Red Sox sign Dustin Pedroia to Extension

[EDITOR'S NOTE by RANDY, 1:56 p.m.] While the Red Sox haven't made a splash in free agency, this may turn out to be the biggest move of the entire offseason. Re-signing Pedroia is absolutely huge. Hopefully Jonathan Papelbon and crew will follow suit...

You saw it here first!  According to ESPN, the Boston Red Sox sign Dustin Pedroia to a 6-year $40.5MM extension through 2014, with an option for 2015!

I couldn't be happier.  I thought it would take way more to extend him.  That's a $6.75MM AAV for the next 6 years.  The article doesn't say how much the option is for.

Thats what I would guess too for a price

Althought ESPN article says:

“It is one of the four biggest non-arbitration deals ever, along with the contracts given to Hanley Ramirez, David Wright and Ryan Braun.”

What about Evan Longoria?

I recall his being pretty large…
Maybe it was more like $35MM

$32MM

Atleast that is what mlbtraderumors says

Cot's is the best place to check.

According to Cot’s, he’s got $17.5 for six years, plus options for $7.5 million ($3 mill buy out), $11 million, and $11.5 million. Assuming all the options are picked up, you’re looking at $47.5 for 9 years. That’s a bit more than $5 million a year, which is ridiculous for a player of Longoria’s awesomeness.

Sounds good

Now, let’s hope he stays healthy.

I gotta go 'cause I'm probably definitely gonna nod out again.

Boston.com reports

“A club source told Benjamin that the Pedroia’s representatives have been working on the deal since mid-August. Massarotti reports that Pedroia will receive a $1.5 million signing bonus and a $1.5 million salary in 2009. He will be paid $3.5 million in 2010, $5.5 million in ’11, $8 million in ’12, and $10 million in both 2013 and ’14. The club option for ’15 is for $11 million, or the Sox can buy him out for $500,000.”

Is it me, or do those numbers not add up to $40.5MM? More like $42MM before the option.

Obviously a great deal for the Sox, although you can’t just compare it to free agent value because he wouldn’t earn at that rate through his arbitration years. And it’s not necessarily a bad deal for Pedroia as he’s now guaranteed $40MM, no matter if his legs are cut off tomorrow. The first million we earn in our lives is 100 times more important than the 100th million.

Nice signing, though its true the sox are only getting 2 years out of this they didnt allready have. (with a third through the option) But great move, itl help keep pedroia happy and isnt pricey for a MVP.

But his arbitration years are for

$3.5 M, $5.5 M, and $8 M. I think that at least those first two years of arbitration will be below what he would otherwise receive.

Great news!

This is the kind of player you want to keep around! A good day for the Nation!

Yay!

Now we have him signed until he reaches an age when he’ll probably start declining: 12.

Good value

Its good value for a solid fielding middle infielder with a lifetime OPS+ over 110. Also, with Pedroia only being 24, this takes him through to 30 which is great for the Sox.
Second baseman tend to have a steep decline after 32 or so the Sox shouldn’t have to pay for that.
Nice work Theo.

Great Home Grown Steal

This deal really works out for the Redsox! Theo and the boys are awesome. Hands down they are the best executives in baseball. 3D is full effect. You DRAFT, DEVELOP, and then get the home town DISCOUNT. It’s a beautiful thing!

by CubFreak on Dec 3, 2008 7:09 PM EST reply actions

What a steal! Figured it would be a lot more.

There’s a really good breakdown of the deal on Fangraphs. They basically conclude that the deal was a huge steal for the Sox. While I’m not sure its as good a deal as he is making it our to be (I think he is underrating the risk that the Sox take on), as long as Pedroia stays healthy I think we’ll be coming out on top.

The deal is very similar to Cano’s with the Yanks, which again shows how much of a steal it was for us.
