What the hell was that?

That’s what I’m guessing from your blog memberships. It must feel good to watch the top two teams in the AL East duke it out. You know, the Red Sox and the Rays? I’ll forgive your comment, given the psychological damage of watching a 3rd place team.

No Dynasty
As a matter of fact the team that’s spanking you has been around for only ten years, and in those ten years they have won just as many division titles as your Red Sox. You must be proud. Not only that the team you are playing and who is whooping you is a better team than you have ever had in the history of your team!!! You must be proud of your flash in the pan organization.

not sure if Manny quit
He def. did some shady stuff, but nothing he hadnt done in previous years.
But Manny was Bostons best hitter before the trade, and he only missed two games in all of July, and he played in the all star game, when all of his teammates were on vacation for 3 days…
I am not defending the stunts he pulled, but the fact is the Redsox enabled him.. they never complained or stopped him from any of his other stunts…. the fact that he never ran balls out… now that they actually traded him, they act like all of this is new.
Check out my baseball analysis blog FANalytics
Timlin, Ortiz
i hate to say it but ortiz is playing like a man hurt. not just a bad wrist. i’m seeing Mo Vaughn up there. I think we can get a pitcher for Ellsbury (the rumor is Jacoby is a diva in the clubhouse)
Ortiz
Yeah Big Papi had his worst season in Boston this year. But he still slugged .507 playing hurt much of the season. That type of production is hard to come by for a guy paid $13 million a year.
by Gnick on Oct 16, 2008 9:43 PM EDT up reply actions
Lowell is going to keep getting hurt.
I agree with your move. Teixeira would have a hard time in Boston’s media because he’s just so dumb. But he’s a hell of a player.
Jason Bay
is a MONSTER. Was an MVP candidate a few years ago, and soesn’t get enough repect around New England. He should be protecting Papi
keep Bay close. agreed. But DUMP Magadan
I don’t claim to know this in particular, but it just seems difficult to identify one Sox hitter that has improved under Magadan that has referenced Magadan at all.
This is not to put blame on Magadan as the starting pitchers have not shown up for 4 games. I am just thinking about the disintegration of Papi in general since papa Jack was sent packing.
& had they kept Tavraez
maybe Manny would be here, etc…times change, people move on
"You know," Girardi said, shrugging his shoulders, "it didn't work."

Listen
Youk is a great player, having his best year. Bay has had 3 or 4 years like that under his belt. Now he’s in a hitters park. Bay can bat 320 and hit 40 home runs. he has that potential and has nearly done it.
yep keep those 2
Timlin out
Wakefield out
Teixeira or M. Cabrera in.
Sabathia in.
Buchholz traded for catching.
Varitek out.
Trade Ellsbury and Lowell to free up room
I say pass on Sabathia
trade lowell? for what & to whom?
"You know," Girardi said, shrugging his shoulders, "it didn't work."
( Joe Girardi on pitching to Manny Ramirez with first base open)
I think he's a jerk but we need him
Given the starting pitching on display this series, they need him. He’s a effing horse. Imagine how good he’d be if he wasn’t pitched every 3rd day all the time.
Too many innings, too much wear.
Pass on Sabathia.

& hope the Sox dont even look his way
"You know," Girardi said, shrugging his shoulders, "it didn't work."
( Joe Girardi on pitching to Manny Ramirez with first base open)
maybe. but what?! we need arms
Lugo and Lowell need to be looked at as tax deductions. Nobody is gonna take Lowell’s contract.
I think we need proven arms and trade Buchholz for Catching.
the Sox need some bullpen help
catching, & 4th/5th starters & a big bat…so in short – they do need A LOT—but how & who? no eye deer
I trust Tito ( totally HEART tito) & the front office to do what needs to be done
"You know," Girardi said, shrugging his shoulders, "it didn't work."
( Joe Girardi on pitching to Manny Ramirez with first base open)
I don't know what Theo knows about who is looking for new gigs.
A better bullpen and a new catcher would help the Sox a lot. Come to think of it — I’m not so sure about spending all that money on a 4th starter: Lester, Beckett and DiceK are a pretty solid top-line rotation. A lot of the money will need to get packaged with Lugo and Lowell to get some more value in return.
LL
dont make statements like that about Bay not getting X or Y …not true & you know it….

There's really, really no shame in losing in the ALCS to a wonderful team
Playing like crazy men. The Rays are too hot, and they’ve been too hot all season. I think a healthy Sox could have pulled this one, but it’s just too close to say.
We’re, right now, the second best team in the league. Out of 30, we’re the 2nd best.

