I've been saying for a few weeks now that part of the problem is that he's been ridiculously unlucky. If his BABIP was at his career average instead of 100 points below it, he'd be hitting .280 and everyone would be pleased.

For a while, I wondered if the Rockies might take Lowell and WMP for Helton. Now I'm sure they wouldn't, and I'm not sure I'd want to trade Lowell anyway.

WMP is a failed experiment at this point, but I think I'd be comfortable with Ellsbury as the fourth OF at this point. The problem is that he really needs to play every day right now.

Re: I'd be nice to see him turn the corner
You have been saying that, and on the A-Rod thread I just replied that it can't be luck, because he's just not hitting the ball hard, everything's a soft grounder etc., instead of spectacularly unfortunate flyouts etc.

So, erm, you got any salt for this crow I gotta eat now?

Re: I'd be nice to see him turn the corner
Well, as I said, it's part of the problem. It's not the entire problem.

I think most of what's left, though, can be attributed to lousy coaching. A decent hitting coach should have been able to help him get his ground ball/line drive/fly ball mix back where it should be.

Re: Agreed
Not if his knee really needs surgery. I've had injuries like that -- if you're a power hitting baseball player, they sap most of your power. He'll need more days off than we normally see just to maintain his current pace without doing more damage to the knee.

Re: Agreed
That's how knee injuries work, though. If it's not bad enough to debilitate you, you'll feel fine most days, but if you push it much, it'll feel like someone smacked you with a hammer. The good news is that if he doesn't hurt it any worse, he can get scoped in November after we win the Series and be good as new by spring training.

While I love watching the MFY lose
If the Sox play well, the Yanks have no shot at the division.  Hey, if Boston is only 6 games over .500 in the second half, the MFY have to play .690 ball just to catch them.
I gotta go 'cause I'm probably definitely gonna nod out again.

by Drugs Delaney on Jul 12, 2007 10:21 PM EDT up reply actions

Some fun back of the envelope math
The Sox have 74 games left.  If they play .600 ball the rest of the season (and remember they started out playing .700), the Skankees would have to play .725 the rest of the way to win 55 of their remaining 76 and tie the Sox' theoretical 98-64 season.

Also, .600 the rest of the way seems really reachable, as the Sox are .614 on the season.  With 435 runs scored and 346 runs allowed, their pythagorean is roughly 190K / (190K + 120K), or .613---or very close to what their actual record is.  That's good enough for 99/100 wins on the season, which the Yankees could only match with a second-half pace of .737 (56-20).  The Yanks' pythagorean, by the way, is about .550, predicting a 42-34 second half.

Knocking wood, of course.

Re: While I love watching the MFY lose
Almost as good, we have a bigger lead on the second place team in our division -- the MFY -- than any other division leader in the majors has over the third place team in their division. And with the exception of the AL Central, it's even a bigger lead than any other division leader has over the fourth place team in their division.

That's impressive!

Now, granted, the MFY stink this year, but they have a very weak schedule the rest of the way and they played better than their record would indicate so far. I think .600 ball is attainable for them the rest of the way. Call that 46 more wins the rest of the way, which would leave them with 89 wins. Boston would only need 26 more wins to win the division -- that's a .351 winning percentage the rest of the way. That's why I don't want Theo to be too hasty making trades -- it's damn near impossible for us to miss the playoffs at this point, so we ought to be able to get our key players a lot of rest down the stretch. That way they'll be healthy for the playoffs and we won't have to part with any prized prospects.

Of course, if someone offers Theo a great deal -- think Pujols or Cabrera for, say, David Murphy -- he should take it. It's just that when you acquire a star player in a deadline deal, you usually end up giving away prospects who could end up being just as good as or better than (collectively, at least) the star you acquire, just for the uncertain proposition of winning now. This year, we can afford to insist on giving away a little bit less if any deals are made.

If this team is healthy in October, any opponent is going to have to be extraordinarily hot and lucky to win a playoff series.
