Around SBN: Steve McNair Dead - Former NFL QB Shot and Killed

Post Game (4/14/07): BOS - 8, LAA - 0

Source: FanGraphs.com

The Starter:

Ever since he struggled on Opening Day, Curt Schilling has been pretty automatic. Schilling took the Angels to school, pitching 8 full innings, allowing 4 hits, a walk, no runs and striking out 4.

The 'Pen:

With a great performance by Schilling, only Brendan Donnelly got work in against his former team. Donnelly allowed just one hit.

The Lineup:

Another 'smashing' effort by the Home Towne Team. Eric Hinske, who subbed for Kevin Youkilis at first base and in the two-hole, was fantastic. He went 2-for-3 with 3 runs and 2 walks. David Ortiz went 2-for-4 with a run, 4 RBI and a walk. Ortiz hit a home run in the 8th inning with two on.

The Field:

No errors is good enough for me.

Winner: Curt Schilling
He was lights out. Now if we can only repeat this performance another 31 times.

Winner: Coco Crisp
Again? Ehh. Crisp was 0-for-3 with a walk, a strikeout and left three stranded.

I know the Sox only had Doug M for half a season in 04, but did you guys cringe every time he came to the plate?

People less lazy than I can correct me, but I don't remember him having more than a handful of at-bats in any situation that could be deemed "important". He also hit well in limited time in the playoffs that season. (4 for 9 with a bunt, 2B, and an RBI)

Plus, rather than coming off a half-decent season in KC and a quarter-decent season as a NYM, he was (prior to 2004) coming off of three straight seasons of .365 or better OBP.

I was never excited to see him come to the plate, but his good days didn't seem as far behind then, either.

Mientkiewicz
Can't hit anymore.  I was surprised when the Yankees picked him up, and even more surprised when they decided to start him.  To me, he is late-inning defensive option (like he was in Boston).  New York would be smarter playing Giambi at first, Melky in LF, and Matsui at DH (when he comes off the DL).  You lose more games with a bad defensive LF than you will with a 1B with a bad arm and no range.  Doug M should only start when Wang, a ground ball pitcher, starts.

But, I'm happy New York wants to keep a sure out in their line up.

I gotta go 'cause I'm probably definitely gonna nod out again.

Re: Mientkiewicz
Seriously, one of the dumbest roster moves I've ever seen.  He even pinch hit for Josh Phelps this weekend.  This guy should never pinch hit for anyone.  Hopefully he will break his leg or something.

Coco
It seems like Coco Crisp is taking a different approach at the plate. It seems like he's taking more pitches, whereas last year he was quite the free swinger. Maybe that's not valid though - ESPN.com shows his pitches per plate appearance only up slightly (3.9 to 3.8 last year).

I'm up for giving him so more time to work things through, but I feel the Sox should give WMP some of Crisp's starts. If either starts to rake, then they can start them in most games. In limited at bats, Crisp has yet to get a hit off lefthanded pitching, so it might be worthwhile to platoon them.

Re: Coco
The plan for today's game was to sit Coco and start Wily Mo. But, like last week, Pena's start was scratched thanks to a rain out. He should start tomorrow, though.

suggestion
It might be a good idea to track the Mueller and Mendoza awards by indicating the number of times a player has won it--e.g. Schilling (10).

Re: suggestion
This is a great idea. We might do a sidebar, but that way might actually be as easy/easier.
