Red Sox sign Casey

Peter Gammons is reporting that the sox have signed Sean Casey to 1 year $700,000 deal. If Gammons is saying it, it must be true. Thanks to OTMer drabidea for reporting it first.

I'm sure Randy, Allen, or SoxDevil will have more later.

Update [2008-2-1 14:50:46 by Randy Booth]: Boston Globe has the story. Gordon Edes reports it's a one year deal for $800,000.

Let's stand up and clap for Theo and crew. This is a great signing in my opinion. Casey is going to be great for the clubhouse, his defense is solid and his contract is cheap. This is a fantastic signing by the Sox.

This is a hell of a lot better than $7M for Wilkerson -- the Mariners can have him!

I like the signing, even if he is the slowest man in baseball :)

We love the slow guys. We ain't exactly a team built on speedsters...

Fantastic?
It's a fine signing, I guess.  Casey can't hit especially well, can't hit for power at all, and can pretty much only play DH.  Maybe an outfield position in a pinch, but he'll bring back memories of WMP if he does.  It's cool that everybody likes him, I guess, but unless Youk or Lowell gets hurt, he won't get more than 100 PA's.  And if someone does get hurt, I imagine Lowrie would come up to fill that person's shoes.  He's a fine placeholder, but is this really all that different from the time we got J.T. Snow?

Re: Fantastic?
Not very different at all.  Or Olerude for that matter.  Jeez, I had forgotten about those guys.  We always seem to have a veteran backing up 1B.

Re: Fantastic?
Only difference is, as I recall, Snow could still move around the bag a bit at 1B.

He's a real life lefty masher
In 2005-07, .326 AVE, .380 OBP, .448 SLG against lefties. That's very nice to be coming off the bench.

Solid pickup. Cheap enough so cutting him later won't hurt. Plus he is famously the friendliest guy in baseball.  He's Hall of Fame nice. Which is nice.

Re: He's a real life lefty masher
Not to mention that at under $1 M it's not a big deal to waive Casey at any time.

I think this is a good, bargain pick-up.

I won't start a new thread
but here is Project Prospect's top five for our prospects.

Do you think Buchholz had his chin surgically removed and implanted into his shoulder for reinforcement?

I like Casey
Something tells me he and Ortiz will get along well.

He's also a career .310 hitter.

Re: I like Casey
Whoa--just realized the typo there. He's a .301 hitter, not .310, sadly...

Anyone know if he is good at hitting the opposite way?

Looks like a pull hitter from this.

Re: Red Sox sign Casey
pitched anywhere close to 150 inning since '94 and even then it was 165.  You really think he'll log 50 innings less than he's been averaging with the Mets?
