A&B: Beckett gets his 18th win
I gotta go 'cause I'm probably definitely gonna nod out again.

Re: Open Thread: 9.9.07 @ Baltimore
Two long balls off Beckett have tied the game at 2, as the Sox failed to bring in any runs after back to back walks in the top of the 6th. Coco couldn't get a sac bunt down and ended up forcing a runner at third. Josh is at 88 pitches through 5.1

Having Coco bunt
Was an awful call there.  Crisp is a better righty hitter. Cora, who was the next hitter, is probably the worst bat on the team.  And, Ellsbury hasn't shown he can hit left-handed pitching yet.  I would have had Coco swinging away in that situation.

Re: Open Thread: 9.9.07 @ Baltimore
Josh hasn't walked anyone and struck out 7 through 6, but the high pitch count and two homers aren't going to help him overshadow Sabathia in the Cy Young race.

Re: Open Thread: 9.9.07 @ Baltimore
Josh is back out for the seventh. Hope he can get through this quickly and the bats can make some noise for him in the eighth to grab a win.

Re: Open Thread: 9.9.07 @ Baltimore
And he hits the first batter he faces on the first pitch he throws. This does not bode well.

Sac bunt moves pinch runner Brandon Fahey to second as Millar pinch hits.

Millar grounds out. Man on third, two gone.

Re: Open Thread: 9.9.07 @ Baltimore
Beckett Ks Roberts to end the inning on his 116th pitch and the 10th pitch of the at bat. Josh had problems retiring people all night after getting ahead, but let's go Sox!

Coco Clutch!
With an RBI single, Coco brought Drew in from third with two outs!

RBI single for Coco
Sox lead 3-2.  Now, Beckett can get a win.
I gotta go 'cause I'm probably definitely gonna nod out again.

Re: RBI single for Coco
Which will help in the Cy Young race.

I wasn't a believer at the break, but he's the best pitcher in the AL right now, and the other favorites haven't stepped up the same way. Blisters gets my vote right now.

Re: RBI single for Coco
Sabathia (17-7 3.15 ERA 1.14 WHIP) has been great.  He has gone 8 innings or better in 4 of his last 5 starts.
I gotta go 'cause I'm probably definitely gonna nod out again.

Another run or two would be nice ...

Re: Another run or two would be nice ...
At this point, I'd rather have no more runs in the game.

Of course, it's the bottom of the ninth and we're up 1...

Oki got a nice 1-2-3 inning in his first appearance in a few days.

On to the ninth, here comes Paps, who has been absolutely dominant of late.

Scott Moore is pinch hitting for Fahey. Moore, of the grand slam off Dice-K.

Re: Open Thread: 9.9.07 @ Baltimore
Bynum's strikeout makes lefties 0 for their last 33 against Paps as the game ends. Beckett picks up his MLB-leading 18th win, Paps gets his 35th save, hold for Oki. Beckett's ERA dropped 3 hundredths of a point after a gutsy 7 innings.

Re: Magic Number: 14
And although Dice-K's start yesterday was very disappointing, you have to be happy with taking 3 of 4 from the Orioles.

3 of 4 is pretty much all you can ask for
But Dice-K is worrying me.  He has to turn it around soon.

Re: 3 of 4 is pretty much all you can ask for
I think it's probably worth sacrificing the game he's supposed to start against the MFY by having Hatchet Face start instead. Maybe a little extra rest is what he needs.

Re: 3 of 4 is pretty much all you can ask for
They won't do it, but that might be a good idea.  They should give him extra rest in the last few weeks of the season.

Re: 3 of 4 is pretty much all you can ask for
At this point, I'd even be happy with a six-man rotation for the rest of the regular season. Becks, Schilling, Matsuzaka, Wake, Lester, and Hatchet Face (and he only because you don't want to overuse Buchholz)? We'd have a shot to win five games out of six, and the starters would be better rested going to the playoffs.

Re: 3 of 4 is pretty much all you can ask for
Me too. Though I'd give Buchholz one more start, and Masterson one too.
Just my two cents. Keep the change.
