ALCS Game 3: TB @ BOS.

Tampa Bay Rays at Boston Red Sox, Oct 13, 2008 4:37 PM EDT

Lester takes the mound vs. Garza, hopefully to get us back a series lead.

W-L ERA WHIP K BB
2008 - Matt Garza 11-9 3.70 1.24 128 59

v.

W-L ERA WHIP K BB
2008 - Jon Lester 16-6 3.21 1.28 152 66

Lineups:

Cora in at SS? Ells still at leadoff? Not sure, ladies and gents. Not sure. Cora has a .000 OPS vs. Matt Garza in the span of one game. Lowrie, the same, though I've got a heckuva lot more faith in Lowrie's hitting abilities. Still like Kotsay at 1b for defense.

This is what I would like!

Casey at first for his bat. Kotsay is too weak a hitter.

Lowrie at short for his hitting potentail over Cora, although I am not sure he is that much better.

Ellsbury in the field of now, but he has to show some momentum generation and soon!

Anyone, absolutely anyone hitting instead of Varitek. Much too big a hole in the hitting with that one!

Varitek, Kotsay and Cora back to back in the lineup may just be toooo big a momentum sucking hole to overcome, so yes I am very concerned by this!

I do not hate anyone.

I just am not nostalgic for the old days so to speak and do not cheer for mediocrity on this team!. When a player at this level is washed up or consistently performing poorly, I say so. Varitek is washed up and is and has been badly, badly hurting this team. If you fail to acknowledge this, you are not dealing with reality IMO!

by NG on Oct 13, 2008 5:27 PM EDT up reply actions

I agree

I’ve always liked Veritek, but he’s been brutal and getting worse the past two seasons. The worst thing is seeing him at the plate with runners in scoring position and killing potential big innings with strikeouts, time after time. It’s sad to see.

Shameful, bottom of the 2nd.

Just shameful. Cora doing exactly what ‘Tek should’ve done, but already 2 outs.

F’ers. And them referencing Tek’s catching abilities, literally, after him not catching a ball led to the first run. HorseS.

Chip Carey

was rooting bigtime for the Angels and now he is doing it with Tampa Bay. I don’t know what his problem is with the Red Sox, but you are correct. His bias is pretty obvious.

by ccthemovieman on Oct 13, 2008 5:32 PM EDT up reply actions

Sorry folks

I’m as big a Red Sox fan as you will meet… but there is one thing that all networks do NOT want is the Red Sox eliminated.

If they are rooting for anyone its the Red Sox because they have so many transplanted fans (like yours truly) all across the country and people tune in to see them.

If Tampa Bay wins the pennant you will see executives of both TBS and especially FOX jumping out of a window.

We think it is cheering when the announcer does things like “sound excited” and “not sound depressed like Joe Castigleone” when something positive happens to the Red Sox

Basically when you leave the Boston area, everyone accuses the announcers of being FOR the Red Sox. I live near LA and I heard Angels fans left and right calling up the radio stations saying “Why didn’t the TBS announcers just wear Red Sox hats and wave pom poms for Boston?”

by SullyBaseball on Oct 13, 2008 5:39 PM EDT up reply actions

My comments were based on

Carey admitteing it on the air that last game. He wanted the series to go five games because, as it put it, “a winner-take-all game between the team with the best record in baseball and defending champs would be great to see.” He was noticeably excited and much louder when the Angels scored twice in the eight to tie the game.

BTW, I don’t live in NE, either. I’m just reporting what Carey said. I don’t see any problems with the Martinez and Darling. They are more objective.

The main thing I don't like

is how people like to make arrogant statements like “such and such don’t deserve good things because I said so.”

St. Pete has had a team for a decade, and it has been awful the entire time. Give the Rays the same success the Red Sox have had and the fans will come. In fact, they have been coming, more this year than before. And this playoff run will sell more season tickets, and the numbers will rise next year. Will they then be “deserving” of a title? People came to hockey, they came to football, but in any market – not just Tampa Bay – it takes success to create a fanbase. Unless you’re the Cubs.

by TBRays on Oct 13, 2008 5:44 PM EDT up reply actions

Stupid argument

If this current team sticks around, they can build a base and build history. No one is gonna root for the Rays just because they occupy a building down the street – there has to be a likable product, be it a winning team, good team chemistry, whatever.

If you build the future around the Rays team that you see today, they will come.

by PhilR8 on Oct 13, 2008 5:46 PM EDT up reply actions

If the Mariners

If the Mariners could develop a fan base (and they had more losing seasons before their first division title than the Rays) then ANY team can!

No mementum really hurts!

Momentum is contagious. Generate it, and the pitcher and most hitters benefit greatly. The problem with Lester tonight, IMO, is that he is mentally down due to no offensive potential. He knows this, and it just puts him in an almost impossible position having to virtually carry this team by himself. I blame this momentum void on a combination of unfortunate injuries, but also on possible managerial misconduct/misjudgment in playing very weak hitters instead on benching them in favor of others. Maybe there just are not enough good hitters left on the team, but if so, do not look for much momentum to repeat 2004 or 2007!

by NG on Oct 13, 2008 6:37 PM EDT reply actions

Really is irrelevant because

if Lester loses and Beckett is hurting, there is not enough ptiching to win, nevermind no hitting!. This may well be a bad turning point in this season for the Sox as the momentum seems to have gone over totally to the Rays.

To NG: speaking of the lineup

For ‘09 and beyond,…….. I like Ellsbury, Pedroia, Drew, Bay, Youk and Lowrie. That’s six out of the nine in the starting lineup. I wonder about Lowell and Ortiz losing effectiveness while Veritek’s situation is dire. Lowell still should produce, once he’s healthy but he’s getting up in age. If Oritz has another .250 year next season, he should be gone by 2010. As for pitching, we’re in decent shape but unless Beckett continues to have physical problems. Another big FA wouldn’t hurt!

To Sully: I like your optimism!! Keep it up. We need to hear it!

Too many injuries this year resulting in

too few effective pitchers (along with an aging Wakefield). In 2004 and 2007, we did not have such devastating injuries so we were actually deeper with both hitters and pitchers. I think it would be almost a miracle to repeat those feats this year, but I hope they can!!

I feel heavy stress when the Sox can win but do not perform well!

I now feel much less stress because I think this team can not achieve their objective of repeating as WS champs. They do not now have the talent to do it! Too many injuries resulting in not enough pitching and not enough timely hitting.

I suppose I can now become like the die-hard fan types, and make believe all is well. Go sox!
