Oct. 2: Links around the Nation
Let's see what everyone is saying about last night's victory:
- The buzz today is last night's effort by Jacoby Ellsbury. Tony Massarotti writes in the Globe that it's October and Jacoby is here.
- Bob Ryan explains why Jon Lester is Boston's ace right now. He wrote Lester "was protecting a one-run lead like a mother eagle guarding the nest, and he was prepared to fight."
- Adam Kilgore writes the Sox took "complete and utter control" of the series by winning game No. 1.
- More about Ellsbury's heroics at the Herald by Joseph D'Hippolito.
- Jim Donaldson from the ProJo proclaims it was a night full of heroes, not just a couple.
- ProJo's Kevin McNamara has a little bit about the pressure situation Justin Masterson faced last night in the 8th inning.
- Joy of Sox writes the play of the game had to be Kevin Youkilis gunning down Vladimir Guerrero at third base.
- Surviving Grady states the obvious: everyone loves Jon Lester.

Victorino just hit a GS off Sabathia. Second GS in 2 days.
God, I wish we could play the Brewers.

Oh
And 2 GS in 2 days by not so much powerful hitters, Victorino and Loney. Maybe there’s some hope for the Angels. Or maybe not. :)

I think the Phillies
might surprise everyone in the NL. They have some very good hitters, decent pitching and an excellent closer. Hey – sounds like our Sox!

I thought the Cubs were the most complete team in the NL, but they’re on the verge of collapse; an ignominius, 1st-round exit.

Because LA has better starting pitching
All you need is three good starters (or two really dominant ones) to win a short series.
I gotta go 'cause I'm probably definitely gonna nod out again.

The Cubs have better
I think Zambrano and Harden are better than what the Dodgers have to offer.

Apparently
not, At least not over the past month. Lowe and Billingsley were two of the hottest pitchers in baseball over the last month or two. Harden may shut ‘em down tomorrow, but overall I think right now any scout would take the Dodgers’ staff over the Cubs.

I saw that grand slam.
C C was getting squeezed on the pitches before that. He threw several on the corners that weren’t being called for strikes, and he ended up loading the bases.
Nevertheless, I’m begging to think that C C Sabathia may not be a big game pitcher. He’s a great guy to get you to the playoffs, but his performance there has been wanting. His two starts against the Red Sox were awful (10.1 IP, 12 R, 7 BB, 9 Ks), and his start against the Yankees was just okay (5 ip, 3 runs, 6 BB, 5 Ks). His best start (2001, vs. Seattle) wasn’t spectacular: 6ip, 2 runs, 5 BB and 5 k’s.

I didn't see the GS
I was on ‘class’ (my body was, at least), and I was on Gamecast. I kept asking myself ‘why the fuck did he walk the pitcher?’, didn’t know he was getting squeezed.
If he was a big game pitcher, the Sox may have never won the WS last season. And to think about how impossible it was to beat both Sabathia and Carmona in a row last season. And we did it. I just love the Sox. :)

Sabathia and Carmona were paper tigers.
They were way overused during the regular season. Sabathia ended up with 250+ innings all told last year, and Carmona had a huge innings jump from around 100 in 2006 to 215 (+the postseason) the next year.

For sure
But, come on, it was hard to feel this way when the Indians beat the MFY in the ALDS and were off to face us.

Agreed.
They looked intimidating. But at that point, we had Beckett, the Texan God of the Playoffs, on our side, so I thought we’d be okay.

Oh yeah
Beckett came up big for us last season, Schill did too. Meanwhile, Carmona and Sabathia did not. :)
It’s amazing how much stronger the Indians looked last season.

Than they looked this season
Not in comparison with the Sox.

I agree 100%
CC doesn’t seem to be a big-game picther. I think the reason is he puts too pressure on himself to completely shut down the other team at a point where he’s already thrown more than 200 innings. The guy simply can’t be superman. I think you’d see a different guy on the mound if Sheets was still in the rotation, if CC didn’t feel like he had to do it alone.

Ethier, Loney and Kemp batting in the order
I just want the Dodgers to win the NL pennant. I very much like their young players.

Try again next season.

A Phillies/Red Sox series would be dandy.
I have an obvious rooting interest in the Red Sox and a betting slip with the Phillies’ name on it.
