No Tex, No Worries.
So we lost a a very good player, and to the Yanks no less. But lets look at it this way, Over Lowell, he was 8-10 HR's better and lets say 20 poins in average. For 23 mil. it is not worth it. If we got him, all would have been happy with resigning Veritek. We now can get a catcher who can make up that difference. We also don't have the behind the scenes fall out with his contract- Mainly Youk feeling his value is Identical and losing Lowell as a clubhouse leader. Plus we can get some pitching with that cash. If Papi and Lowell have bad seasons it then becomes an issue. If we get Teagarden and he hits .280 with 20 HR's, we lose nothing and have cash to spend. I say no worries, have faith in the ownwership and management that gave us 2 World Series Championships. What say you?

Good job
To calm us down. That is true, but Tex is just good all-around. Oh, well. He is not worth it for 23 mil a year. And now we don’t have a logjam with 1B/3B, and we have more money to go towards catcher/starter/4th OF.
Well, I will appreciate for you to keep my zingers out of your mouth!

Final:
Rocco as our 4th OF
Derek Lowe as our starter
Taylor Teagarden for catcher. Sign Tek, for if TT gets hurt and to teach.
Trade Lowell/Lugo for Teagarden.
Well, I will appreciate for you to keep my zingers out of your mouth!

It’s going to take pitching to get Teagarden.

Lowell/Lugo for Teagarden?
Be realistic, it’s going to take players under the age of 26 to get Teagarden, and, as Randy said, there will have to be pitching going to Texas.

Adam Dunn
That would be very interesting as an acquisition. A super 4th outfielder and infielder

No thanks. Too many Ks for a guy to come off the bench…
by Randy Booth on Dec 23, 2008 9:55 PM EST up reply actions 0 recs
I would love that
But I don’t think Dunn would be very happy to be in a bench role. He’s proved himself to be one of the top 10-15 OFs in the game and so I think he can do better.
by Gnick on Dec 23, 2008 10:04 PM EST up reply actions 0 recs
Exactly
The guy puts up 40HR every year, and has a great OBP despite a high K-rate. Why would he ever take a role as a bench player. We all like to envision rotation systems in which a guy like Dunn moves around through the corner OF, 1B, and DH positions, giving Drew, Bay, Youk, Lowell, and Ortiz the occasional day off, but this isn’t realistic.
by Schulz on Dec 24, 2008 1:05 PM EST up reply actions 0 recs
We already have a better DH.
We don’t have room for Dunn.

Important thing to point out
We didn’t lose Tex to the Yankees, the Angels did. One of our division rivals got stronger, but at the expense of another playoff rival. If the Yankees miss the postseason again, then the Angels should be even easier to walk over.
I think this spending spree will come back to haunt the NYY, if not next year then in the future. Possibly when all these guys are in their late 30s and declining, and they are unmovable because of no-trade contracts.

One thing I don't like about it
The whole rule of a team giving up their draft picks for Top Tier free agents. The Yankees just signed a Type A free agent and only had to give up, what, a 4th and 5th round draft picks? Sucks to be an Angels fan.
The rule needs to be changed for these types of situations, where a team signs more then one type A free agent. I am pretty sure when they made the rule they didn’t expect a team to sign 3 type A free agents.
Just an idea. If this sort of thing happens again. The “Brewers Team” gets Round 1 and 3. The “Blue Jays Team” gets Round 1A and 2. The "Angels team gets NEXT years Round 1 and 1A.
by drabidea on Dec 23, 2008 11:08 PM EST up reply actions 0 recs
No, it sucks to be a Blue Jays fan.
Angels get the Yanks No. 1 pick
Brewers get the Yanks No. 2 pick
Jays get the Yanks No. 3 pick
by Randy Booth on Dec 23, 2008 11:14 PM EST up reply actions 0 recs
Only 1 pick not 2?
Sorry, I don’t know how this thing works. Oh man, poor Jays.
by drabidea on Dec 23, 2008 11:24 PM EST up reply actions 0 recs
They would get those picks
that Randy mentioned, plus a “sandwich round” pick between the first two rounds. This pick isn’t taken from a team, it’s just generated as additional compensation for the team loosing the player.

Wow thats horrible.
The strong get stronger and the weak get weaker. God that is just awful.

