Thoughts? It seems like Ross is on the roster because they are worried about needing to pinch-hit for Varitek, leaving just Cash to catch.

If If If If If
Lowell, and Drew and maybe even Ortiz can show some semblance of health, this is a winning lineup with only one momentum sucker in the hitting rotation (Guess who?). Keep appearances by Byrd and especially Wakefield to a minimum, and we can win this! Again, if the above 3 hitters are somewhat able to function!

Worried about PH for Varitek?
I’m thrilled about the now possibility of PHing for Varitek. :)

He is such a momentum killer.
Also, look at his legs.

Maybe he should try kicking the ball?

Some note from the Globe's Tony Masserotti
The Sox seem more concerned about the health of Lowell than that of Drew, which leaves open the possibility that Youkilis may need to move to third at some point. If that happens, look for Kotsay to play first base as he is the better defender. Lowell’s health remains one of the great variables in this series, even if he can only play five innings a night.
By carrying a third catcher, the Sox suggest that they will hit for Varitek if and when the situation calls for it. Francona has refrained from doing so during the regular season, but the postseason is obviously a different matter. If necessary, the Sox could subsequently hit for Cash and put in Ross, who is regarded as a solid defensive catcher.
“You put the roster in best position where [it] can succeed,” Francona told WEEI. “You have to consider, ‘Does a third catcher allow you to pinch run, to pinch hit?’ It puts you in a position to maximize your roster.”
Again, credit due to Tony Masserotti for the summary. Read the whole article here.

Weird to read “Globe’s Tony Massaroti”…
Anyway, Tito is right. I wonder if ‘Tek is sore over this? I assume he wouldn’t be, but it’s obvious that he has been one of the worst offensive catchers in baseball this season.

How can he be?
‘Tek has been miserable at the plate this year, as you note. He must realize that, even if he doesn’t like his contribution minimized. The Red Sox will still lean heavily on his knowledge of opposing pitchers and game-calling ability.

I’m pretty fired up for this one. You guys mind if I join the bandwagon for the playoffs since my Tigers… well… had an “unfortunate” season?

Welcome aboard.
Sorry about your Tigers. When they got Miggy I thought for sure they’d be in the playoffs.

They were clearly a playoff caliber team if it wasn’t for the bullpen. Do you know that if Detroit won half of the games they were tied or in the lead going into the seventh inning, then we would be in the playoffs right now with an AL Central championship? That’s a legitimate stat too. We have to adress that problem in the offseason along with finding an everyday SS and potentially a hitting catcher amongst other things, but our core players (Granderson, Polanco, Cabrera, Guillen, Ordonez) are all pieces to the puzzle, and if upper management gets the job done in the offseason, we’ll be in the mix next year.
Until then, I’m going for my number two team in the AL. I like how Francona runs his team (I wish the Tigers had a more SABR type guy who actually can be agressive on the base paths), I like the Pedroia and Ellsbury tandem, I like the 3-4 of Youk and Papi, and I REALLY like Jason Bay, going back to his time in Pittsburgh. Josh Beckett is my idol, and the reason why I wear 19 on my high school team. Hopefully Jon can get it done tonight.

Tony
What are your thoughts on what Jeremy Bonderman might be able to contribute next season?
Completely unsolicited, I think Verlander will jump back to being a top 10-15 starter in the AL, Galarraga will take a small step back, and counting on anything productive from Nate Robertson or Dontrelle Willis would be silly. Zach Miner will probably be a decent fit at the 4 or 5 slot. Are you guys going to be players on the SP market?

Dearborn, in fact, which is just a bit more than a stone's throw away.
Though I think he might end up pricing himself out with a good postseason. Unless the Tigers can shed SOME payroll, I don’t see them being big spenders. I don’t think Illitch will make them make huge cuts, mainly because the Sheffield, Robertson, Willis, and Inge contracts are all different kinds of immovable, but I don’t think he’s going to authorize them adding a bunch of payroll either.

Interesting Olney piece today
suggesting that Peavy, Grienke, and Cain will all be on the trade market this off-season.

Bonderman is very solid when he is on (he started the 2007 season 10-1 or something), but he needs to be able to get out of the first inning. That was his achilles heel. With Chuck Hernadez, our pitching coach, now fired though, we’ll see what the new guys we bring in for that position can do. Count on Jeremy as a number two / three starter next year.
As for starters, on one hand, I think Dombrowski could pull a big name starter out of thin air similar to how he aquired Cabrera, Willis or Renteria, but on the other, we have a bunch of guys (Robertson, Willis, Miner, Lambert, Garcia, and Rogers if he dosen’t retire) in the hunt for a spot with only three for sure in next years rotation (Verlander, Bonderman, Gallaraga). Derek Lowe would be nice. A veteran guy who can be a leader if Rogers leaves, but if Kenny returns next year, then there just isn’t room. Jake Peavy would be awesome as well. Another big name guy who seems more unrealistic than he actually is…
