Baseball America's Top 10 Red Sox Prospects, 2009
BA likes several of the recent draftees - Casey Kelly is #6 (with the "Best Curveball" in the system), and Ryan Westmoreland is #7. Some good stuff here. For instance, I'd never heard of Zach Daeges before, but his numbers are pretty cool (.412 OBP in AA this year).

I like what I see there. We’ll be updating our Top 20 list very soon…

That's a very rosey report from Baseball America
For a big-market team the Red Sox were quick to identify that home-grown talent is the way to go, and that’s paying huge dividends.

Hagadone the 3rd best prospect is a stretch
It just is… Oh, and Zach Daeges could be a poor man’s Kevin Youkilis. Yay!
Mother---- him and John Wayne!

IIRC
The first poor man’s Kevin Youkilis was Youk himself. In Moneyball at least, his ability to hit for power was questioned, and he was described by some scouts and Beane himself as “a fat third baseman.” Soxprospects.com questions Daeges’ defensive skills, and ability to hit for power.

I don't have the numbers here, and I'm too lazy to search it right now
But as far as I remember, Daeges is not that far from where Youk was when he was the same age. Could be wrong, however.

Numbers:
Daeges, 24, AA: 108 games, .412 OBP
Youks, 24, AA: 94 games, holycrap.487OBPhigherthanhisSLGpctOMFG.
Not low on Daeges, but Youks was otherworldly w/r/t plate discipline in his days in the minors.

It's all good.
I could hardly believe Youks’ OBPs from pre to AA when I saw them. Ridiculous. Absolutely ridiculous.

Exactly right on Hagadone.
I like him, but cripes.

Cripes?
He’s a 6’5", 230 lb lefty who can hit 98, has a nasty secondary pitch, has recently gotten his shoulder cleaned up and is supposedly recovering nicely.
I’d rank him higher than Bard, if only because starter > reliever. Reddick could’ve challenged him, but then he went and hit .214 in AA. I don’t think anyone else is close. Kelly and Westmoreland could both be nasty, but it’s hard to project them so soon after they were drafted.

I'd like to wait and see how that shoulder looks in game action.
Otherwise, I agree with you. As it is, we know Bard is healthy and able to pitch. We don’t know that for sure with Hagadone.
Reddick scares the F out of me. He could easily be Francoeur redux.

Well. And "cripes"
Was too strong a word. I like Hagadone, but he’s a BIT of a ? at this point.
And I feel like Reddick could be better than Trot, at least in the HR/power department. Trot also had better on-base skills, which is what scares me about Reddick.

Am I the only one who has never said "cripes" before?
and Trot was a damn good hitter in his prime.

Picked the "cripes" habit up from my Dad.
I think it’s his non-expletive expletive of choice.

BA loves to overrate the draft
These guys are pretty obsessed with the draft and a lot of times overrate the recently drafted and underrate international prospects. Its pretty clear here with Hagadone and Kelly so high even though they’re pretty far off and haven’t really done anything yet.
by BTLove on Nov 13, 2008 12:50 PM EST 0 recs
Yes. This is true.
Their rankings are based on discussions with scouting and player development staff, so they tend to value raw stuff more than actual production, and to give high rankings to recent draftees.
When deciding player rankings myself, I like to give more weight to prospects who have succeeded throughout the minors and are close to the majors than exciting recent draftees (e.g. Casey Kelly).

Am I the only one who cried while reading the 2012 Projected Lineup?
Tears of joy that is. This team would F’N ROCK:
Catcher Luis Exposito
First Base Lars Anderson
Second Base Dustin Pedroia
Third Base Kevin Youkilis
Shortstop Jed Lowrie
Left Field Jason Bay
Center Field Jacoby Ellsbury
Right Field Josh Reddick
Designated Hitter David Ortiz
No. 1 Starter Jon Lester
No. 2 Starter Josh Beckett
No. 3 Starter Clay Buchholz
No. 4 Starter Daisuke Matsuzaka
No. 5 Starter Michael Bowden
Closer Jonathan Papelbon
Also, we really like the kids with “J” names, don’t we?

Yes, we do.
We may see a future where everyone on the team is required to choose names that begin with J. Then we’d start Javid Ortiz, Jay Buchholz, and Jaisuke Jatsujaka. They could call us the Red Jays.
