Simulation Madness
The Red Sox advanced in the first round of the Simulation Madness tournament. A tournament that uses the baseball simulation program that I wrote in Visual Basic 6.0 to simulate baseball games. Each series is a best four out of seven series and in the first round the Red Sox were down 3 games to 2 to the Royals and got big performances from Schilling and Dice-K in the final two games. The Red Sox are the #3 seed in the AL bracket and next face the A's who swept the Mariners in four straight. The simulation is using ZIPS projections for it's input data and each team is using a 5 man rotation.

Red Sox vs Yankees (Quarter Finals) Recap
Red Sox drew first blood on a two run home run from Manny Ramirez in the 2nd
ining. The Yankees clawed back with one in the 3rd and two in the 5th to take
a 3-2 lead. The Red Sox tied the score in the 6th inning on a solo home run
from catcher Jason Varitek. The game remained tied until the 11th inning, when
the Red Sox scored four runs off of Yankee relievers Farnsworth and Rivera. The
Yankees could only muster up one run in the bottom of the 11th innings and lost
7-4. Robinson Cano went 3 for 4 with a single, double and home run in the loss.
HRs: Ramirez(1,2), Varitek(1), Cano(1)
Boston leads 2-0
Game 3: Andy Pettitte vs Josh Beckett
The Yankees called upon Andy Pettitte to work some of his playoff magic to get
back into the series. Pettite didn't impress but the Yankee bats came to life
scoring 9 runs and pulling off a miracle win 9-6. Trailing 6-5 headed into the
top of the 9th inning, the Yankees took the lead on a clutch two run home run from
the much maligned AROD. The Yankees added two more runs and Mariano Rivera struck
out the side in the 9th inning to preserve the win.
HRs: Rodriguez(1,2), Giambi(1), Matsui(1), Ortiz(2), Ramirez(3), Crisp(1)
Boston leads 2-1
Game 4: Kei Igawa vs Jon Papelbon
The Yankees jumped out to a 4-1 lead in the 3rd inning on a grand-slam by Jason
Giambi. The Red Sox countered with three of their own, tying the game on a three
run home run from Coco Crisp. The Yankees lead 8-7 headed into the bottom of the 7th
when Kyle Farnsworth and Mike Myers ran into some problems, allowing the Red Sox to
rally for 6 runs and take a 13-8 lead. The Yankees battled back for one in the 8th
and three in the 9th but came up one run short, losing 13-12 and falling down 3
games to 1 in the series.
HRs: Ramirez(4), Ortiz(3), Drew(3), Varitek(2), Crisp(2), Jeter(1), Giambi(2), Posada(1)
Boston leads 3-1
Game 5: Carl Pavano vs Tim Wakefield
Pavano looking shaky at times, managed to gut out a 6-1/3 inning, 123 pitch performance.
Scott Proctor pitched a perfect 2-2/3 innings of relief for the save. The Yankees built a
3rd inning 5-1 lead behind home runs from Giambi and Cano. Abreu added a three run home run
in the 7th inning for insurance after the Red Sox had pulled to within 5-4.
HRs: Abreu(1), Giambi(3), Cano(2), Ramirez(5)
Boston leads 3-2
Game 6: Curt Schilling vs Mike Mussina
The Yankees scored two runs in the first inning on a 2-run shot by Abreu. The Red Sox
tied the game with a run in the 3rd and 5th innings. The game remained tied 2-2 until
the 7th inning. Mike Mussina gave up one run and was knocked out of the game, pitching
6-1/3 innings, scattering 11 hits, striking out 8, walking none and making 109 pitches.
The Yankees in turn knocked out Schilling after 6-2/3 innings of 7 hit ball, by scoring
two runs to take a 4-3 lead into the 8th. In the 8th inning the Red Sox got a two out,
two run single from Mike Lowell off of Scott Proctor. The Yankees trailing 5-4 heading
into the bottom of the 9th inning, would make some noise against Mike Timlin who was
pulled from the game with the tying and winning runs in scoring position. Devern Hansack
was able to get Jorge Posada to fly out to deep right field to end the game.
HRs: Abreu(2)