The Rays are going to be great for a while
Tampa has hit every single mistake for a HR this series and has shown they are the better overall team. Upton, Longoria, Pena, Price, Shields, Kazmir, Garza, et al. are going to be around for a long time to come. The Red Sox aren’t at full strength, but that isn’t the reason they lost the series. They are losing to a team who is playing better in every facet of the game at this time.
This is just one series.
They may not be so hot next year.
"It's just a tiny little nick, but it hurts when I get champagne in there."
- Jason Bay, on getting spiked scoring the winning run in ALDS Game Four.
true
Tampa is good, no debating that. But the Sox have been an embarrassment. Kazmir is getting them out tonight with AAA stuff, maybe worse. Papi and Ellsbury (and Varitek – ho hum) were waving at hittable pitches all series. This Sox team is nowhere near good enough to justify this payroll. They need a shakeup like they haven’t had since 2004 if they want to remain contenders. If Theo brings this team back as presently composed, there is a very good chance they finish in third place next year.
Two great teams that likely are going to be great for a really long time
It’s too close to tell, really. The Rays are not this better than us, both are wonderful teams.

Seriously though. We have automatic outs playing every day
Think how pissed off the Angels must be. There cannot be any walls left in Lackey’s house.
On total, I’m happy with the season. The MFY missed the playoffs. But we are really hurt, and really old compared to this Rays team.
We're not old
Pedroia, Taco, Lester, Lowrie, Paps, MDC and Masterson are all young. Youk, Bay, Dice-K and Beckett aren’t old. Drew, Mikey and Papi could be around for more time. Bowden, Lars, Buch, Bard and lot’s of guys could come up in the future and produce very well for us.
The future is bright, man. We just got hurt like crazy, and had to face a great and crazy hot team.

Athleticism
The Sox are woefully unathletic compared to the Rays. That is a glaring need at this point, among many.
But so is pretty much every other team in the bigs. This is what happens when you draft within the top 5 picks every year and all of that elite talent comes together.
Athleticism?
The Rays are beating the Sox because they’re good, not because they’re athletic. This is not basketball.
Rays are a well built team, there are a lot of teams who sucked for a while and still do. They’re just not this better than us. It’s closer than this.

I think the Rays win
Phillies have a chance… slim
Bud Selig could have had Sox-Dodgers or Angels-Cubs. Cubs – Sox. Instead he’s got Phillies-Rays. And with those 8:30pm start times, the entire state of Florida will be asleep before first pitch. HA HA.
He wanted Manny vs. Red Sox

Varitek looks like the good natured little leaguer that is just glad he’s playing. Swing and miss, run back to the dugout.

You belief in Wakefield must be a personal fetish or something!
I have seen enough to know he is through. Even when functional, he was too unpredictable for a championship team, and now that he throws little league caliber pitches (if that), it would be the height of stupidity (IMO) to keep him on. Totally unjustifiable!
He's cheap and league average
He does not need to start a post-season game, we just need a 4th starter.

if this continues, who objects to Paul Byrd on Sunday?

I don’t want to see Becks pitching again this season.

Really?
Beck isn’t the guy I want out there, but Paul Byrd sure as hell isn’t.

Caray was getting all set to fellate Longoria and then he threw it away.
These TBS guys are terrible
I’m watching gameday, how close did he throw?
"We're not going to give up," It doesn't happen, so who cares? There's always next year. It's not like it's the end of the world."
He threw it at JD's head
But I’m not really sure about that pitch.

I wanna replay of Howell's pitch
Did he throw it at JD head, or did he throw it to the ump? I’m not sure…

JD Drew. Greatest postseason hitter ever.

Wow
I feel like my dog just got run over.
Congrats guys
wow
I really had absolutely no hope left when the Rays went up 7-0. How could the Sox come back against that bullpen?
Wow.
Pre-emptive argument: please don’t argue about whether Lester or Beckett should pitch game 6. The Sox need both of them to win, and it doesn’t really matter what order they pitch. Or does somebody think Byrd should get a start?
Byrd pitched a bunch of innings in game 4.
Ideally, I’d have Masterson start one of them. But his innings are too high. Just need back-to-back good starts, plus some offense.

Beckett is the key
They have to see if he’s good to start game 6. If he’s not, we’ll see who gets the ball. Lester is still my choice for game 7.

either way is good for me..
like RickD said, they both have to pitch much better for us to win.

Sure thing, man
I can’t even think of a comeback right now, I can’t really think about anything right now. If you told me that Paps would start game 6, I’d agree with it. :)

Balfour just turned into a pumpkin.
Is this some sort of cosmic revenge for leaving Percival off the playoff roster? Or just Percival’s own revenge by his staying home and not lending moral support to the ’pen?
Balfour is good, but not great
And, also, come on, you do not figure it out when you’re 30 and your a FB pitcher. In nearly all of his seasons in the minors he had a high ERA, never done jack shit in the MLB until this season. He’s good, but he’s not wonderful.
