Community Projections: Coco Crisp

Source: Yahoo!

His first year as a Red Sox didn't go so well. Coco Crisp landed on the disabled list and was never himself after that. This year he's healthy and he's hitting further down in the lineup. Will that help or hurt Coco?

It's community projections time:

I'm very optimistic about Crisp this season. I think he's going to come out of the gate firing and wanting to prove himself again. I think he'll have a very fine season hitting lower in the order because a lot of pressure will be taken off his shoulders.

This is my projection through the All Star break, when the front office decides to usher in the era of Ellsbury and trades Coco for bullpen help. Everything I've read about Ellsbury is that he has been VERY impressive this spring. And with teams like the Padres and White Sox shopping quality relievers for CFs like Aaron Rowand, Coco could bring something good to the table.

Just my two cents. Keep the change.

How about I double the numbers for the sake of the community projections?

Re: Community Projections: Coco Crisp
Okay, though I basically halved your projection (which I thought were just about right on), and subtracted a little OBP. I thought it was fair to project a trade. I like Coco, but I think he is the only position player on the Sox that is expendable. I see the Sox trading him mid-season and splitting his ABs between WMP and Ellsbury. Coco is signed through 2009 at an average of $5m per, plus an option for 2010 at $8m, which makes him pretty marketable considering that Gary Matthews and Juan Pierre are getting $10m plus. The White Sox, Pirates, Rangers and Astros all need a long-term CFs, Kotsay is having health issues for the A's, the Brewers could be looking if Bill Hall doesn't work out as a CF, ditto the Cubs with Soriano and the Giants with Roberts. I'd be surprised if the Sox don't take advantage of the shortage of quality CFs and move Coco to clear the way for Ellsbury. At least that's what I'd do. Unless Coco starts conjuring JD, at which point all bets are off.
Just my two cents. Keep the change.

This is the best reasoning for trading crisp i have read.
Good point.

Re: Community Projections: Coco Crisp
Agreed on most points, except for one. I don't think Ellsbury is ready for a full-time gig yet, at least on the Red Sox' squad. Do you think the F.O. is willing to play through some growing pains? We'll have some either way with WMP or Ellsbury. I'd wager Tito would start WMP for in CF for offensive firepower and sub in Jacoby as a defensive replacement. Playing Jacoby off the bench would cut down on his at-bats and slow his overall development.

Were the Red Sox virtually any other team, I would agree with you wholeheartedly, Tommy. However, the Sox are perennially contending at the trade deadline and I don't think they'll downgrade centerfield this season. It's logical that the Sox' brass would want to win the World Series again before Manny leaves town and Schill retires/leaves. The Sox will most certainly be a part of the post-season race, so I just don't see it happening.

I will make one exception, just to cover my butt. If the bullpen stinks so badly that it's costing us games, or we haven't found a closer that sticks, I would not discount trading Coco Crisp for an arm that improves the team overall. Ideally, though, I would trade Coco for a prospects, including a power-hitting corner prospect (or SS to convert to 3B or to move Lugo to 3B; Brandon Wood I'm looking at you).

Re: Community Projections: Coco Crisp
I agree that Ellsbury needs a bit more seasoning, but I think Murphy could be our fourth OF until then. And honestly I don't know how much of a downgrade WMP and Ellsbury/Murphy would be. I like Coco, but I'd rather have WMP in the lineup everyday. Given 500 ABs as an everyday starter, I could see WMP hitting 30 HRs (sure, with 175 Ks, but who's counting). I think the added production of WMP would compensate for his defensive shortcomings (and Coco is no Andruw Jones in CF, mind you). And we could use one of the kids as a defensive replacement.

If Coco could get us a solid arm (or Brandon Wood... drool), I'd pull the trigger.

Just my two cents. Keep the change.

I am guessing he'll score a career high number of runs, since he's on the Red Sox, not the Indians.  The other numbers are based on him recovering form to pre-2006, but not completely.

Re: Community Projections: Coco Crisp
As for SBs, nobody ever steals bases for the Red Sox.  If Rickey Henderson had been on the Sox for a season after he'd stolen 100+ for some other team, he would have stolen 14 for the Red Sox and then gone to a third team and stolen 120.

Re: Community Projections: Coco Crisp
Coco did steal 22 in 105 games last year. I could definitely see him hit the 30 mark in 130 or 140 games.

Re: He probably should have charged the catcher
Poor Jacoby.

Reminds me of a baseball game last year at my college. Right before the game, the catcher threw down to second but, instead, hit the pitcher in the head. He ended up throwing a amazing game, too.

Re: Community Projections: Coco Crisp
I am a fan of Coco, and I hope he does well. I think he has a good spirit for the game.

I will say .282 / .342 / .440 with a return to about 15 HR and 25 SB.

Re: Community Projections: Coco Crisp
I expect modest improvement over last season.
Avg .280
OBP .325
SLG .430
HR 14
RBI 70
R 70
SB 25 (CS 5)

Coco doesn't walk much, certainly not enough to lead off. His highest OBP was .345, and that was in a year when he hit .300. I'm not fully convinced that he is recovered from injury, or that he'll reach his '04/'05 numbers again. The one positive from last year was his low caught stealing rate.
