While we wait...

...I thought I'd take look at that other deal that is supposed to be all but complete.

Miguel Cabrera and Dontrelle Willis to the Tigers for every single non-Rick Porcello prospect left in the system.

For the Marlins:

Hard to say. I wonder if you could've gotten, even if a bit lower quality (Cameron Maybin is supposed to be the [censored]), you could've filled more holes. I could've seen, even, looking for a team that could allow you to move defensive black hole Dan Uggla to 1B, in addition to netting a pitcher and an outfielder. If that wasn't out there (I'm looking at you, LA teams), then this isn't a bad return. Andrew Miller and Cameron Maybin are as good a "top 2" as most any team could ask for. The rest are iffy, with Mike Rabelo being an interesting inclusion given his "eh" offense at both the ML and MiL levels. Dallas Trahern has been decent but not great, though is still youngish (22). Eulogio De La Cruz is similarly 'eh', and Burke Badenhop has impressive numbers but is 24 years old and has only pitched 18+ innings above the A-level. I just come away with a feeling that the return isn't bad but discouraged for the Marlins that it wasn't the best they could do.

For the Tigers:

You will score 1000 runs, and it is going to be extremely disgusting the entire time. Even if not 1000, all signs point to this being the top offensive club in the ML next season. Scored 887 runs last season and lost no significant contributors while adding Miguel Cabrera. What's the downside? Well, Dontrelle Willis could easily continue his downward spiral. And any defensive alignment you go with could be bad. Either by putting too high a demand on Curtis Granderson (with Miguel in LF and Ordonez in RF), or by making the left side of your IF all questionable (with Miguel at 3B). Another option, possibly, would be to put Miguel at 1B and slide Guillen to 3B. Seems unlikely, given that the Tigers wanted to move him to 1B to reduce strain and the risk of injury. Meanwhile, this does nothing to address the bullpen and you're pretty much out of trade chips. On a similar note, the Tigers will not be outdone by anyone in stripping down their farm system. Expect the Tigers to sign a RP for a semi-ridiculous contract before the winter is over. David Riske, 3 years, $18M?

And I dunno. There's probably some Santana stuff going on right now. I'm not thrilled with those rumors about 5 players going the Twins way. And I was getting excited about seeing Ryan Kalish progress through the system.

Re: While we wait...
Hang on now. There are other AL teams making significant moves? What's up with that? Now we've got to think about the Tigers and the Sox? What's next? The Rays being competitive?

(Oh wait...)

Detroit is going to have a sick offense next year, and I even think Willis will be rejuvanated getting out of Florida. He likes the limelight, and now a great performance might actually do more than  get him on Sports Center.

Re: While we wait...
True on all points, though I'm not sure just how rejuvenated he'll be. Certainly though, there are worse parks in the AL for him to call home if he wants to get his numbers down a bit.

Re: While we wait...
Oh no they didn't! Oh yes, AL central, they did.
The tigers will now be an offensive powerhouse, as if they weren't already.

And with Cleveland looking strong again next year and the Angels bringing back another good team (inc. tori hunter), man these playoffs are gonna be good- in the A.L. at least.

...too soon to be looking forward to that?

Schulz. It's never too soon.

Also, it's way too soon.

Re: While we wait...
I predict the Sox will seriously look into Inge as our 1st/3rd guy.  I've never really liked the guy for some reason, but he is a gamer. Wonder if he can catch a knuckleball?

Re: While we wait...
Too expensive and too long-term a commitment for a backup of that nature.

Re: While we wait...
If the Indians don't make some major moves they are screwed. This trade leaves the Tigers with pieces for trade, like Thames, Inge and a pitcher...so they are going to do nothing but get more guys and get better. If Jason Bay is the move the Indians are going to make, might as well give the AL Central to the Tigers now. I think the Indians could counter this move by the Tigers with a trade for a significant slugger, in case Hafner has the kind of year he has last year again. They should really look into trading CC, they could get a fortune. Its prob. less than 40% chance they re-sign him.

Re: While we wait...
I'm not sure the Tigers get anything particularly valuable for Thames and Inge. Thames, in particular, personifies corner bat with power who can't do much of anything else, including field. Inge has that contract that doesn't look too pretty in terms of years especially, and he's 30.

I don't see the Tigers having any kind of trade pieces to get anything more of real value.  Maybe I'll be wrong.

In the case of the Indians, keeping the status quo and Andrew Miller leaving means Indians pitching >> Tigers pitching, and will remain that way at Opening Day. The question is, how many runs will the Tigers non-Granderson/Polanco defenders give up, and will the Indians' offense be just enough.

I don't think they need to go into panic mode just yet. There's not really an appropriate countermove for Miguel Cabrera anyway.

Of course, Indians pitching was already >> Tigers pitching.

Re: While we wait...
Am I the only one who is still picking the Indians for the AL Central?

Seriously, Fat man is good, but the problem with the Tigers has never been bats, its getting quality starts and relief.

