No, Boston still is better than New York

The people over at USA Today were wondering if New York and Boston have changed places on top of the sports totem pole.

Patriots, Red Sox, Celtics. Boston College, Bruins, Revolution.

If you're tired of hearing about New England sports success, imagine how it feels in New York, where decades of swagger have given way to an inferiority complex as the Giants take their shot at stopping the Patriots' run to an unbeaten season.

Actually, the only team that has been good in New York has been the Yankees and they haven't won a World Series since 2000. Considering they were playing the Mets, it would have been hard for New York not to win the trophy.

Meanwhile in New England, the Red Sox have won two World Series and the Patriots have won three Super Bowls. Not to mention the Patriots are undefeated, the Celtics are the best team in the NBA and even the Bruins are putting up a fight in that league called the NHL.

New York has the Jets and -- oh, man -- the Knicks. Hey, at least the Giants are heading to the playoffs and the Bills can finish the season at .500.

Is this all true or am I just being a homer?

You're actually not going far enough.

New York doesn't have the Jets or the Giants. They play in New Jersey.

Re: No, Boston still is better than New York
Yes, but they are the New York Jets and Giants, therefore we can at least give them that.

I think of them as the New Jersey Biplanes and Shrimp.

Re: No, Boston still is better than New York
You're being a pretty ridiculous homer. Just because the Celtics have the best record in the NBA doesn't mean they are the best team, they'd get murdered in a 7 game series against a West team.

Besides that, yes, there is sports dominance.

Re: No, Boston still is better than New York
Maybe I should have put "best record" for Celtics, but they have still only lost three games and all were very close. Once they travel further west and face stiffer competition I think we'll see how they really stack up.

Re: No, Boston still is better than New York
No, I think the Celtics could easily win a 7-game series against the West, much like Detriot did a few years ago. Garnett is one of the top 3 players in the NBA, Pierce is one of the top 10 or so, and Allen is one of the top 25. No other team in the NBA can claim that they have three players who are among the top 25 players in the NBA.

Vermont and Conn. tend to have awkward sports alliances. Not calling you awkward, it's just that your state has an awkward lie in New England.

Re: No, Boston still is better than New York
Very true. I live in CT and there is a very strong base for Sox Nation but there are also many MFY fans unfortunately but alot of fans are coming out of the woodwork because of the Sox' recent success that I never saw in the late 90's.

Re: No, Boston still is better than New York
Yea, I live on the coast of CT right at the edge of RI (Southeast corner) making me geographically slightly closer to Boston.  The sentiment is clearly Red Sox around here, but the further west I go, the more MFY fans there are.  I'd say western CT is at least 80% Yankee fans.

Take it all in everybody, no city will ever have the sports dominance that boston/new england has this year.

Re: No, Boston still is better than New York
I know it doesn't compare to the present state of pro sports in Boston, but the mid to late 80s were pretty good too....
Red Sox-world series 86, AL East 88 and 90
Celtics-World champs 81,84,86...finals 85 and 87
Bruins-Stanley Cup Finals 88 and 90
Patriots-Super Bowl 86(85 season)

Probably not as good as today, but still not too bad...Plus the MFY were terrible most of those years!!!

Re: No, Boston still is better than New York
It's crazy. I don't think much of your blog compared to Lookout Landing, Amazin' Avenue, etc.

But really, the Pats shit is kind of ridiculous. You're a Red Sox blog. Some of us are just Red Sox fans. Isn't there a Pats blog too on Sports Nation?

Maybe it's just me, but this is supposed to be a Red Sox blog. Not a Pats blog. I know a lot of it is cross-pollination :) But I get enough Pats crap shoved down my throat already than to see it all over this blog too. :)

Re: No, Boston still is better than New York
OTM is probably one of the best blogs out there. A Red Sox blog, yes but also in a way a blog for Boston sports which the Pats are included. This is truly the pinnacle of New England sports and deserves acknowledgment from a New England sports blog.

But I 110% understand your point since I am actually a Diehard Sox fan and also a Giants fan (cant stand football though)   but you have to admit this is pretty amazing whats going on in NE sports this year.

Re: No, Boston still is better than New York
There is an SBN Pats blog: www.patspulpit.com

I posted about the Pats and their 16-0 season because it's big news. It's not Red Sox related, but I thought it was worth a post for congratulations. I posted this article because it has to do with the Red Sox as well as the Patriots. And, since I am a Pats fan as well as a Sox fan, I feel like I can make a comment when a comment is necessarily (like the one you replied to).

Yes, this is a Red Sox blog, but it doesn't have to be 100 percent Red Sox all the time. Some SBN blogs even do movie reviews. And if you're sick of all the Pats stuff, you should look back about a year -- that was the last time I posted anything Patriots related.

If you don't like the Pats stuff, don't read it. If you want the Red Sox stuff, then you're guaranteed a lot of that. It's the off-season and the Pats are the hot-topic, so why not bring it up since probably 80 percent of the OTM audience are Pats fans as well.

Re: No, Boston still is better than New York
I think there is a slight difference between crowing about the other sports superiorities and the Pats season and movie reviews.

But that's just my opinion. Maybe it's just because I get more than enough Pats crap crammed down my throat from the rest of the media, I figured I'd be safe at OTM, as you said you rarely post about them.

To be honest, Boston sports fans are way worse than NY fans over-all even though Red Sox fans are way better than Yankee fans.
