Teixeira to choose between Red Sox and Nationals within 48 hours
According to Peter Gammons via MASN Sports, Mark Teixeira will make a decision within 48 hours and the final two teams appear to be the Red Sox and Nationals:
I'm told that Peter Gammons just offered the opinion on SportsCenter that Mark Teixeira will make a decision within the next 48 hours, and the choice is down to the Red Sox and Angels.
And so it goes...
Update: I should stress that I didn't see the report. Just going by what I was told. And now I'm hearing that he actually said Red Sox and Nationals. Either way, he left out the Orioles. Anyway, my apologies. But read on anyway.
I believe that the Red Sox are in the thick of things, but I was under the impression that the Angels were bowing out. Manager Mike Scioscia seemed to be conceding defeat when he said, "We gave it our best shot," and started talking about Manny Ramirez.
[...]
So now we have Gammons excluding the Orioles, Karl Ravech pushing them front and center, and a whole bunch of fans who are more confused now than they were 24 hours ago.
If I could find anything like this on the internet outside of MASN, I would ... but I can't. So take this as you will. Did anyone see SportsCenter to vouch for this? I hope it's true not because I want Teixeira to be a Red Sox, but because I am sick of following every move of this man 24 hours a day, seven days a week...

I’m with you. I think I’ve visited the Red Sox Shortcut on my blackberry every single hour since December 1st.

Gettin’ old, huh?
Damn Mark Teixeira… I’m going to hate him no matter what by the time this thing is over…

Couldn't you have put...
“…And now I’m hearing that he actually said Red Sox and Nationals.” in the title…so I didn’t break stuff in anger…not that the Nationals didn’t get Teixeira, but because DC’s planning on moving on Dunn if they don’t get Tex…

Hmmm..
If its Sox vs Nats, I see him signing with the Sox since he stated he wanted to be on a contender
Sox vs O’s? Toss up, to be honest.

Unless the Nats offer
is really really good? I mean A-Rod said he wanted to go to a contender way back in the day and ended up in Texas. Or Beltre ending up in Seattle. Or really, any player.
Tex does look like a nice happy fit though. If he ends up with the Nats … well at least he’ll be used to the losing tradition after having been in Texas and all.

It's only mid-December.
This could have been drawn out much longer, assuming the above is true. With Boras in the mix, my feeling is that it’s not over yet.
I am ambivalent about signing Tex, with a slight edge to the negative camp. Tex is an exciting player, but I look at him and worry about a Todd Helton-like decline paired with a Todd Helton-like contract, leading to a positively Todd Helton-sized waste of money. Todd Helton.

The thing with Tex is that he's a 1Bman
Those aren’t really hard to replace… I still want the Sox to sign him, mainly because I think he’s amazing and is likely going to age better than Helton. But if we don’t sign him and the MFY don’t too, I’m pretty happy.
Mother---- him and John Wayne!

I understand that completely
I don’t want Teix or Manny on the MFY. As things stand now, they may score fewer runs in 1009 than they did in 2008. They really need a bat. I’m hoping Teix goes to Washington and Manny stays with the Dodgers.
I gotta go 'cause I'm probably definitely gonna nod out again.

Agreed
Manny and Tex are too dangerous, and they have just what the MFY’s lineup is lacking.

I'm afraid if the Sox sign Teix
It increases the chances of the MFY getting Manny. The MFY will definitely react to any big name Sox signing. Manny is a better hitter than Teix and with a short-term contract, he’ll be easier to sign to big money. If Teix goes to Washington, the Angels and Dodgers will likely battle it out for Manny.
I gotta go 'cause I'm probably definitely gonna nod out again.

Can't we front-load the contract?
Seems to me that it’s better to pay more while you’re getting more. And we might be able to trade him if production falls and he’s making less.
Pay Teixeira $30 M the first 3 years, and then he’ll have a below-market contract for the remaining years.

Teixeira's destination
IMO, it’s equally as bad if the Angels or Yankees sign Tex.
by Schulz on Dec 17, 2008 1:44 PM EST up reply actions 0 recs
I disagree
If Teix stays with the Angels, they are the same team they were last year—a first round exit. If he goes to New York, an average AL offense gets much better.

Angels
I wouldn’t count the Angels as an automatic first-round exit. I think we got extremely lucky this year that they underperformed. They have a great lineup and rotation. I thought they were the best team in the AL before they got Teixeira.

