Nick Swisher traded to White Sox

In some big, non-Sox/non-Santana news, the Oakland Athletics traded outfielder Nick Swisher to the White Sox for left-handed pitcher Gio Gonzalez, right-handed pitcher Fautino De Los Santos and outfielder Ryan Sweeney.

Some AN faithful aren't very happy. Some are.

I couldn't imagine following a team like this, where a star couldn't be traded in a minute just to save some cap room. The A's seem to be building down, but they've got to be back up at some point, right?

In his Boston.com chat, Gammons said that he saw the A's as a fit for Coco.

Coco for some of the parts newly snagged from the White Sox? Gio plus?

Texas was the other team mentioned.

Bottom 9th B:1 S:0 O:0 With Bill Mueller batting, Dave Roberts steals (1) 2nd base.

Re: Nick Swisher traded to White Sox
I don't understand why Chicago did this. Their farm system is shallow, and Gonzalez is one of their few pitchers with much potential. In fact, John Sickels ranked him #1, Faustino #2, and Sweeney #5, saying that the trade guts the system.

On the other hand, none of those prospects are higher than B+, so there's the possibility that none of them make it in the A's organization.

Re: Nick Swisher traded to White Sox
The White Sox have the worst of both worlds last season, crappy starting pitching combine with anemic OPS.   They feel pretty desperate in getting men on base so Thome and Konerko can hit them in.  The White Sox hit plenty of Home Runs, they just didn't have many homers with men on base.

Personally they should had dealt Contreas to a National League team for a couple good prospects, I think Contreas is still a dangerous pitcher if when he is mentally sharp.

Re: Nick Swisher traded to White Sox
The lack of a trade of Contreras suggests to me that other teams aren't interested in him. Either that or Kenny Williams thinks he'll improve and be worth more at the trade deadline.

Re: Nick Swisher traded to White Sox
This is a theft for the A's. Your #1,#2, and #5 prospect for Nick Swisher?  Ok, I guess... Lets face it, the owner of the A's uses the Marlin school of winning, hit, dump then rebuild.

Added to the Haren deal, the A's have a very large group of top young talent and I am betting they are not done yet.

Blanton and Street are probably next and the A's are gunning for 3-5 years down the line.

Re: Nick Swisher traded to White Sox
Street would be nice in the bullpen. Obviously I'm being greedy, though. Street will close wherever he's traded, but he's a great young talent.

Do the Indians realize whats going on in the Central? They have spare parts in RF,LF,and 3B....why aren't they making moves.

Re: Nick Swisher traded to White Sox
Could easily see the Clevelands getting in on Huston Street, possibly aggressively. Gutierrez should be good in LF, and there's worse things they could do than just leave Casey Blake at 3B.

Re: Nick Swisher traded to White Sox
Don't know why I said LF. RF, I would think, given his arm and where most of his PT occurred in the bigs last season.
