Jacqueline Peavy?

MLBTR says so.

The Red Sox have "some" interest in Peavy, but as of a few days ago the teams had not entertained any substantive trade talks as Padres GM Kevin Towers knew that Boston was not on Peavy's wish list. But now that talks with Atlanta and the Cubs have broken down, Towers needs a new team to deal with and the 27-year-old Peavy, according to his agent, Barry Axelrod, probably would OK a deal to Boston. But if there's a Mark Teixeira splash, the Red Sox might not have the money to entertain it

What could we realisticly expect to trade for Peavy? Bowden or Buch? I've seen the offers from the Cubs and Braves, and both were shit or pretty close to being shit, so maybe we don't have to give up on Buch. Maybe Bowden + Masterson + Kalish would get it done, but I just don't know. Peavy has a very nice K/BB rate, and a low career FIP. He's also a groundball pitcher of sorts. Jake would be a nice addition to any team that gets him.

Oh, and the fanpost title comes from an answer I gave to a friend of mine regarding projections. I said 'projections are worthless, because as far as we know, Jake Peavy might have sex reassignment surgery and become Jacqueline, ten time ice skater world champ'. Jake is also a bit on the girly side of the force.

The Sox can't afford both Peavy and Teixeira

Recently, Rob Neyer had a Peavy chat. There’s some interesting stuff in there.

I gotta go 'cause I'm probably definitely gonna nod out again.

Yeah, agreed

And nice stuff on the link indeed. I don’t think the Sox will make a serious run at Peavy, but he would be a nice addition if we can’t land Tex. Bowden or Masterson likely would not give us his production in the time he’s signed, and he would improve our rotation. Getting him while keeping Buch and Lars is an epic win.

Mother---- him and John Wayne!

How stupid is Towers?

Would he take Lowell and/or Lugo in the trade? Unfortunately, I know the answer to my own question and that is no. I think this is the only way we could afford Peavy and Tex.

I don't know

He was smart enough to trade Mirabelli back to us for Bard and Meredith (not one of Theo’s best moments). :-)

We should stop the madness

No team would ever take players like Lugo, Lowell, Zink, Pauley, Hansack or whatever in trades for good players. Even Lowell would likely only net us prospects, if that much.

Not saying that you done that

But I’ve seen trade proposals involving abominations like Pauley more often than not.

Agreed

Unless for some reason Towers took a stupid deal like that I can’t see us being able to afford Lowell, Lugo, Tek and Peavy. Also factor in all of the young guns and studs we need to sign in the next couple of years.

by drabidea on Dec 18, 2008 3:31 PM EST up reply actions

Yep

Tek and Peavy is just too much money on a bad time for such.

Why cant the Red Sox Afford Peavy?

They seem to be in on D. Lowe who is asking for $15 million a year. Seems like both are around the same price tag.

by SoxAcumen on Dec 18, 2008 2:29 PM EST reply actions

They aren't in on Lowe

They won’t make their #4 starter their highest paid pitcher. And they won’t go anywhere near 4 years/$60+ million, which is what Lowe/Boras is looking for.

I gotta go 'cause I'm probably definitely gonna nod out again.

by Drugs Delaney on Dec 18, 2008 3:06 PM EST up reply actions

Agreed

The only reason we are “in” for Lowe would be for a discount. We assume there would be a discount because he said he wanted to play for the Sox.

I still dont see the problem

Peavy’s contract is not crazy, in fact this extension will be a bargain in a year or two of FA signings. You add 5 or 6 million each year to Schillings contract. Big deal. No way the Red Sox will have a problem with a young ex-Cy winner who is locked up for 5 years just bc of 5-8 million extra a year.

If Peavy is really interested in the Red Sox, I would say pull the trigger (depending on what the Padres want).

Plus there really isnt an option in the FA market for 2010 that I like more than Peavy.

Dont we have rednecks and hunters on our team as well? Cant Beckett become Peavy’s BFF?

Don't forget

about putting money aside if we ever want to sign Bay, Youk, Lester, Papelbon, Delcarmen, or Lopez?

by drabidea on Dec 22, 2008 2:00 PM EST up reply actions

Not big on Peavy

His splits and homers are worrisome. He plays in a weak hitting division with three extreme pitcher’s parks, including his home.

Manny ain't the only bad man.