But...
The Yankees will make back on Cond. picks with whomever signs Abreu, Giambi, etc. Am I right in saying that?
by DirtySouthSox on Dec 25, 2008 1:49 AM EST up reply actions 0 recs
Completely wrong
Abreu wasn’t offered Arbitration making him a non Type A free agent.
Giambi opted out I believe so he doesn’t grant a draft pick either
Pettitte was Arb eligible but was not offered arb, leaving no draft pick
Pavano was not arb eligible and doesn’t net a draft pick either.
And well.. Moose retired so that obviously gives nothing aswell.
The Yanks don’t care about their farm whatsoever. They just want to win now with all the stellar free agents on the market
by Charged on Dec 25, 2008 3:50 AM EST up reply actions 0 recs
Burnett opted out as well
I don’t think opting out means you don’t get a pick – it’s all about arbitration.
Manny ain't the only bad man.
by tommy.otm on Dec 25, 2008 1:53 PM EST up reply actions 0 recs
Yes, you're correct
But, all those who opted out were not opted arbitration.
Therefore, the Yanks net zero picks while losing atleast 3.
by Charged on Dec 25, 2008 1:58 PM EST up reply actions 0 recs
Ahhh...
This makes me feel a little bit warmer inside. I was afraid that they were going to flip the picks with some of their guys leaving. I think you’re right about their farm system, too. I’ve been completely surprised that they still haven’t traded Phillip Hughes, Ian Kennedy, etc. But don’t worry, I’m sure that the Yankees will pull off something extremely lame like Melky Cabrera for Albert Pujols.
by DirtySouthSox on Dec 25, 2008 7:38 PM EST up reply actions 0 recs
Giambi
Didn’t opt out his option was declined.
by Gnick on Dec 27, 2008 10:12 PM EST up reply actions 0 recs
can you decline an option and still offer arbitration?
I dunno. Either way, they don’t get a draft pick. but they are still paying him $5mil for 2009 in order to buy out the option.
by BTLove on Dec 28, 2008 9:03 PM EST up reply actions 0 recs
Yes, you can decline an option but offer arbitration.

I like your optimism,
but i think you’re kidding yourself if you envision the Yankees missing the post-season. It’s not that hard to imagine the Yanks and Rays holding the top two positions in the division and making the playoffs, while we’re on the outside looking in.
by Schulz on Dec 24, 2008 1:09 PM EST up reply actions 0 recs
It will be competitive.
But its not hard to imagine the Yanks missing the playoffs. Remember they lost Abreu, who is still a really, really good hitter, and they lost Giambi who had an OPS+ of 128 last year. Pretty close to Teixeira’s career mark. It will be a ridiculously competitive division.

This is really what im looking forward too.
C- Taylor Teagarden
1B- Lars Anderson
2B- Dustin Pedroia
3B- Kevin Youkilis
SS- Jed Lowrie
OF- Jason Bay
OF- Jacoby Ellsbury
OF- Ryan Kalish
DH- Chris Carter
Josh Beckett
Jon Lester
Dice-K
Clay Bucholz
Michael Bowden
Justin Masterson
Hagadone
Hideki Okajima
Ramon Ramirez
Manny Delcarmen
Jon Papelbon
Obviously some of these prospects would have to dissapear to get teagarden but this isn’t unrealistic (obviously this is the team in 3 years or so) but this is a team im more excited about then anything, the line-up really takes shape too:
Ellbury
Pedroia
Youkilis
Anderson
Carter
Bay
Teagarden
Lowrie
Kalish

Carter?
You would bat Carter ahead of Bay? And Lowrie and Kalish for that matter?

Carter won’t even be around in 3 years…

idk
i pieced it together quick i’d prolly put bay infront of carter and i don’t know much about reddick

Youk
I hate to say it, but youk might not be around in two years, unless we give him a big payday. He’s made it through his years of playing for the league minimum. 2009 will be the first of two years of arbitration. I expect him to earn about $6MM and $10MM over those years, respectively. Lowell’s contract will end that same year.
So we will need at least one corner infielder. Want to know what I’m thinking? I’ll give you a hint: Pujols’ contracts ends in two years as well…
by Schulz on Dec 25, 2008 10:40 AM EST up reply actions 0 recs
Youk
I would guess he sticks around at 3B, with Lars at 1B or DH. Pujols is a possibility, but I live in Saint Louis and can tell you there is pretty much no way he will leave. The Cardinals aren’t exactly a small market team and he has invested a TON into the community here, he’s the type of guy you can’t imagine will ever play for another team. I would guess he sticks around at a relative discount at something like 8yr/220mil.

The problem with not signing Tex is added risk.
We are now depending on aging starts recvering from injuries (Lowell, Papi, Drew), young players improving (Lowrie, jacoby) and players with breakout seasons mainting a new high level of play (Dusty, Youk, Lester). INow to mention attaining a catcher. If all these things go right, we are the best team in the league. But I doubt they will all go right. With Tex we had a little wiggle room. Now there is very little room for error.
by BTLove on Dec 25, 2008 1:14 AM EST reply actions 0 recs
I agree.
With alot of these comments. I can’t wait for guys like Lars Anderson, Josh Reddick, Michael Almanzar, and Ryan Kalish to come up to the bigs. I just hope Theo trades prospects wisely. The Sox are gonna be fun to watch in the next few years using guys like that, not guys like Tex. Speaking of, his stats make him look kind of like a younger, slower, less talented Bobby Abreu. He’s overrated, and no Yankee fans I am not “jealous” or “bitter.”
