As a matter of fact the team that’s spanking you has been around for only ten years, and in those ten years they have won just as many division titles as your Red Sox. You must be proud. Not only that the team you are playing and who is whooping you is a better team than you have ever had in the history of your team!!! You must be proud of your flash in the pan organization.

not sure if Manny quit

He def. did some shady stuff, but nothing he hadnt done in previous years.

But Manny was Bostons best hitter before the trade, and he only missed two games in all of July, and he played in the all star game, when all of his teammates were on vacation for 3 days…

I am not defending the stunts he pulled, but the fact is the Redsox enabled him.. they never complained or stopped him from any of his other stunts…. the fact that he never ran balls out… now that they actually traded him, they act like all of this is new.

Timlin, Ortiz

i hate to say it but ortiz is playing like a man hurt. not just a bad wrist. i’m seeing Mo Vaughn up there. I think we can get a pitcher for Ellsbury (the rumor is Jacoby is a diva in the clubhouse)

by fred g on Oct 16, 2008 9:41 PM EDT up reply actions

Ortiz

Yeah Big Papi had his worst season in Boston this year. But he still slugged .507 playing hurt much of the season. That type of production is hard to come by for a guy paid $13 million a year.

keep Bay close. agreed. But DUMP Magadan

I don’t claim to know this in particular, but it just seems difficult to identify one Sox hitter that has improved under Magadan that has referenced Magadan at all.

This is not to put blame on Magadan as the starting pitchers have not shown up for 4 games. I am just thinking about the disintegration of Papi in general since papa Jack was sent packing.

I don't know what Theo knows about who is looking for new gigs.

A better bullpen and a new catcher would help the Sox a lot. Come to think of it — I’m not so sure about spending all that money on a 4th starter: Lester, Beckett and DiceK are a pretty solid top-line rotation. A lot of the money will need to get packaged with Lugo and Lowell to get some more value in return.

The future of the Red Sox is the brightest in the MLB.

Next year they will have the best farm system and they’re rich. Plus they already have a lot of young, great talent on the major league roster.

by schmosterballs92 on Oct 16, 2008 9:57 PM EDT reply actions

There's really, really no shame in losing in the ALCS to a wonderful team

Playing like crazy men. The Rays are too hot, and they’ve been too hot all season. I think a healthy Sox could have pulled this one, but it’s just too close to say.

We’re, right now, the second best team in the league. Out of 30, we’re the 2nd best.

Mother---- him and John Wayne!

by MerryGoByeBye on Oct 16, 2008 10:02 PM EDT up reply actions

The Rays are going to be great for a while

Tampa has hit every single mistake for a HR this series and has shown they are the better overall team. Upton, Longoria, Pena, Price, Shields, Kazmir, Garza, et al. are going to be around for a long time to come. The Red Sox aren’t at full strength, but that isn’t the reason they lost the series. They are losing to a team who is playing better in every facet of the game at this time.

by fred g on Oct 16, 2008 10:05 PM EDT up reply actions

This is just one series.

They may not be so hot next year.

true

Tampa is good, no debating that. But the Sox have been an embarrassment. Kazmir is getting them out tonight with AAA stuff, maybe worse. Papi and Ellsbury (and Varitek – ho hum) were waving at hittable pitches all series. This Sox team is nowhere near good enough to justify this payroll. They need a shakeup like they haven’t had since 2004 if they want to remain contenders. If Theo brings this team back as presently composed, there is a very good chance they finish in third place next year.

Seriously though. We have automatic outs playing every day

Think how pissed off the Angels must be. There cannot be any walls left in Lackey’s house.

On total, I’m happy with the season. The MFY missed the playoffs. But we are really hurt, and really old compared to this Rays team.

by fred g on Oct 16, 2008 10:13 PM EDT up reply actions

We're not old

Pedroia, Taco, Lester, Lowrie, Paps, MDC and Masterson are all young. Youk, Bay, Dice-K and Beckett aren’t old. Drew, Mikey and Papi could be around for more time. Bowden, Lars, Buch, Bard and lot’s of guys could come up in the future and produce very well for us.

The future is bright, man. We just got hurt like crazy, and had to face a great and crazy hot team.

Athleticism

The Sox are woefully unathletic compared to the Rays. That is a glaring need at this point, among many.

But so is pretty much every other team in the bigs. This is what happens when you draft within the top 5 picks every year and all of that elite talent comes together.

by fred g on Oct 16, 2008 10:24 PM EDT up reply actions

Athleticism?

The Rays are beating the Sox because they’re good, not because they’re athletic. This is not basketball.

Rays are a well built team, there are a lot of teams who sucked for a while and still do. They’re just not this better than us. It’s closer than this.

I think the Rays win

Phillies have a chance… slim

Bud Selig could have had Sox-Dodgers or Angels-Cubs. Cubs – Sox. Instead he’s got Phillies-Rays. And with those 8:30pm start times, the entire state of Florida will be asleep before first pitch. HA HA.

Players get old and don’t perform like they did in the past. Must go young and build for a plateau of greatness coming in a few more years before the entire cycle starts again. In that spirit and as only a starting point, retire or otherwise get rid of:

You belief in Wakefield must be a personal fetish or something!

I have seen enough to know he is through. Even when functional, he was too unpredictable for a championship team, and now that he throws little league caliber pitches (if that), it would be the height of stupidity (IMO) to keep him on. Totally unjustifiable!

Pre-emptive argument: please don’t argue about whether Lester or Beckett should pitch game 6. The Sox need both of them to win, and it doesn’t really matter what order they pitch. Or does somebody think Byrd should get a start?

Byrd pitched a bunch of innings in game 4.

Ideally, I’d have Masterson start one of them. But his innings are too high. Just need back-to-back good starts, plus some offense.

And, also, come on, you do not figure it out when you’re 30 and your a FB pitcher. In nearly all of his seasons in the minors he had a high ERA, never done jack shit in the MLB until this season. He’s good, but he’s not wonderful.
