Hanley Ramirez, hat tip to MLBtraderumors.com
According to Jon Heyman and Tom Verducci of SI.com, "the Red Sox made a play to re-acquire Marlins superstar Hanley Ramirez after losing out to the rival Yankees for star free agent Mark Teixeira." The Marlins listened, but no agreement was reached and talks have ended. The Marlins coveted players such as Jacoby Ellsbury and Clay Buchholz, but they'd need to be bowled over to trade their young shortstop.
Ramirez, 25, is signed at a discount through the 2014 season.

Smacks of desperation if true.
This one-sentence analysis obviously brought to you by a Sox fan. I wouldn’t mind bringing Hanley back in, and if the Sox bring him back in, then Lowrie could/would then probably be traded for pitching or catching help. I still kind of would rather see Buch give it another go for the Sox.
On the other hand, Heyman and Verducci aren’t always the writers I count on to really be in the know, so I’d rather see this substantiated by someone else closer to the situation of either party.

I'd rather see Buch get traded for a young catcher.
Although if we can get Hanley for cheap (relatively), I’m for it.

According to the article
the Marlins were focused on CF. In which case, we’d send Ellsbury and more to the Marlins, and Hanley would start roaming CF for us. There’s been some discussion that Hanley should move to the outfield, since his defense at SS is questionable at best.
The Fielding Bible had H-Ram at -37 in 2007, although he was neither great nor horrible this year in their rankings.

He's a better hitter, and he'd learn better discipline from our coaches and veteran leaders...
the latter of which is missing from the Marlin’s roster.

He has disclipline.
.400 OBP last year. Or you mean other kind of discipline?

I mean not K’ing every 5 AB’s.

Strike outs don't matter.
I’d rather have outs made be on K’s than GIDPs.

He could walk a few times instead.

Hanley.
I’ve always said that if I could dump 1 player on our team and get any player back in return, I’d probably go Lugo for H. Ramirez. God, that would be sweet.

If we can trick the Marlins into taking Lugo, we would get investigated for mind control devices.

Dependent on what the Marlins want
Hanley is a fantastic player, and if the Sox could get him for say Buchholz + Lowrie + prospects, Sox should make the move. IF the Marlins want players like Youk, Pedroia or Lester, no thanks.
Nice to see Theo thinking outside the box. Now if we can just get Theo to send Buchholz to San Diego for Peavy.

I wouldn't send Lowrie
He walked-off the entire ALDS for crying out loud!

But he might have peaked (minus injury) as a role player.
If we can get a AllStar in exchange for a few spare parts and a bust (IMO), I’m all for it.

They'd want our whole farm system
Hanley is right now the 3rd best player in baseball, imo. Would it be worth it?
Mother---- him and John Wayne!

They forgot that the firesale plan comes after a championship?
Maybe their owner is experiencing economic issues.

as team friendly as his contract may be
it is backloaded and he will be kind of pricey for a team with than small a payroll in a few years. in 2011 he makes 11 mil followed by 15 + mil the next 3 years. im not sure theyd wanna give him up now when he is on the cusp of super stardom but i bet they do trade him at some point before the contract expires.

Definitely
They’ll do what the Rockies did with Holliday and get something for him before he hits the FA market. That is a long way off, but you can bet the Marlins won’t resign him.
