Mark Teixeira leaning towards Os?

According to ESPN's Karl Ravech, Mark Teixeira is leaning towards accepting the Orioles' offer. For the video, click here.

OK. Let me just step back and look at this. Who is our source? Karl Ravech! He's the essentially the play-by-play guy for Baseball Tonight! This isn't Peter Gammons or Tim Kurkjian or even, God help us, Steve Phillips. This is a Karl Ravech! He's not a guy "in the know." He's the guy that goes, "Hey, what do you think about this? What do you think about that?" He isn't paid to have an opinion by ESPN because that's not his job. Why is this even making news?

I'll just end the rant there. I think you can all see where I'm coming from with this...

If he goes to the Nats or Os

its still a win for the Red Sox. Maybe not as good as Teix playing 1b for the Sox, but he is on a team that cannot hurt the Red Sox and seriously hurts the Angels. Plus, this would almost guarantee Manny in Anaheim, which will be fun. Scoscia v. Manny will be better than Parcells v. T. O..

Sox save their money, sign an arm or two, get a 4th OF and lets see what happens in Spring Training.

Even without Teix Red Sox have to be the favorites in the AL east in 09.

By most accounts, Teix will go where the money is

In that way, he is a lot like A-Rod. Teix wants his payday. He has waited his whole career tio be a free agent. If he ends up in Washington or Baltimore, I’m OK with that. I don’t even care if he stays in LA. I just don’t want him or Manny in NY.

I gotta go 'cause I'm probably definitely gonna nod out again.

Besides wanting to play close to home

it would make no sense for Tex to go to Baltimore or Washington. He got a taste of playing for a winning team at the end of last season, he’s not going to go to a team like Texas again. Especially since it seems Boston is offering just as much, if not more, than the aforementioned loser teams.

Unless, of course, the O’s/Nats really do have the biggest offer on the table and he doesn’t care about winning, just the money…

I hate this off-season.

You know what,

Teix with the Orioles wouldn’t surprise me all that much.

Apologies, only just noticed the question.

Well, and this is probably already defunct given the news story above this one, but
a) they could give him c.$180m, which would probably do it, and he would end up in an improving offensive lineup at
b) his ‘home’ club, but regardless
c) I’ve had the strongest feeling about this off season that we wouldn’t sign ANYONE.

We need to do something.

by matzushocka45 on Dec 16, 2008 7:33 PM EST reply actions

Why?

We’re ok without Tex. Although I agree we should improve our club, it’s not essential to do anything besides get a C and a 4th OF.

I find it amazing...

That he’d go to the O’s or Nat’s for what? An extra 10-15mil over 7-8 years? When you are pulling $160+ mil over 8 years, can an extra $10 mil really make that big of difference?
For me it wouldn’t. I’d much rather play for a club that will be willing to utlise their resources to try to win the series every year.
Why go somewhere where the attitude is “we are hoping to make the playoffs?”
I say f*ck that, I’d go somewhere(Bos, LA, NY) where the attitude is “we are aiming to win it all this year and anything less is failure.”
Is $10 mil over 8 years worth subjecting yourself to mediocrity? I never would and anyone who does for a pittance is an effing moron in my book and I wouldn’t want him on my team. ’nuff said.

It seems he could make that back in endorsements playing in Boston

If he could make significantly more to play in Baltimore, or wherever, I would understand signing there. But if the difference is minimal I wouldn’t understand it at all. Maybe he wants to go back to his home town team and bring them out of obscurity? I dunno.

Endorsements?

I’m envisioning the heads of Bernie, Phyl, and Bob (of Bob’s Furniture) collectively exploding when they try to fit T-E-I-X-E-I-R-A into some ad.

Also, what is it with the Sox and 1Bmen with tough names to spell? Mientkiewicz, Youkilis, and now possibly Teixeira…

Boras

S. Boras is behind Teixeira and everyone knows he cares little for what happens to his clients outside of how much money they get and how much he makes.

Boras is using the Red Sox to set up a bidding war between LAA and the Dodgers for Manny.

He needs the Red Sox to up the price so that the Nats, Os or Red Sox pay close to his 10/200 number. If Teixeira signs with LAA, Boras and Manny are screwed. MFY are not really interested in either. So he priced out the Angels knowing they will come to him when Teixeira signs with an east coast team and they need Manny to keep up with the Red Sox, Tampa Bay, MFY and the White Sox (likely teams for the 09 playoffs).

To be honest Boras has done a masterful job at orchestrating the entire off-season. Wait till he sells D. Lowe as a Cy candidate and convinces the Mets they cannot win without D. Lowe in the rotation for 5 years 18 million a year.

Spot on.

However, I’m always very sus of anyone who would hire that charlaton as their agent. Sure its nice to maximise your value financially. But we are talking a silly amount of money and regardless of where you end up, you’ll still get sh*tloads. If we wants to go home, then I get that, it makes sense.
But your baseball career generally represents about 1/5 of your entire life(and that’s if you are really, really good). Wouldn’t you want to maximise that value by playing for a team with a proven track record?
If it were me, lifestyle choices, the FO of the team, where my kids would go to school, where I’m spending my offseason…all those things come into play.

Mark Teixeira

All I can say is that if Teixeira goes to the Yankees, I will consider him another greedy traitor. I will never be able to root for him again.

Do you feel that way about every Yankee? Who is he betraying [re: traitor]?
