Sports Illustrated Predictions

Sports illustrated had their annual baseball preview issue come out this week.  They predicted that the Angels will beat the Dodgers in the world series. I cant see the Angels winning it all.  The Dodgers have a decent chance I think to make it to the world series but they do have to go through the Mets.  Maybe if they dont try and score two runs at a time like last year in the playoffs ( great base running dodgers ) and take it one run at a time, they might have a chance.  I think its going to be the Mets and the Sox in the world series.

What do you guys think?

Re: Sports Illustrated Predictions
Abou a month ago I thought the Angels had a serious chance, then I looked again at their starting rotation. Its depth doesn't impress me that much, particularly with an injured Jered Weaver.

If I were a Mets fan, I'd be seriously concerned about the pitching. The depth chart goes: Glavine, El Duque, Maine, Perez, Park, Pedro. Each a question mark, even the evergreen Glavine.

I like the Indians and the Diamondbacks (Brandon Webb plus a fantastic young outfield) as slightly-less-than-obvious picks.

I'm a fan of the D-Backs, also. They've got a young, talented squad that could really break out.

Re: Pirates vs. Devil Rays
Probably, but let's face it, who do you know who predicted last spring training that Detroit would play in the 2006 World Series? TB has enough talent that they could be the shocker of 2008 or 2009; this year is a bit of a stretch.

As for the NL, with the exception of the Mets and possibly the Cards, there aren't any teams you can be certain will be good this year. Some bets are safer than others, sure, but given the overall quality of the league, it could take just a few lucky breaks for some longshot to make the Series.

Outside of Kazmir, I really don't think the 'Rays have the pitching talent to go anywhere. That being said, they have some very exciting position players.

Re: Sports Illustrated Predictions
I think the Dodgers will have a good team. I think in the National league, the team with the best hitting wins. There are a lot of good pitching teams, but not many of the offensive powerhouses like in the AL. I think in the American league it will be the team with the best pitching, since most teams can score plenty of runs. I think recent examples pretty much reflect that. So in my estimation that would be the Red Sox or White Sox, maybe the Angels in the American league and then in National league it would be the Cubs, Dodgers, St. Louis or Mets. That's just my reasoning.

Re: Sports Illustrated Predictions
I wonder if Buerhle will make a comeback this year. If he does, the Other Sox will be a force. I'm rooting for the Injuns in the AL Central, though.

I think the Dodgers get it done in the AL West, though I think that the D-Backs and Rockies will be surprisingly good.

I hope this is the year that the Yankees mediocre pitching finally gets the best of them. However, I doubt it. If last year didn't make 'em suck, then very little will.
