Schadenfreude, or Taking Delight in the Suffering of Others (MFY edition)

<snark>
Dear Red Sox Nation,

It is time for us to engage in what will hopefully be a regular seasonal activity, like going to the beach and BBQs.  What I'm talking about here is honest to goodness gloating. I'm talking about 14 beautiful days in August.  These will be days filled with unvarnished gloating, full of confidence, without a hint of fear or trepidation, nor haunted by the demons from our checkered past.  For as many of you here will have already observed, for 14 Days in August the Yankees will play every division leader in the American League.  Consecutively.

Schadenfreude - A meal in 4 Courses

  • We start with an amusing 4 game homestand with Detroit.
  • Followed by a palette cleansing roadtrip to the Angels for 3 games.
  • We review our starting theme with a hearty road trip back to Detroit for 4 more games.
  • and for desert boys and girls? They host us.
  • Star-divide

Savor this my friends. Take time to chew slowly the charred and delicious carcass that is the Yankees season. (ya, I'll have a wing and some white meat, please.)  Lick the grease slowly from your fingers, preferrably in front of someone with a NNY's cap on, extra points if it's pink.

Tuck in my friends.  Have your cake. Eat it. Have seconds.  We've earned this summer where WE are the swaggering bastards, brimming with confidence the OUR team is the one to beat, OUR team is going to the playoffs. And them?  A collapse in August.

Let's not break out the champagne just yet. Remember what happened last August 1? It could happen again. It's not likely, but it is possible.

But once the MFY finish that 4-10 stretch, then we can break out the champagne!

I guess I was just feeling that for once we could approach things with the confidence that we've all suffered from with MFY fans...that delight in looking ahead and KNOWING.  We always have that psychology where we never enjoy the season till it's over and we can look back and say we won, or wallow in the literary misery of the underdog.  Sure there's reality and games to be played but right now I'm just taking a look at August with my feet up and a mimosa in my hand.  Oh, and the red cherry floating next to that slice of orange is a three game road trip to Cleveland, which will be playing for their wildcard lives.  Canapé?

In that spirit, allow me to note that we are now at the 2/3 point of the season and have an 8 game lead. If the MFY were to catch fire and play at 102 wins per season pace for the rest of the year, we would have to play exactly .500 ball the rest of the season to win the division by one game.

Also, note that there is only one other division with a third place team farther out of first than the Yankees are right now.

Now that is getting into the spirit of things!
Cubans and brandy at my place if the MFY don't make the playoffs!

Cause like chocolate, it never gets old:

    Speaking of Delight
I guess this diary is as good a place for this link as anywhere.

    Bye George.

Just my two cents. Keep the change.

Oy...I want to think this is good news but what if someone competent were to buy the team?

    Re: Speaking of Delight
Relax, B Cap. I know the perfect guy to buy the team. His record of competence speaks for itself, he'll be available, he loves baseball, he knows how to spend like a drunken sailor, he's already got great seats at Yankee Stadium, and he's got no idea what it actually means to win.
Just my two cents. Keep the change.

That schedule stretch can't get here soon enough. NY's team ERA hasn't improved much during this recent hot stretch (still 8th in the AL when I checked this morning), and it'll be a lot tougher to slug their way past better opponents.

Re: Schadenfreude, or Taking Delight in the Suffer
Not to worry Danny...also consider that we have like 12 games against Tampa Bay, not to mention the O's and White Sox.  Our easy schedule is just about to start while they have the toughest schedule all year.
