Papelbon Extension

Edes is reporting that the Sox are trying to lock up papelbon.

No details other than that.  this piece says a 5 year deal are the likely terms - that would buy out Pap's first year of free agency.

i would say 5 years, $50 million would make sense for both sides?  anyone else?

Re: Papelbon Extension
I think we could get a deal done for less than $10M/year.  I know Papelbon is the man, but seeing as we're only buying out one year of free agency, $7-$8M per year would still be a big payday

Re: Papelbon Extension
Schulz, above, is right. I'm good with an extension, but $10M per/AAV is a bit much, even if we factor in that $15M is the likely dollar amount he would normally get for that first year of FA, assuming he stays healthy.

Re: Papelbon Extension
10 million a year is CRAZY for a relief pitcher with four years under our control.  Considering what Rivera + Ryan made in their recent deals,  I think  Papelbon is likely to make:
  1. 500,000
  2. 3,500,000
  3. 8,000,000
  4. 9,000,000
Free Agency
  1. 10,000,000
  2. 10,000,000
  3. 10,000,000
  4. 10,000,000
  5. 10,000,000
Which ends up being 6,200,000 a year over the next 5 years.

If we were to sign him to a 5 year deal, I probably wouldn't go any higher than about 22,000,000 over 5 years, which is only 10 or so million less over that period than he would make if we didn't resign him.  If he throws out his arm this year, that's about 20,000,000 more than he would make.  Right now, we've got the upper hand and it would be crazy to sign him long term for anything more than 25 million.

If it were me, I wouldn't even consider giving him a multi-year deal until after the 2010 season.

Good analysis
I wouldn't even consider giving him a multi-year deal until after the 2010 season.

Unless we can get him for $6m per.

I forgive you Bill Buckner.

Re: Papelbon Extension
He would be if he were a free agent.

But as someone who we're going to pay less than half a million dollars to next year, and most likely less than 5 mil the year after, he's not.

If we hand out big contracts to people who only have two major league seasons, we will Not Be Good For Very Many Years.
