Pros and cons of santana

WE all Know that that santana would make the sox more successful but is he worth it? He is around 30 years old and would make us give up two valuable players. There are 2 trades that i am really concerned with. First is the Ellsbury trade, if he stays he could replace coco for cf. CocO has a great name but an average ability. Ellsbury is fantastic in only the the half season he played. Next is the Lester trade. He may have had a rocky start at first but how would you do after cancer. He pwned the Rockies and won his first ring how about that. JUst think is SAntana a guy who is slowing down with maybe 10 more years left worth guys who have a whole carreer aheaf of them who are just getting started.

Re: Pros and cons of santana
The best pitcher in baseball for seven years v. 2 prospects with very little to base a reliable projection...

Yes, I believe Santana is worth it.  He is the closest thing to Pedro around currently.

Remember this guy is 29, has won 2 Cys, has three ++ pitches, does not throw a single pitch that puts stress on his elbow and has an incredible work ethic.  Plus, he owns the Yankees.

The Yankees are going to keep Hughes, Jaba, Wang and there are reports they are making a play for Yu Darvish who arguably could be the most dominant Japanese pitcher in history.  Look him up.

Santana would trump anything the Yankees could do in the future and a rotation of Beckett, Dice-K, Santana, Buchholz and whomever would be the best that baseball has ever seen.

Ellsbury is not a guarantee, Lester is not either.  Santana will win 18+ in a Sox uniform and remember we will keep one of these guys.

Yes, he is worth it. Is he worth both Lester and Ellsbury?  Maybe.  Depends on who he would go too.  To keep him away from either NY team, Yes, I think he is worth both.

Re: Pros and cons of santana
Although I approve of both of the packages being offered to Minnesota, it isn't quite as good as you make it sound to be SoxAcumen.

Ellsbury is an electrifying talent who could be on par with Ichiro or Jose Reyes. Lester probably lacks the ability to be an absolute ace but could easily be a great No. 2 for years to come. Lowrie will probably be better than Lugo from 2009 on and it wouldn't be suprising to see the Sox get rid of Lugo after another sub .250 season.

There is no certainty that Santana will not blow his arm out this year, he has pitched a lot of innings in the last few years and you never know...

Also there is next to know way Yu Darvish will be posted until at least three years from now so we don't need to worry about that yet.

Re: Pros and cons of santana
While I appreciate your opinions, are you really trying to argue that Ellsbury is a better gamble for the future than Johan Santana?

Santana has never had serious arm trouble, his stats speak for themselves and he plays in Minnesota with little run support.

Ellsbury is what 21? and while I love the guy he is no way projectable as Ichiro or Jose Reyes right now.  If that were the case the Sox would never trade him.  He could be Coco Crisp or even a lower talented player in MLB.

Listen I get it, everyone loves Jacoby, I do too.  But, once in a life time players only become available once in a lifetime.  Everyone balked at Pedro when the Sox gave up top talent for him to Montreal.  People said we gave up too much for Beckett.  Would anyone not make either move now?

Prospects are prospects, Cy Youngs are different.  Johan is that dominate, you do not turn down Johan Santana if he becomes available, especially when there are no other "legitimate" suitors and you are really just 1 starter and maybe a middle relief pitcher and back up catcher away from taking 4 out of the next 5 World Series.

As for Yu, Nippon is trying to get paid, and they will get paid.  If Yu's statements about not playing in the US are false, Nippon stands to make upwards of $100 million for posting him early.  The Yankees are desperate now, and if Johan signs with the Sox, they will pay $100 million to keep him away from LA or Boston.

Re: Pros and cons of santana
Santana would be worth it only if we could keep either Lester or Ellsbury. I really like the Lester/Crisp/Lowrie/Masterson deal, it refrains from giving up top talent, opens CF up wide for Jacoby, and replaces a #3 Lester for a bona fide ace (or in our case #2). Masterson IMO is over rated, and not as valuable as Lester.

I really don't want Crisp in CF, so would prefer not to give up Ellsbury.

Re: Pros and cons of santana
Im fine with the Crisp/Lester/Lowrie/Masterson deal, just don't send Ellsbury.

Re: Pros and cons of santana
It just seems like the best deal for both of us. The Twins fill up their roster with quality starters and add some depth, we become a historic pitching club.

Re: Pros and cons of santana
Actually, now that I look at it, it's a GREAT deal for both of us. All of those players we offer are expendable, but invaluable to the Twins. It would fill EVERY last one of their needs. Except bull pen, and maybe we could throw in Hansen or a low level reliever (Corey, Breslow, etc.)

Re: Pros and cons of santana
I used to think that in no way should we trade Ellsbury. however, I have considered that if he goes in a package then our 2009 starting rotation is

Beckett
santana
dice-k
lester
buchholz

crisp is a great defender , has speed and hits .280, we can live with that. plus the fact that lester and buchholz are 4 and 5 takes alot of pressure off them and that is huge for young guys.

the difference between a yankee stadium hot dog and a fenway frank is that they dont sell yankee dogs in november anymore.

Re: Pros and cons of santana
Yeah, I know most Ellsbury people will balk at this, but I agree that rotation is second to none and Coco is just fine in CF for me.

I would rather keep the arms than a CF prospect.
