C'mon.  I am waiting for you guys to say, "Sonnanstine is a good pitcher"..."Tampa may have something in this guy".  Please.  We are freaking pathetic.  The guy has a 6.00 ERA.

Re: Open Thread: 8.15.07 vs. Tampa Bay
Last time I checked, we'd won 60% of our games. That's about what you expect from a World Series contender. And when even the worst teams win 40% of the time, I don't think it's pathetic to live in the realm of reality.

Re: Open Thread: 8.15.07 vs. Tampa Bay
Put down the pipe.  The way this team is put together right now, there is no way they win the world series, let alone get there.  Unreal, no reality here at all.

Re: Open Thread: 8.15.07 vs. Tampa Bay
Absolutely right. No team is excused from having a bad day. No credit should be given for fighting back in the late innings. Timlin and J-Tav should be hung for their efforts this afternoon. Most wins in the ML? Meaningless. It's a meaningless statistic.

There's worrying and then there's being overly pessimistic. We should've knocked Sonnanstine around like a pinata this afternoon. It didn't happen. What can you do, at this point? What roster move can be made? What lineup switch? Who would you have put at 1-2 this afternoon rather than DP and Youks?

Channel the energy into trying to find solutions to the problems that would actually work. Saying "we're pathetic" (a lot) doesn't add to the discussion.

FWIW, Sonnanstine struck out 66 with a 1.03 WHIP in 71 IP at AAA this season. AA, 2006: 1.00 WHIP, 153 Ks in in 185 2/3. Is he guaranteed to have a successful ML career? No. But it's pretty clear that he's not an entirely talentless scrub. (MiLB.com)

His FIP at the ML-level is 4.74, he's been unlucky in terms of the amount of runners he's LOB: 59.1%, and his BB/G (1.8) is nothing to sneeze at. (THT, all)

I basically agree with this, although holding management accountable is tough to do in a city with inadequate stadium infrastructure that leads to support for the team no matter how they play.  Still, well said.

For some reason, the Sox struggle against pitchers they've never seen before -- no matter how bad they are. It seems like they always struggle against guys like this. I'm not too worried about it, but this game is getting better...

Dammit, the O's really need a better bullpen.
Yankees tie it with a 3-run HR with 2 outs in the 9th.

Shelley Duncan
I'll give the kid credit.  He didn't hit a mistake, he hit a pitch low and outside and pulled it to left field.  A very good job of hitting.

Well, it's gone to extra innings.

(I'm in MD today so I can watch the O's live but not the Sox.)

He is & he isn't... he gets himself into jams but then works his way out ( usually). I think need a better bridge to Mariano anyway.

Mo Rivera so far: two doubles, a HR, and a ground out in 4 batters.

Just bad execution by the Sox --I can only "see" via Gameday but why was Lugo still at 2nd? Did Pedroia even attempt to bunt him over to 3rd?

yeah he did, but it fouled when he did and the infield pulled in so bunting was no longer a smart idea

gotta tip my hat to reyes though, he could've fllen apart after lugo's ten-pitch at bat/double, but he hung in there to strike out the side.

Re: Open Thread: 8.15.07 vs. Tampa Bay
Ugh.  Just like that we go from walkoff-y goodness to "Sox can't beat the 7.00 ERA wonder"-ville.

(Look, I know the metaphors are mixed; I'm not trying very hard.}

Has anyone else noticed that the scrub nobody pitchers (Guthrie on Mother's Day, too many other examples that escape me at this point) seem to handcuff the Sox?  Kazmir and Lilly aren't that good, but the Sox couldn't seem to hit them.  At least there's not many of them in the playoffs, but it's a perpetual source of frustration.

Re: Open Thread: 8.15.07 vs. Tampa Bay
Too early to call on Guthrie. May be wearing down, I want to say this is the biggest workload he's had in his pro career.

Kazmir needs to be in his own category of the pitchers you listed, btw. He is VERY good.

Re: Open Thread: 8.15.07 vs. Tampa Bay
And Lilly is sort of like Wake in that he can have a blow out game, but he also has gems here and there. It could be just bad luck that the "gem" seem to happen when we faced him

by Realistic on Aug 15, 2007 6:49 PM EDT up reply actions

A tough one to lose, but 5 runs should get you home against TB.  And whoever suggested that Kazmir is average isn't watching the same 23 year old guy I've been watching.  I wish we had this guy, he's great and still really, really young.

Re: just got in
Umm, that was me.  And my bad.

What I was thinking of were earlier seasons where Kazmir was not such a great pitcher, yet always had a lot of success against the Red Sox (I just googled "kazmir era against red sox" and found a bunch of examples---witness this story where his ERA was 4.30 but was 2.64 against Boston).  But it was pretty sloppy nonetheless.

Re: Open Thread: 8.15.07 vs. Tampa Bay
Sometimes you just have to tip your hat. I know it was disappointing that the Red Sox lost with the tying run in scoring position but they were down 6 runs going into the 7th. It's hard to be upset over that kind of a performance, especially when the Red Sox don't lose any ground because of it. The Red Sox didn't win, but the magic number still decreased because the Yankees did. So that's a successful day in my mind.
