[editor's note, by Randy Booth] Tommy was at today's Sox game. He has some good information about what he saw.
So I made it to today's game at City of Palms Park. It's really a cool little stadium, not a bad seat in the house, plenty of shade (thankfully, as I was wiped out from fishing from 6 to noon this morning). Good times.
I know Curt has made a big deal about trying to get batters to hit into outs rather than just striking everyone out. I could see this strategy in effect today. Very economical show. I also saw a few first pich changeups, which were invariably taken for called strikes. It's a whole new look for a guy who has been around for a long time, hopefully it takes a while for the league to catch on. The O's smoked a couple doubles down the line, and Millar smacked another one to left-center to drive in the second run. But on the whole Curt looked good. Seven innings, 85 pitches, 6 hits, two runs. I don't remember any walks, but I cold be wrong.
The Sox' bats were pretty quiet, as they have been all spring. Bedard is a heck of a pitcher, striking out the side in 2nd, and I think 8 overall. But he was helped by a strong wind. Youk, Wily Mo, Papi and Drew all flew out to the warning track. Drew was actualy robbed of a homer by the O's LF whose name I do not know. Helluva catch, we gave him a standing O for the effort. "Tek crushed a homer from the right side off Bedard, which was nice to see. Hopefully it's something he can build off.
Anyways. We left after the seventh, as I was pretty spent from the fishing trip. But it was still fun to see some baseball.
