The Cashman

While reading an ESPN chat, I came across an interesting interview with Brian Cashman.

Of particular interest, to me at least -

Interviewer - And if Alex opts out, the Yanks will not pursue him?

Cashman - If he opts out, we won't pursue him. It's basically economics. Any discussions will have to be prior to opting out. If he opts out, we will have to go in a different direction.

Hmmmm....

The whole article is a good read, for those of you interested in knowing thine enemy.

Re: The Cashman
they will re-sign him before he opts out. somehow they will find a way to get the $$$ Texas is on th ehook for and just extend him.

Re: The Cashman
I think he opts out. I saw this mentioned elsewhere that this is yet another prime opportunity to set the market on a player like this (who really has no peers, but anyway).

And the "we won't negotiate if he opts out" is just posturing in my opinion.

Re: The Cashman
I agree that it's just posturing.

And I agree that this is a great opportunity to set a new bar on the market. That said, the Yanks can do so with an extension, and still manage to save $30 million over the next three years.

Just my two cents. Keep the change.

Re: The Cashman
The Yankees can do so, but getting an extension from them while still under contract really does nothing for the rest of Boras's current (and future) clients.

Re: The Cashman
An extension could work better for Boras' future clients even better than a new contract, because in order to equal the overall value of a new deal, the end of the contract would be at a much higher yearly price.

Hypothetically, if Boras demands an average of $32 over 7 years (a raise of 5 million over the current deal, totaling $224), the Yanks would have to give a four year extension at 36 million to equal the value (and with the Rangers' continued contribution, they'd be paying a total of "only" $195). Then when Miguel Cabrera or Hanley or the Uptons or whoever hits free agency in 2011-12ish, Boras can point to Arod's $36 per as the bar.

Just my two cents. Keep the change.

I'm taking that argument over to PA. Thanks! (I'll give you a shout out.)

Interesting
There's been a long thread on the same article over in Pinstripe Alley. You guys are less jaundiced about the Yankees' resigning A-Rod than the Yankee fans.

Actually, I think we've got a couple of 'glass-is-half-empty' types over there that make some of your gloom-and-doom guys look like Mary Poppins.

Re: The Cashman
We all know A-Rod won't opt out. Anyone who thinks that Scott Boras is going to take the best player in baseball (having his best season) straight into a bidding war is a moron. He'd much rather sign an extension that benefits the Yankees more than himself. Besides, he likes the intangibles in NYC, like being booed by fans, or not being stood up for by his teammates, or being booed at events like the US Open.

You guys
made an over-the-top bid for Dice-K's bidding rights. The Yankees will make the same sort of pre-emptive strike for A-Rod, knowing that we've got $30M extra (the Texas money will still come in w/ an extension) to play with. He's not going to opt out.

Nice to have a reasonable Yankee fan around to offer a counter-perspective without a flame-war.

Re: The Cashman
They are going to extend him, no way he opts out.

Re: The Cashman
I tend to think the Boras pushes for him to opt out, it's been said other places that he likes to break down loyalty between who he represents and their teams because it puts in place presidence for future players to opt out and begin a bidding war between teams that both drives up the current price and drives up the market as a whole because he can point to past signings as justification for asking ridiculous prices for mediocure players. You have to remember that Boras likes to not only get what's the most money currently, but he looks to better his situation for future signings.

However, just because Boras pushes for it doesn't mean it will happen, if the Yankees offer a huge extension it might be hard to argue that A-Rod can get a better offer in the FA market

Who
would be willing to pay 32mil/year? Yanks, Sox, Anaheim? I'm asking, I really don't know...

So if he did opt out, He'd be dependant on a select number of teams bidding his price up... Then what happens if the Sox turn around & say, meh... we don't want to pay that much, & the same goes for other teams?

Could opting out turn around & hurt a-rod?

Re: The Cashman
There was a rumor over on PA a few weeks ago (full disclosure: I'm a regular there) that A-Rod was shopping around for real estate in the NY area.  Obviously not the best thing to go on, but an interesting twist to the story if true.

Though Cash has made some incredibly stupid moves in the past (Igawa anyone?), I don't think he'll let A-Rod get away.  Both are posturing.

And here's to a good series this weekend - hopefully we can do it again in October.  Go Yankees!

Re: The Cashman
Is it so hard to imagine A-Rod in a Sox uniform and Lowell in a Yankees uniform?

I can see it.

Boo Damon. Cheer Bonds.

Re: The Cashman
Lowell has played himself into a 4 year contract this year. We cannot and I pray to God we do not give him anything more than a one year deal with an option for a 2nd.  Id love A-Rod, and with all of our young talent, Manny's contract coming up after 08 (no way I pick up his options unless its a trade) and Papi signed long term,A-Rod would be a great sign even at 30 million a year.  But I would bet anything the MFY's extend his contract, thus keeping Texas's $$$ and keeping the guy.