Yes
despite my stubborn arguing on another thread, I think I feel like Ecoli does: I an ambivalent leaning towards negative on this. It just seems so wierd to spend such a bundle on a 1b when you have that position covered, you have to cut and paste in uncomfortable ways as the team is already constructed, and you are already one of the strongest contenders in the AL.
I was thinking over all of the “market value” comments. They seem ironic given what has just happend in the economy. I mean, the appt I just bought would have gone for 50% more 2 years ago. That was “market value” then. The fact that the players in this game are the Angles who desperately need Tex (and payed Kotchman for him already), 2 hometown teams being silly (eg with no chance with or without Tex) and us and the MFY should put this “market value” talk into perspective.
by Buzzy on Dec 17, 2008 9:41 AM EST up reply actions 0 recs
I'm a little less ambivalent
I’m probably 75-25 against wanting Teix, even though he is a very good player. I think the signing screws with the Sox’ salary structure. Boston will have to overpay to keep Bay, a similar hitter, and other players. As I said in my reply to MerryGoByeBye, if the Sox sign Teix I think Manny goes to the MFY.
The Sox are already a very good team without Teix. They should focus on improving at catcher rather than incremental improvements at 1B or Teix over Lowell.
I gotta go 'cause I'm probably definitely gonna nod out again.

But remember the 2008 ALCS?
We were lacking one decent hitter. You can’t count on Mike Lowell to be healthy.

Tex is a better hitter than Bay.
Bay has a HUGE weakness with breaking balls. IIRC, the NL is more of a fastball league. I’d be surprised if he puts up the same numbers that he has in the past.
Manny ain't the only bad man.

If signing Tex means letting Drew walk,
I’m ok with it. Although having Tex, Youk, and Bay on the same team would be nice, not to mention Ortiz. And Pedroia. And Drew… man our lineup would be filthy.

Think of our lineup, man:
Ellsbury
Pedroia
Ortiz
Teixeira
Youkilis
Drew
Bay <—- BAY/DREW/YOUK WOULD BE THE NO. 7 HITTER! THAT’S NUTS!

Bay
Tex is a better hitter than Bay, but it is closer than you think. As for the weakness, yes but he is also a great mistake hitter and pitchers in both leagues make em. In the limited spit last year Bay:
BOS AL 49 184 39 54 12 2 9 37 3 0 22 51 .293 .370 .527
and playoffs:
11 41 6 14 3 0 3 9 9 12 .341 .471 .634 0 0 0 0 1
So in over 200 ab against good comp (late season AL East+playoffs) he was very good. He has a good plate demeanor, when fooled he just comes back again (witness the Lackey playoff game). We will see in a bigger sample next year, and indeed he may well be exposed. BTW-Tex was worse in the NL, interestingly.
by Buzzy on Dec 18, 2008 8:30 AM EST up reply actions 0 recs
Lackey messed up.
Bay couldn’t hit his curve, and Lackey threw something straight.
He’s going to get a steady diet of breaking balls. I don’t see him hitting .290 again.
Manny ain't the only bad man.
by tommy.otm on Dec 18, 2008 8:57 AM EST up reply actions 0 recs
Even
Bay will hit a bad breaking ball. A steady diet of breaking stuff was the strategy of both the Angles and the Rays. Eventually you have to throw something else or you make a mistake. Bay still was just about the best Sox hitter in the playoffs.
Tommy-I have noticed that you like to trust your eyes/“schools of thought” more than stats. Maybe you should be a scout! Just kidding-actually in this case I do worry about Bay, when he whiffs on a bendy pitch he looks so damn bad. However I worry more about Jacoby’s plate adjustment than Bay’s for next year.
by Buzzy on Dec 18, 2008 9:16 AM EST up reply actions 0 recs
JD Drew does the same thing
Most hitters have trouble with good breaking and off-speed stuff—unless they are sitting on it. Otherwise, they hit mistakes. The best hitters make picthers pay for mistakes. Not everyone is Manny Ramirez.
Has anyone seen enough of Teixeira to say he isn’t the same? I didn’t see a lot of extra-base power in the 4 post-season games against the Sox. The numbers say Bay and Teix are similar hitters. That’s enough for me.
I gotta go 'cause I'm probably definitely gonna nod out again.

Even Manny guesses
You can tell what he’s looking for by his footwork during his swing. Remy & Orsillo have pointed that out on more than one occasion.

Precisely-
despite the valid knock on Bay, he seems to be a very very good mistake hitter.
Another thing that would be interesting to track is HR power. Not counting the limited number of at bats by Tex for LAA, his HR power seemed quite inflated by playing in Texas. His HR/AB looks really down in ATL. Bay on the other hand played in one of the worst HR parks for righties in all of baseball (although it might be misleading as he is not a classic pull hitter). Fenway is HR neutral for righties, and HR negative for lefties. I would not be surprised to see Bay show as much or more HR power as Tex does on the Sox. Tex, however, will really take advantage of OBP-elevating Fenway regardless.

I watched Peter Gammons tonight at 6ET. You pretty much posted what was said…
The news was that a source close to Tex said he was going to make a decision in a few days. Peter said that he thought the teams in the hunt where: Angels, Nats, O’s, Sox, Yanks. Peter also said he thought that the choice could come in 24-48 hrs with the Angels and Sox in the lead for Tex.

They are more than one very good bat away from contending. Then again, once some of those prospects develop 3-4 years from now and they still have Tex, they could be dangerous. Good thing we probably won’t have to worry about that.

Tex going to the Nats is harmless.
I’d prefer that over the Orioles, who we have to play 17-19 times per year.
