Rocco Baldelli healthier than thought

UPDATE: Poll attached.

It appears that Rocco Baldelli's disease is not so untreatable after all according to numerous sources including tampabay.com

His doctor at the Cleveland Clinic has since reviewed further and more sophisticated testing that indicates his condition is a less-severe and treatable channelopathy. With a modification of medicine Baldelli is currently taking and having good results from, he is optimistic about his health and his baseball career.

I thought he would make a great 4th OF before this discovery.  Now I'm behind it 100%.  Rocco is a RHH so he could play for Drew or Ellsbury against a tough lefty.  He's got some pop, and his career .AVG/.OBP/.SLG are .281/.325/.445

Now that Baldelli looks healthier, should the Sox try and sign him to be their 4th outfielder?

I was going to post this on the front page…

This definitely helps in trying to bring him to Boston. Last thing I knew though, was that Boston hadn’t talked to his agent yet…

I think this hurts.

If this is true, then there’d be no reason for teams to not look at him as a starter, and if his health allows, I’m sure he’d prefer to start.

I was about to post the same thing.

Though maybe he’d take a one year deal, to prove he’s healthy.

And to clarify

This is great news for Rocco Baldelli and baseball in general. Just not great news for the Sox and the quest for a better 4th OF.

I think you are right.

Last year he made 2.25 mill. He has said with his new treatment, he wants to play on a more regular basis. If he saved his money right. He could easily sign a Bartolo Colon type contract with any team that needs an OF. I think he would rather do this and start full time, then take a more lucrative bench role.

It also comes down to how long the treatment and recovery takes. He also might be a huge Red Sox fan too.

Either way, Congrats Rocco, hope you get to play for many years to come.

by drabidea on Dec 18, 2008 12:46 PM EST up reply actions

Not so Untreatable you say?

Well it’s not, not good news. I’d wait to see how he recovers and how long that takes.

If he rebounds well he might be worty for a longer contract – at a starter position.

Man do I hate Longhorn fans, well except for the ones that actually went there.

Rocco is one talented motherfucker

If he signs with us or not it’s not really what I care. I just want to see him playing baseball healthy, because he’s awesome. And that means he’ll want to start. If not, hey, passing on him would be DUMB.

Only a .325 career OBP?

Little thin there.

Yes, surprised me too.

I think people are jumping in the deep end a bit here. Yes, he was misdiagnosed. But he hasn’t been treated or cured yet. Misdiagnosis doesn’t suddenly make him qualified to be a starting outfielder in 2009.

Way OT, waaaay OT, I'm sorry

But I just found out that Catch Me If You Can is actually ranked higher than Chasing Amy on Metacritic. WTF?!

Chasing Amy is one of the top twenty

worst films I have ever seen. (This isn’t off topic. This stuff is crucial.)

Chasing Amy is the second best movie of the 90's

Second only to Boogie Nights. Even Ben ‘Daredevil’ Affleck wasn’t able to screw that thing.

Wait...

Regardless of the quality of Chasing Amy, Catch Me If You Can was the one the best movies in recent memory. It was so lighthearted and yet so emotionally powerful at the same time, plus great acting, writing, and directing.

by Gnick on Dec 19, 2008 11:10 PM EST up reply actions

I can easily see why it would be.

Honestly, Catch Me if You Can is an underrated little movie. My hatred for the fawning over Leonardo DiCaprio was huge in the Titanic-era, but he’s more or less (or maybe always has been) a pretty good actor. Hanks did a great job of losing himself in the role, and it had a little bit of something for everybody.

The plot in Chasing Amy wasn’t great. I enjoy Jason Lee in most everything he does (except Scientology, though that’s a discussion for another day and place), and ‘Banky Edwards’ was no exception. I like the comedic parts of Chasing Amy. Ben Affleck is okay in it, Joey Lauren Adams – meh.

The Departed rocked.

Hole new respect for Leo after that one.

This

Couldn’t agree with you more. That movie changed my opinion of Leo significantly, and as everyone knows, my opinion is very important among everyone.

Let me play GM for a moment.

What if we sign him to an incentive-laden contract for a year. See how he performs as a backup. Say, he reaches a certain number of games played, the amount of cash increases and such.

Then here is the ordeal next year, J Bay and R. Baldelli become free agents. Granted that Baldelli is a RF by nature, we could see how well his performance was this season as 4th OF. If he performed well and Bay slumped, you could bring him in as the LF next year. If Bays asking price is too high and we liked what we saw from Baldelli, bring him in as the starter. Even then, Baldelli would still be cheaper. probably 10mm or so a year, if that and he is only 27 if I recall correctly.

I’d say its a win/win to sign him as fourth outfielder on a one year incentive based contract. First win being that he does his job and then could resign next year as our 3rd outfielder if our other FA OF is too high in price. The other win being that he performs not up to par. We can then look at it and say it was only a year long contract on very low pay. Hope to see him in a Sox uni sometime soon

IF

he really is healthy and can play everyday, which the Red Sox 4th outfielder has to be able to do, sure I am all for Rocco.

My problem with Rocco was that he is unable to play everyday. Since that is not an issue, would love to have him on the Sox.

by SoxAcumen on Dec 18, 2008 2:20 PM EST reply actions

Yeah

I was kind of halfheartedly for him before, but now am definately making him in the top three we should sign this offseason (Tex, catcher.)

Well, I will appreciate for you to keep my zingers out of your mouth!
