Game Thread: Angels @ Sox. Hmm...

So, it comes to this does it? In order to possibly guarantee a win in Tampa/set up the rotation for the MFYs/whatever else, Julian Tavarez gets another start. Look for Kyle Snyder to be down in the pen early.

The Angels counter with Joe Saunders (12th overall pick in 2002 draft), who has pretty glaring platoon splits. (To wit: vs. LHHs, .200/.217/.222, vs. RHHs, .297/.347/.462) Bobby Kielty may be here just in time. Saunders has been a more successful pitcher on the road.

Get in your OTM picks people. And (hopefully) look for the Oki-machine if a save opportunity arises.

In the Hartford Courant today, Francona is quoted as saying he will continue to put Gagne into tight situations.

Read:  Gagne is the closer today.

Pray for a 10-run lead going into the ninth.

Kielty saved the Sox 2 runs by robbing a homer that would have put the Angels up 4-0. Welcome to Fenway, Bobby.

me too...he has been the one consistent player (OK, after his poor start).  This offense is going to make me pull the rest of my hair out.  Freaking Coco...same spot 2 innings earlier and he choked then, too...

God, this offense...freaking Tavarez has done exactly what they needed...kept them in the game.  We need some cluthc hitting boys.  We cannot get 2 runs off Saunders?

Why can't we get guys like that?
WMP went deep for the Nats. Of course his replacement has already saved us a HR, so I guess its a net wash.

But I'm rooting for WMP. I like the guy, and I hope he hits many many home runs in the NL.

Just my two cents. Keep the change.

Re: Game Thread: Angels @ Sox. Hmm...
While I agree that a number of his moves have been questionable as of late, Francona is limited by what he has to work with. Most managers, given a pitcher who saved 50 games a few years ago and won the Cy Young, would use him any chance he got.

Obviously, Gagne isn't the pitcher he was then. But he's still supposedly a fireballer and an excellent pitcher. I am as pissed of as anyone about his ability to suck, but Francona has to use him at some point, and it's better that we're already losing this game.

Well Gagne gave up two hits (no surprise), but what was surprising, got out of the inning yielding no runs, and striking out the side.

Game over.
Sox split the series with the Angels (which they could have easily had 3 games of) as their lead falls to 4 games over the MFY.

Emotion versus skill sets
I beleive this Red Sox team has more than adequate pitching for the most part, but the hitting, especially clutch hitting is not too good and not too consistent.  We all saw what emotion can do with the 2004 team, and I am afraid that is the only option for this team to prevail.  That is why I thought winning the doubleheader on Friday was so important because we need to see an emotional boost and soon to allow this year to be a real success.  Working for us is great fan support and optimism as often shown here despite reality.  However working against us seems to be the Red Sox management that seems to be working as diligently as possible to crush any emotional lift with use of ineffectual relievers brought in by last minute trades and the apparent failure to motivate and use better hitters needed earlier in the game.

I could finish up by saying that the squeaking sound of this team sliding off the page is continuing, but instead, let me say that I really do hope that an emotional boost can still overcome the relatively obvious lackings of this current team.  Is Francona up to that motivational and piloting job??  Stay tuned.

Re: Game Thread: Angels @ Sox. Hmm...
It is mind-boggling to me that Jonathan Papelbon has not been called on to make a 4 out save since April 8th. Also mind-boggling is that the Sox have had the best one/two "set-up and closer punch" in baseball this season with Omajima and Paps. While I understand that Gagne has been brought in to shore up the bullpen, to act as insurance in the event of another Timlin arm or shoulder ailment, to help fill the void left by Donnelly and to reduce Okajima' already way too heavy workload, it baffles me why Tito had to mess that Sunday afternoon against the Orioles with the "8th inning bridge to the 9th inning" modus operendi that had worked perfectly well all season.

Actually, I stand corrected, Paps did make a 4 out save on Saturday against the Angels. This was the first time he was called on to do this since April 8th.
