Clement signs with Cardinals

Adios, Matt Clement. The St. Louis Cardinals signed the oft-injured starter today to a one-year contract with an option for 2009:

"Matt is a very talented pitcher who has been beset by injury the last few years," said Cardinals vice president/GM John Mozeliak. "Based on our findings from his rehabilitation last season and his recent physical, we feel that he can be a solid addition to our starting rotation and should have no limitations upon reporting to spring training."

Oh, how things looked so bright when we signed Clement. Now? Not. Good luck, Matt. I feel like we hardly knew you. But I don't think we'll ever forget that unfortunate day when you fielded that liner off of your head. I hope you can rebound.

Re: Clement signs with Cardinals
Hey more power to M. Clement if he has a good year in 08.  I am not a negative person, so best of luck, but come on, why did the Sox ever sign this guy.

Ok, that was negative, but...he was not the guy they thought they signed.  Clement is maybe, on a good day, uninjured, a 4th or 5th starter in the AL.

Again, good luck brau, but I am much happier with the Dice-k san, or Lester or Timmy Wake or Schill than this guy.

This deal makes a lot of sense, the Cards have horrible starting pitching, outside of a healthy Carpenter and the Sox need to dump some salary to sign someone who can give them innings.

4th or 5th starter?? He made it to the All-Star Game? He started out the 2005 season with a 10-2 record, then he had the accident.

Re: Clement signs with Cardinals
yeah, I said it 4th or 5th starter in an AL rotation.  Ok, that was too harsh, he could be a 3rd maybe on Texas or KC.

Pick a contender in the AL and see where he fits.  Not the Angels, or the Yankees, Indians, Detroit, Boston, Minnesota...not Toronto or TB.

Maybe Baltimore.  Good luck to the guy.

Good luck, Matt. I always kind of liked the guy.
Bottom 9th B:1 S:0 O:0 With Bill Mueller batting, Dave Roberts steals (1) 2nd base.

Re: Clement signs with Cardinals
I had mixed feeling with Clement and in the end I think it's the same as it was with Pena, I think under the right circustances and with time he can shine, but I don't want the Sox to be the one to cultivate that. We just won the WS and are looking to improve to see if we can't get a dynasty started, we don't need a project at the major league level taking up money and a roster spot (especially at SP where he might eventually return to his pre-injury, pre-allstar performance, but we also have minor leaguers that in the same timeframe might develop into a just-as-successful SP)

So, best of luck Clement. I actually hope he succeeds as it will prove my intutions that he does infact have the "stuff" and it will prove that if not for injury, he could have justified his contract.

I didn't know the Vatican had a baseball team. I hope Clement's Latin is good.

When I read this, I got a mental picture of a bunch of "cardinals" in robes playing baseball.  Made me laugh.
