garcia is waiting on purpose. What I've read gives the impression that he's not even quite ready to throw off a mound for teams. He may have a better opportunity available a couple months from now when he's healthy. He's younger than Colon and was good more recently (2006 v. 2005, but still).

Lohse? I have no f'in clue what he's doing.

Called it!
I like this move a lot.  If Colon can come back to 75%, this will be a steal.  If he can't, he doesn't cost us a thing.

Re: Called it!
This is my opinion of signing Bartolo.  Maybe he will get motivated and do something for the Sox.  Or...maybe he will get motivated for the Big League type buffets and do something.  I am guessing that the Paw-Sox's Buffet is not as good as the Red Sox.

Food can be a great motivator...=)

Is Curt Schilling's Career Over?
this sounds serious to me.

"...
Both Morgan and the consulting physician believed the injury would not heal without surgery. It is important to note there has never been a major league pitcher who has undergone this surgery. The Red Sox balked, insisting on an extended rehab program.
..."

"...
The window of opportunity for surgery to get Schilling back on the mound has now come and gone as the Red Sox fought the idea. According to Morgan, Schilling has no chance of returning by going the rehab route.
..."

don't give up the hope.
