Rumors
Yankees Rumors: Teixeira, Manny, Mussina (http://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2008/11/yankees-rumors.html)
So the MFY may not want Tex. That helps us, although I'm not sure I like the idea of Manny in pinstripes, especially because it won't look right all baggy. :) Mussina might come back to get to 300, which would start up more "Is he the last?" debates. You'd think they'd realize that if they keep having to have those debates, then there obviously is going to be another.
Hank: Yanks Will Consider Manny (http://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2008/10/hank-yanks-will.html)
Same as above
Options Declined: Taguchi, Gordon, Counsell, Embree (http://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2008/10/options-taguchi.html)
Anybody want to make an offer on Jason Michaels, So Taguchi, Tom Gordon, Craig Counsell, or Alan Embree (again)?
Rangers To Shop Catchers, Blalock (http://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2008/10/rangers-to-shop.html)
Nothing new here, just a chance to present ideas for trade offers.
Brewers Prepare Offers For Sabathia, Sheets (http://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2008/10/brewers-prepare.html)
Should set the opening bidding on CC, and create a standard for offers to Sheets.
Odds and Ends: Jacobs, Howard, Renteria (http://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2008/10/odds-and-ends-j.html)
Random stuff, including criticizing the Jacobs-to-Royals trade, Matt Cain's trade value (not sure if anyone has a shot at him), Cptn. Crazy wanting to stay in Hockeytown, Kurjian's storylines, and a odd trade idea.

A good reminder of who are the most costly FA in terms of draft picks that we'd have to give up to get them.

Wait a minute...
I love Jason Varitek as much as the next secretly-mancrushing next guy, but a “Type A” free agent? I think that gets the Sheila Broflovski/Southpark “WhatwhatWhaaaaat?!?!”
I mean, despite loving the intangibles and all a first rounder and a sandwich pick sound awfully tasty.
Mmmm… Sandwich pick…
Rock me, sexy Jesus...

FOOD!
Yeah, I think his previous work helped him. You can’t rule out a bounceback.

Considering Alex Cora just filed for FA….
You all really want Craig Counsell in yr infield, just think of the wonderful benefits of having a utility infielder who actually knows how to field.
negatives: easily confused with Jed Lowrie’s older brother; hits worse than Tek on a bad day
positives: fielding, draws walks as easily as breathing

Hmm... I hadn't thought of him replacing Cora as the sub.
Depends if we get Tex, but Lowell might take over that role. Or Lugo.

There are so many things wrong with the idea of Lowell being a UI guy
First, he can’t play 2b or SS. Second, he’s too good for that. Third, why?

Not a complete utility guy.
More like a Casey, or a Youk, playing 1B or 3B when needed.

Lugo should be the MIU
We are paying a ton for him, and his trade value is even lower than last year. Wait until it gets higher and then work out some trade.
Well, I'll appreciate for you to keep my zingers outta your mouth!

Can he serve as a beer man in the stands?
The ones that wear yellow hats? Although, he’d probably throw the beer so hard, it would over shoot the patron, hit a poor kid in the head, and the kid would get up and look over to Lugo, and then…

No, thank you.

No thank you either
I think I really fell into the sarchasm on that post. Or everyone else did. ;)
(A lot of us have the feeling that the Brewers are trying to bring him back in a coaching capacity somewhere. In any case, I’d rather have Alex Cora too.)

Did you know that Alex Cora is the smartest man in baseball?
His fielding isn’t so good because he’s perfecting his Unified Field Theory.

That still doesn't explain why he can't hit for his life
Maybe he just sucks… :)
But he is OUR bad MI guy… Like Hoolian was OUR crappy LRP. Those guys don’t come around too often. They’re so awful, yet so lovable. :)

Cora is like Socrates.
A man too brilliant to be understood by us simple-minded fans. He is probably testing our devotion to the team with his anemic hitting, in the hopes of leading us to a better fandom. Of course, the Athenians lacked the patience of Red Sox fans…

Socrates.
Played for the Athenian No Sox. Negotiations with his club ended badly, and he was disciplined in a way that Bud Selig would approve of.
He was also a pretty mean footballer.

SoCORAtes was a pretty bad pun on my part
And the footballer was pretty mean indeed, but he was a heck of a player. Unlike our Alex. :)

"Socorates"
is pretty good. Too bad he’ll never suit up for us again…
Well, I say “too bad”, and mean “zippity doodah zippity day”.

The thing is, the utility guy shouldn’t be making 64 starts in a year. Counsell did. Cora only made 41 and that is because the entire Sox infield was various varieties of broken.
…does this mean Cora will end up a Brewer, too? (Hey, Tavarez is back on the FA market…)

Cora a Brewer?
Yovani Gallardo for Alex straight up. Whaddya say? :)

It’s always interesting to hear “Hot Stove” rumors, so thanks for the links. I especially enjoy what Tim Kurkjian has to say.

Rangers Catcher
I am fairly frustrated with the whole Texas catcher situation. They say they have 4 catchers, they are not putting Teagarden on the trading block, so that leaves 3. Laird is better then average but is about to turn 29 so it would be a short term solution. Max Ramirez and Salty both project to be above average hitters but are expected to move out of the catching position.
If Laird is our only option for an actual catcher from them, assuming that Max and Salty are both not willing or capable of playing catcher. I am only willing to give up a David Pauly type prospect.
What do you guys think?
by drabidea on Nov 3, 2008 9:02 AM EST reply actions 0 recs
I agree
The way to deal with the Rangers is to let them sit on their catcher surplus. The Sox have young pitching, everyone and their mother wants to deal with the Sox bc of the possibility of Buchholz, Bowden, Bard, etc. being available.
I am all for trading young pitching but I want something in return. In short I want Teagarden or the Sox can use an in house replacement or get a FA. I would rather have Buchholz than Laird. Yes, I said it, the “trade Buchholz” guy said “keep Buchholz hold out for Teagarden.”
If Buchholz turns out to be the guy we all hope, well, the Sox are better off with Jose Molina behind the plate and Buchholz in the rotation living up to his potential and the Rangers know that.
Pitching > catching.

If you sit too long
Someone else will swoop in. It’s a fine line to walk. Well-rounded catchers are rare.

I'd be on the phone to Cleveland
Asking Shapiro what kind of package it would take to bring back Shoppach. I think we match up well with them, they also may have some interest in Lowell, obviously more would be included going both ways.

Molina
I’m wondering why he hasn’t surfaced as a short-term option. I’m sure he’s available (Sandoval could start until Posey’sm ready), and probably wouldn’t cost a C-Buch level prospect.

Which one?
Jose, Bengie or Yadier?

Unless there’s also someone named Pablo Sandoval on the Cards or the MFY.

I know very little about the Cards.
Except that Albert Pujols is a God among men.