Sure, J. Verlander is tight and so is Joel Zumaya, but come on lets all be honest here...is anyone really afraid of Bonderman, Robertson, Rodgers and now Willis?

LOL no Effing way.  Ill take CC + Fausto and the Indians great pen (adding that guy from Japan).

You know the Sox have played in the AL East for a while now and the Yanks lineup is just as powerful, their pitching is not that good and how did they do in the playoffs.  Not good.

Pitching wins playoffs, we saw that this year.  With Santana, our rotation is insane and Beckett, Santana, Dice-K and Schilling can handle any lineup.

Re: While we wait...
Exactly. And they even bungled the whole "get a great defensive SS so we can play Guillen at 1B and be able to play him for 155+ games". Renteria may have been great defensively, but he isn't anymore.

2nd in the AL in scoring runs last season.

I guess though, the main ingredient is to increase the run differential, which the Tigers certainly have done. And anyone would've been an upgrade on Guillen re: infield D.

Re: While we wait...
If I could bet this, I would put large amounts of money that Willis gets raked pitching in the AL.  DH + much better hitters = 5+ ERA.

His stuff has not been that great for a while now.  Its a lot different facing the Yankees, Red Sox, Indians, Angels v. Braves, Phillies, Cubs + Dodgers.

I'd wait on the bets.

He may have been Randy Moss-ing it the last couple years.

LOL

I like that "Moss-ing".  Its funny bc i am a Pats fan.

Would not be as funny if I was an Oakland fan.

Re: While we wait...
I'm a Pats fan too, and I even hate it a bit from that perspective.

I mean, I've seen writers who (and granted, not putting up 100 yd games with 2+ TDs lately has slowed this talk anyway) say they wouldn't vote for him as MVP b/c of that crap in Oakland.

Because he mailed it in, in Oakland, in the 2006 season, he will not be eligible to be the 2007 MVP according to some writers.

Almost thankfully, he may need some ridiculous heroics over the next couple weeks to even get in the upper echelon of the debate again anyway.

Re: While we wait...
I think the real question we should be discussing is  WTF ARE THE ANGELS DOING?

signing Torii Hunter to a retarded contract when you really do not need him?

Holding Ervin Santana back in a Miggy C. deal?

Not getting a 3rd baseman?

Not getting anyone to protect Vladdy?

WTF?

Anyone?

If I am the Mariners, I am calling Oakland + Baltimore to see if I can get another starter and then signing Kuroda from Japan and maybe even Fukodome to replace an OF in a trade.  The Mariners can win the AL West.

Sounds like the same things that the Angels do every year to me.

Re: While we wait...
Seattle would be an interesting landing spot for Bedard. If the Mariners got creative with some (okay, all) of their OF prospects, could they potentially make Brian Roberts part of the deal? (I know they're kind of disillusioned/disappointed with Jose Lopez at this point).

Maybe I'm just talking crazy here, but I think SoxAcumen has a point. The Angels are a ship without a rudder. WhereTF are they going from here?

by Allen Chace on Dec 4, 2007 11:09 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

Re: While we wait...
I was thinking the same thing.  Fukodome is out there, he will not cost Seattle as much since they are popular in Japan bc of Ichiro and Jojima.  I mean paying Fukodome will get you money down the road bc of the large market in Japan.

So move one of your OFs + others for Bedard, sign Fukodome to fill the spot, sign Kuroda.

Then you have a staff of Hernandez, Kuroda, Bedard and you can lead off with Ichiro and Fukodome and get people on base for their sluggers.  And you still have JJ Puts to close.

I think that team can beat the Angels.

"on base for their sluggers."
You mean this guy and this guy? Or their DH?

Granted, Ibanez is pretty good. But I have to think the Angels are still the favorites to lose in the ALDS (unless they're playing the Yanks...). Kendrick will improve, Hunter's a pretty good addition, and maybe Brandon Wood turns into the guy he's supposed to turn into.

Manny Ramirez is a bad man

Re: "on base for their sluggers."
Believe it or not, Beltre put together a pretty good season last year. I agree that the M's still lack a big masher, but they could play small-ball and be successful with excellent pitching.

Re: "on base for their sluggers."
So all they need is excellent pitching, then.

The Mariners have one starter with an ERA below 4 - the inimitable Felix Hernandez (3.92). Considering they play half their games in a pitcher's park, this does not speak well for their rotation. Jarrod Washburn (4.32) and Miguel Batista (4.29) were also pretty good. Everyone else (Baek, Ramirez, Feierabend, Jeff "World Series Champ" Weaver) was beyond awful.

Thanks to excellent work from the bullpen (namely Putz and Sherrill) the M's finished the season ranked only 10th in AL pitching. Their Pythagorean record was 79-83, and the M's outperformed it by 9 games. A lot of luck helps to cover up some serious problems - bad pitching and a weak line-up.
