Jason Varitek and Paul Byrd Offered Arbitration
Jason Varitek and Paul Byrd Offered Arbitration
I think it is a good move by the red sox offering these guys arbitration. Jason Varitek is a type A free agent and we will get some draft picks if he goes elsewhere or if he accepts we sign him to a one year contract. With Paul Byrd we get a sandwich pick if he signs elsewhere since he is a B type Free Agent.

I think this means we'll see Tek for another year
At least it means we’ll give Exposito another full season for him to show if he can be our future catcher.
Mother---- him and John Wayne!

Agreed about Tek
It also means the Sox will be overpaying him when he (eventually) accepts arbitration.
I gotta go 'cause I'm probably definitely gonna nod out again.

Not too bad
We will be overpaying him but we are only in for one year so I am ok with the extra pay.

Wasn't offering arbitration a foregone conclusion?
No offer, no draft picks. I think there’s still a decent chance he signs elsewhere, at least as much of a chance as before he was offered arbitration.
Manny ain't the only bad man.

I disagree
I think now that he will cost a potential team a first-round pick, no one will sign him. A team like the tigers would rather have a first-round draft pick, and an inexpensive Greg Zaun, than Jason Varitek.

The Yanks didn’t give most of their guys arbitration. Bobby Abreu was a much better player last year than Jason Varitek by any measure (except intangibles) and they didn’t give him arb. I think this signals that the Sox think they can get Varitek back at a paycut because of the year he had. Also that they are happy to have him back for another year.

The MFY were afraid Pettitte and Abreu would accept arbitration
And they’d be stuck with both players at $16+ million. They’re trying to get Pettitte to accept a pay cut, and they’d probably have kept Abreu at less money. As for the Sox, Theo likes draft picks. Boras is looking for more than 1-year for Tek. And, I don’t think the Sox would be too upset if Tek accepted arbirtration.

I guess my point was that it was not a foregone conclusion with Tek. Abreu at $16mil is probably a better deal than Tek at $11mil.

I’m amazed at, -what I think is the economy, having an impact on the hot stove the way it appears to be doing.

Dunn
Absolutely. The Arizona D-Bags didn’t offer arby to Dunn – which could very well have netted them two draft picks. Now they lost Owings, Buck and Castillo for two months of power and no playoffs. Sad.
